NLP demands Ksh 70M compensation to victims of violence in Mwingi

The National Liberal Party is demanding that the Government pay Ksh 5 million to each of the 14 bereaved families in Mwingi North for what it calls the State’s failure to protect life.

Speaking at Nguni Market in Mwingi Central, NLP Secretary General Omondi K’Oyoo, on behalf of Party Leader Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli, said the families of victims deserve compensation under Article 26 of the Constitution.

NLP insists only President William Ruto can declare Mwingi North a National Security Emergency under Article 58, deploy the Kenya Defence Forces to secure the Tseikuru–Ukasi corridor, and order the arrests of the attackers.

Hon. K’Oyoo told families gathered at Kyuso Level 4 Hospital Mortuary that the party stands with them, and warned that peace without arrests is surrender, and peace without justice is a lie.

Dr. Muli has written officially written to the President as the Commander in Chief demanding the immediate declaration of the situation in Mwingi a National emergency.

  • 6.2 million jobs created so far, CS Mutua says

6.2 million jobs created so far, CS Mutua says

The Ministry of Labour has outlined its achievements, especially in job creation, as Kenyans marked the 61st Labour Day celebrations in Vihiga County.

Addressing the country, Labour Cabinet Secretary Dr Alfred Mutua said that 6.2 million jobs have so far been created by the government, with significant progress in the labour sector.

CS Mutua cited the creation of millions of jobs across key industries, with a majority of those employed in the public service.

According to Mutua, 1.89 million people have been employed in the public service, including over 128,000 teachers,  60,000 people in county governments, and 640,442 people in housing.

Other opportunities created by the Kenya Kwanza administration include 316,806 in the digital economy and 583,868 for Kazi Majuu.

He further noted that other opportunities were created in SMEs, the hotel sector, the Nyota programme, manufacturing, transport and communication.

“If we add all the jobs created in various sectors, we are talking about over 6.2 million jobs created by the government. Kweli mbele iko sawa,” said CS Mutua.

Other milestones he mentioned include the quick payment of pensions to retirees. The Labour Cabinet Secretary announced that the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) will start processing claims within 24 hours starting next year.

“From the day you retire, if you put your papers in within 7 days, you will get your first payment. We are moving so that next year it will be within 24 hours that you get your pension,” said CS Mutua.

  • Atwoli urges companies outsourcing labour to remit deductions

Atwoli urges companies outsourcing labour to remit deductions

Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has urged government agencies outsourcing labour to remit statutory deductions.

Speaking in Vihiga during the 61st Labour Day celebrations, Atwoli called on the relevant Ministry to develop policies to protect the workers.

“Your Excellency, we implore you to ensure that all Government agencies that outsource companies pay statutory deductions. Hawalipi kodi, hawalipi chochote,” he said.

Atwoli cautioned such companies against exploiting Kenyan employees and called on the Ministry of Labour to develop policies on outsourcing as recommended by the International Labour Organisation.

“Outsourcing is not bad. But Kenyan outsourced companies have a feeling that those employees must be exploited. Any outsourced staff in your premises must enjoy terms and conditions of service as per the prevailing Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in that industry,” said the COTU SG.

On early campaigns, the COTU boss noted that Kenyan workers were concerned about the country’s direction as elections drew near.

He called upon the electoral body to put a stop to this menace and asked Kenyans to wait until IEBC released the campaign calendar for next year’s elections.

“We urge the IEBC to put a stop to this menace and ask Kenyans to wait until the IEBC releases the calendar for next year’s elections. We must put a stop to early campaigns and incitement…even if elections are conducted and whoever wins fairly, with this polarisation, it might cause a problem in our country,” he cautioned.

The COTU SG lauded President William Ruto for his boldness in developing life-changing projects that most presidents shied away from.

  • Brazil’s Congress approves plan to drastically cut Bolsonaro’s jail term

Brazil’s Congress approves plan to drastically cut Bolsonaro’s jail term

Brazil’s Congress has overturned a veto of a bill that would dramatically reduce former president Jair Bolsonaro’s prison sentence for plotting a coup after he lost the last election.

Last year Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in jail for his attempt to cling to power after losing the 2022 elections to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Lula had tried to block a subsequent push by the conservative-majority Congress to reduce Bolsonaro’s term to just over two years, but in a tense session on Thursday lawmakers overrode his veto of a law changing how prison sentences are calculated.

The law could still be challenged in the Supreme Court.

Bolsonaro, 71, was in March allowed to temporarily be placed under house arrest due to ill health.

The former army captain, who served one term as president from 2019 to 2022, had known of plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, Supreme Court justices said as he was found guilty in September.

Without the backing of the senior leaders of the country’s armed forces, the conspiracy failed and Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

After Lula’s veto was defeated, several lawmakers loudly chanted freedom and Flavio Bolsonaro – the name of the imprisoned ex-leader’s eldest son who has aspirations for the office once held by his father.

“I thank the deputies and senators for this very special birthday present,” Flavio Bolsonaro, a Brazilian senator, posted on X regarding the veto override that coincided with his 45th birthday.

More than two thirds of Congress voted to pass the legislation which proposes reducing sentences for individuals convicted of coup-related acts.

It’s the second blow to the left-wing government from Brazilian lawmakers this week and for Lula, who is campaigning for a fourth term.

The day before the veto was overturned, the Senate rejected Lula’s candidate for a Supreme Court justice, Jorge Messias.

It was the first time in decades that the president’s picks for a seat on the top court has been rejected, and it marked momentum for the younger Bolsonaro, who is tied with Lula in the polls.

  • Court puts ex-Nairobi Governor Sonko on defence in corruption case

Court puts ex-Nairobi Governor Sonko on defence in corruption case

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and his co-accused Frederick Odhiambo Oyugi and Antony Otieno Ombok have been placed on their defence in a corruption case involving the irregular award of a 2018 County tender.

In a ruling delivered on Thursday at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, Magistrate Isabella Barasa said the prosecution had established a case to answer in four counts against the accused, including conspiracy to commit an economic crime, conflict of interest, and two counts of acquisition of proceeds of crime.

However, the court acquitted the accused of the money laundering charge, citing insufficient evidence.

The case revolves around the award of a Nairobi City County contract for the hire of heavy equipment to Yiro Enterprises associated to Frederick Odhiambo Oyugi.

Investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) established that the former Governor acquired an indirect private stake in the contract linked to the County Government.

Sonko is alleged to have received Ksh 8.4 million through multiple accounts at Equity Bank from businessman Odhiambo, through ROG Security Limited.

The court heard that Sonko, alongside his associate Odhiambo and communications adviser Ombok, conspired between December 27 and 28, 2018 to commit a corruption offence involving suspected proceeds of crime amounting to Ksh 14.1 million.

The prosecution called 10 witnesses to support its case.

Hon. Isabella ruled that the evidence presented met the legal threshold required to put the accused on their defence, paving the way for the next phase of the trial.

The matter will be mentioned on June 4, 2026, for directions ahead of the defence hearing.

  • Wajir set to host historic Madaraka Day as preparations near completion

Wajir set to host historic Madaraka Day as preparations near completion

The Government has expressed confidence in the level of preparedness for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations to be held in Wajir County, citing steady progress in key infrastructure and logistical arrangements.

Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing projects in Wajir, the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, said preparations were on course and progressing well.

Dr. Omollo, who was accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru, and officials from various Ministries, Departments and Agencies, commended the coordinated efforts between the National and County Governments.

The delegation was received by Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, his Deputy Ahmed Abdi, and county leadership, who have been working jointly with the National Government in organizing the national event.

The PS noted that the designation of Wajir as the host of this year’s Madaraka Day marks the first time the celebrations will be held in Northern Kenya.

An inspection of key sites indicated that construction of the main stadium is between 65 to 70pc complete, with works expected to be finalized ahead of schedule.

Road upgrades within Wajir town and along major access routes are ongoing, while refurbishment of the County Commissioner’s residence, which will host the official State luncheon, is also in progress.

Water supply improvements, including borehole drilling and distribution systems, are being implemented through collaboration between the State Department for Water and the County Government. Installation of generators has also enhanced electricity supply stability in the area.

Dr. Omollo said all critical components were being closely coordinated to ensure smooth delivery of the national celebrations.

“We are encouraged by the progress made so far and the strong collaboration between the National Government and the County Government. From the stadium to roads, water, and power, all key infrastructure is on course, and we are confident that Wajir will be ready ahead of time to host a successful Madaraka Day celebration,” he said.

He said the Government is committed to ensuring the celebrations reflect national unity and inclusivity.

“This will be a historic moment for the people of Wajir and the entire Northern Kenya region. As a government, we are taking national celebrations to all parts of the country so that every region is part of the national development agenda,” he added.

The PS announced that exhibitions and public engagement activities will be held ahead of the celebrations on June 1st, in line with this year’s theme, “Education, Skills, and the Future.”

He assured Kenyans that the Government is satisfied with the progress made and that all necessary measures are in place to ensure a successful event.

  • President Ruto gifts Sawe Ksh 8M after breaking world record in London

President Ruto gifts Sawe Ksh 8M after breaking world record in London

President William Ruto hosted the world marathon record champion Sebastian Sawe at State House, Nairobi, on Thursday to celebrate his historic sub-two hour marathon achievement.

During the ceremony, the President awarded Sawe Ksh 8 million, Ksh 5 million for breaking the world record and Ksh 3 million for winning a gold medal.

He also gifted Sawe a custom-made car number plate, 01:59:30, the historic sub-two hour marathon he registered at the London Marathon on Sunday.

President Ruto commended Sawe for the remarkable achievement of being the first human to run the marathon in under two hours, noting that such moments are rare.

He said that Sawe had done what many believed could not be done, had made the impossible possible, and, in doing so, had inspired Kenya and the world.

“Moments such as these are exceedingly rare. They come, perhaps, once in a generation; sometimes only once in a lifetime,” he said.

The President pointed out that future generations would look back on 26 April, 2026, the day Mr Sawe broke through a physical and psychological barrier long thought insurmountable, saying his name would forever be attached to that moment.

He drew comparisons with great milestones of human history, including the day Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon on 20 July, 1969, and Roger Bannister shattered the four-minute mile on 6 May, 1954, an accomplishment once believed to be beyond human limit.

He explained that these moments did more than set records; indeed, they redefined possibility itself.

“They stretch the boundaries of belief, challenge doubt, inspire courage, and compel humanity to aim higher,” he said.

President Ruto commended Sawe for his consistency and record of successive victories over the years leading to the historic sub two-hour marathon.

The President lauded the country’s athletes for being Kenya’s excellent ambassadors, showcasing the very best of the nation to the world.

“No amount of investment could secure the global recognition and positive image they so powerfully and consistently bring to Kenya,” he said.

To sustain the momentum, he said the government is strengthening sports across the country, scaling up investment in talent development and world-class sporting infrastructure.

He noted that the Government is building Talanta Stadium, a 60,000-seater facility that will host major events, including AFCON 2027.

He also pointed out that the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium have been renovated while 25 other stadia across the country are being expanded to meet international standards.

At the grassroots, he said, the government is establishing Constituency Sports Academies to identify and nurture talent early.

These academies, President Ruto explained, will give young people access to quality training, modern facilities, and clear pathways into professional sport.

To strengthen governance, the President said the government has introduced the Sports Bill 2026, which proposes the establishment of a National Sports Regulatory Authority to ensure the highest standards.

Moreover, he said, the government has enhanced the reward framework for athletes. Gold medal winners in athletics now receive Ksh3 million, silver medallists Ksh 2 million, and bronze winners Ksh 1 million.

“These measures are designed to support sports development and ensure that our young men and women have every opportunity to nurture and advance their talents,” he said.

President Ruto pointed out that by investing in sports and the creative economy, the government is creating pathways for young people to turn talent into sustainable livelihoods and meaningful careers.

On his part, Sawe said his victory was for the country and helped raise Kenya’s global profile.

“We will continue working hard to advance our talents and strengthen the reputation of our country,” he said.

He commended the President for reforms in the sports sector, citing the construction of stadia across the country.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the government is keen on nurturing talent as a source of livelihood.

“Under your leadership (President Ruto), we know that each of our talents will be very transformative not only to the individual athletes, but also in positioning our country as a global sporting giant,” he said.

CS Mvurya explained that when Sawe arrived from London on Wednesday night, he was treated to a water salute at the airport, a rare honour given to heroes.

Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei recalled that Sawe was named the best athlete of the year in 2025 outside the track by World Athletics.

He commended the government for supporting the growth of athletics in the country.

  • NBA and MMUST sign training pact

NBA and MMUST sign training pact

The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has today signed a memorandum of agreement on training of students undertaking modern biotechnology related courses.

The deal was inked at MMUST in Kakamega County by NBA acting Chief Executive officer Dr. Ann Karimi and MMUST Vice-Chancellor Prof. Solomon I. Shibairo in the presence of NBA director of legal services Mr. Moses Sande, Mr. Nehemiah Ngetich who is in charge of compliance and enforcement to
Dr. Karimi appreciated the agreement noting that it will go along way strengthening research and regulating of GMOs in the Country.

“We were established to handle GMOs, but we are now getting into other areas of modern biotechnologies,” said Dr. Karimi.

She added that manpower development is one of the mandates of the Authority and that is why we are reaching out to learning institutions in order to empower them.

“There so much we are doing together, and we look forward for more engagement with higher learning institutions,” explained the acting chief executive officer.

The Authority’s resources are available to benefit Kenyans, and we are working across the board to ensure the issue of misinformation and disinformation that do not hinder the rollout of GMOs in the country.

NBA acting Director Biosafety Assessment and Awareness Mr. Josphat Muchiri disclosed that its only Bt Cotton that has been commercialised in the Country. Bt maize and GM cassava have been approved by the Authority but now awaits Court ruling which has halted its commercialization since last year.

Prof. Shibairo also appreciated the agreement saying it will go along way in supporting students at the institution.

The VC assured Kenyans that GM products are safe as they undergo vigorous testing before release to the market. The University will be leading in training of more manpower and research and help the country to be leader in issues of biosafety.

The programme in which the two institutions agree to collaborate will in particular involve active participation of staff and students of the two institutions in fulfilment of their mandates in the following areas: training and capacity building ,supervision of students and trainees, field/industrial attachment, short-term training, availing internal/external examiners and part-time lecturers, capacity building programs on biosafety and modern biotechnologies, development of training modules on biosafety and biosafety regulatory compliance.

In the area of research and publication; the focus will be on research projects for technology generation, demonstration and transfer, Joint publication, Information sharing through libraries, journals and electronic databases, Sharing of research and training facilities and curriculum development and review on biosafety, biotechnology and emerging technologies.

The deal will benefit among other students undertaking Bachelor of Science programmes in Biosafety and Biosecurity which is designed to meet the growing demand for qualified biosafety and biosecurity professionals to support national and global health preparedness and response.

The institution joins a list of various partners among them Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), International Livestock
Research Institute (ILRI), Kenyatta University and International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) that the Authority is working with as the regulator of Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the Country.
Under the Biosafety Act, Cap 320, the Authority is mandated to exercise general supervision and control over the transfer, handling and use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) with a view to ensuring safety of human and animal health and provision of adequate protection of the environment.

The study on national requirements for manpower development and capacity building in biosafety in Kenya, 2025, Commissioned by National Biosafety Authority and conducted by Prof. George O. Obiero of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Nairobi, in 2025 proposed a review of the curriculum to include biosafety in modern biotechnology training which is crucial for ensuring safe and responsible development and application of biotechnology advancements.

The report noted that majority of the institutions of higher learning institutions were training scientists in modern biotechnology without integration of modern biosafety matters.

“A comprehensive biosafety course dedicated specifically to biosafety is only offered at BSc level at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST). Therefore, there is need for other higher education institutions and tertiary institutions (TVETs) to develop and integrate biosafety course at BSc, MSc and PhD levels,” read the report .

Universities that training students in the sector are; Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), University of Eldoret,Moi University, Kisii University, Technical University of Kenya, Kenyatta University, University of Nairobi and Maseno University among others.

Kenya signed Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2000 and ratified it in 2003 with National Biosafety Authority as the national focus point.

This is an international agreement which aims to ensure the regulation of GMOs to ensure their safety to humans, animals and environment.

The protocol is part of the global convention on biological diversity (CBD) and provides a framework for the utilization of biotechnology while also recognizing the potential risks that may be posed by the new technologies.

The study aimed to provide a quantitative picture of biotechnology activities in the country (according to international standards), to identify needs and constraints and to fulfill the national and international obligations of the National biosafety Authority (NBA).

  • NLP demands declaration of Mwingi insecurity a national emergency

NLP demands declaration of Mwingi insecurity a national emergency

The National Liberal Party (NLP) has demanded for the declaration of the escalating violence in Mwingi and along the Mwingi–Garissa Highway a national emergency, warning that Kenya risks sliding into inter‑community war if urgent action is not taken.

The party’s leader, Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli, sounded the alarm after fresh attacks at Ukasi allegedly left a child dead and passenger buses under siege.

Video footage circulating online showed windscreens smashed and terrified drivers fleeing as residents blocked the road with burning tyres. Hundreds of travelers were stranded following the incident.

This latest assault comes in the wake of a string of killings in Tseikuru’s Kwa Kamari village, where seven people were gunned down and hacked to death by bandits traveling in Probox vehicles. Shops and a petrol station were torched, forcing villagers to hide in bushland.

“This is a cycle of ethnic retaliation that threatens to become inter‑community war,” Dr. Muli said. He demanded that Inspector General Douglas Kanja and Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat camp in Mwingi until all perpetrators are arrested. “Calling for calm while killers roam free is surrender,” he added.

The NLP is calling for immediate deployment of National Police Reservists, GSU, and even the military if necessary, to secure the corridor and provide armed escorts for passenger buses. The party insists the highway is an economic lifeline to northern Kenya, and its closure is strangling Ukambani.

The statement also urged the arrest of inciters, noting that the DCI has already detained a Garissa aspirant whose video allegedly fueled revenge attacks. “Ethnic mobilization is terrorism,” the party declared.

To defuse tensions, NLP is pushing for a ceasefire summit within 48 hours, bringing together elders, clergy, and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission under heavy security in Mwingi. “No community wins a blood feud,” the statement read.

Dr. Muli appealed directly to residents: “Stoning a bus with children because of a pasture dispute is evil. Burning shops because a herder was killed is evil. You are not defending your people — you are destroying them.”

He linked the violence to decades of neglect, citing the post independence sessional paper that declared 23 counties “low‑potential” and starved them of roads, water, and schools. “That is why youth throw stones instead of textbooks. That is why bandits find recruits,” Muli said, pointing to the NLP’s manifesto projects — Thwake Dam, Kitui Textiles, and TVET‑to‑factory programs — as the only path to lasting peace.

In a direct appeal to President William Ruto, Muli demanded equal urgency: “Treat Kwa Kamari like you would Westlands. Send the same resources. Demand the same urgency.” He also posed two blunt questions: “Where is the Government? And where is United Opposition when our people are in need?”

He concluded: “Seven dead in one village. A child killed on a bus. A highway closed. This is a national emergency.”

  • Comey charged with threatening Trump’s life in Instagram post

Comey charged with threatening Trump’s life in Instagram post

Former FBI Director James Comey has been charged with threatening the life of US President Donald Trump, a formal accusation that stems from an image he briefly shared on social media.

The image posted on Instagram last year showed seashells forming the numbers “86 47”. “Eighty-six” is a slang term used to mean “eject” or “remove”.

Comey has insisted he did not know what the numbers on the image meant, but Trump and other administration officials have said the post was a threat against the 47th president.

Responding to the charges on Tuesday, Comey said: “I’m still innocent, I’m still not afraid, and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary.”

At a press conference to announce the indictment, FBI Director Kash Patel said that as the former director of the agency, Comey “knew full well the attention and consequences of making such a post”.

“James Comey disgracefully encouraged a threat on President Trump’s life and posted it on Instagram for the world to see,” Kash Patel said on Tuesday.

Comey was fired by Trump during his first term, after the former FBI director opened an investigation into Russian interference in the US 2016 presidential election.

Since then, Trump has repeatedly called for his prosecution – Tuesday’s charges are the administration’s second attempt to do so.

“Well, they’re back. This time about a picture of sea shells on a North Carolina beach a year ago. And this won’t be the end of it, but nothing has changed with me,” Comey said in a statement.

Comey faces charges of making a threat against the president and transmitting a threat in interstate commerce, according to court documents. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

The criminal charges were filed in the Eastern District of North Carolina, the same region where the shells were reportedly found.

“Threatening the life of the President of the United States is a grave violation of our nation’s laws,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement. “The grand jury returned an indictment alleging James Comey did just that.”

US Secret Service agents interviewed Comey last May about the seashell photo.

Comey deleted the Instagram post, saying in a follow-up that he “assumed [the sea shells] were a political message”.

“I didn’t realise some folks associate those numbers with violence,” he added. “It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”

Trump, who has long criticised Comey, said of the post that “a child knows what that meant”.

Some legal experts said the indictment appeared insubstantial and raised new questions about the DOJ’s efforts to target Trump’s perceived political opponents.

“It’s very thin,” said Michael Gerhardt, a constitutional law expert at the UNC School of Law.

Comey’s social media post will likely be viewed by courts as free speech that is protected by the first amendment, Gerhardt added.

Jimmy Gurulé, a former federal prosecutor and former assistant US Attorney General appointed by President George W Bush, said the new indictment was “an embarrassment to the American criminal justice system”.

“The DOJ will not be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that James Comey had the intent to threaten or harm President Trump,” Gurulé, now a Notre Dame Law School professor, said in a statement to the BBC. “The indictment is a transparent attempt to intimidate one of the President’s perceived political enemies.”

This is the second time the justice department has brought charges against Comey.

Comey was indicted by a federal grand jury in late September on charges that he lied to Congress during testimony in September 2020 and obstructed a congressional proceeding.

The charges came days after Trump called on the country’s top law enforcement official to more aggressively investigate his political adversaries, including Comey.

Comey pleaded not guilty during a brief court appearance in October before the case was dismissed in November.

US District Judge Cameron Currie tossed the indictment against Comey because of prosecutor Lindsey Halligan’s “invalid” appointment as US attorney.

Halligan, the prosecutor in eastern Virginia who secured the indictments, was not authorised to present the charges to the grand jury, the judge said. Halligan is a former White House aide who had never prosecuted a case before.

The judge, however, left the door open for the government to try again.

Earlier on Tuesday, a separate judge ruled that former federal prosecutor Maurene Comey – James Comey’s daughter – can move forward with her case challenging her firing by the Trump administration.
