Kindiki: Government committed to lower fuel prices through dialogue

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has expressed government’s commitment to lower fuel prices calling on all stakeholders in the sector to observe peace for quicker resolution to the impasse.

Further, the DP thanked operators of public service vehicles for calling off their strike to allow for talks saying they have shown their patriotism and readiness to engage for the good of the country.

“The government is committed to engage the stakeholders and come up with a solution so that our country and the economy continue flourishing. We will get a solution to the fuel issue. There is no problem that is so big that we cannot handle,” DP assured.

Speaking on Tuesday during the funeral service of Mzee Eshbon Thuku Kwenya, the father of Kinangop MP Kwenya Thuku that was held at Rugongo in the Constituency, Prof. Kindiki said the administration has taken action to cushion Kenyans from higher prices and is working on more measures to bring it down.

The Second in Command revealed quick steps already taken including reducing Value Added Tax on fuel from 16 percent to 8 percent and releasing over 12 billion shillings to subsidize price and the latest cut on diesel prices by 10 shillings.

“We have reduced diesel prices by 10 shillings and we are holding further talks on what more we can do. We appreciate the stakeholders for calling off the strike and coming to the table for talks. As the government we thank them for being patriotic and allowing room for engagement as we look for an agreeable solution,” he stated.

The Deputy President assured the country that the government is fully seized of the matter calling for peace and maintenance of law and order warning that violence will not solve it.

“I urge all of us to keep peace. Let us not use the opportunity to break the law, loot, torch vehicles and disrupt transportation. Violence will not bring any solution. A solution can only be achieved through engagement the way we have done,” he noted.

Additionally, the DP said the government is balancing necessary interventions with the need to ensure a stable economy and continuity in other critical sectors such as education and roads.

Prof. Kindiki also beseeched Mt. Kenya residents to be peaceful and not attack each other because of political affiliations.

“We have been actively involved in the politics of Kenya for a long time. We fought for our independence, we were at the forefront to fight for multi-partyism. We did all these without destroying our properties and killing ourselves. Politics will come and go,” he urged.

  • Ruto calls for global financial reform to boost affordable housing in Africa

Ruto calls for global financial reform to boost affordable housing in Africa

President William Ruto has called for stronger African multilateral financing and reform of the global financial architecture to tackle the housing crisis as a result of rapid urbanisation.

The President said the provision of adequate and affordable housing and sustainable urban development in developing countries, especially in Africa, continues to be undermined by an unfair international financial architecture.

He pointed out that affordable housing in Africa is both urgent and essential because the continent will be home to 25 per cent of the world’s population by 2050, with 70 per cent living in urban areas.

There is, therefore, urgent need to reform the international financial architecture so that it aligns with the realities, needs, and development aspirations of the modern world.

He explained that despite Africa’s vast resources and economic potential, the continent still faces limited access to affordable concessional financing, with many countries paying up to five times more for credit than developed nations.

“The paradox is that the countries that need concessional funding the most pay more than the countries that don’t need it when they go to the market. That has to be corrected,” he said.

The President spoke during the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum held in Baku, Azerbaijan, bringing together 45,000 participants from 182 countries.

Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Aleksandar Vučić (Serbia) and Dharambeer Gokhool (Mauritius), and Prime Ministers Olzhas Bektenov (Kazakhstan) and Irakli Kobakhidze (Georgia) were present.

Also at the meeting were King Mswati III of Eswatini, and UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach, among other leaders.

At the forum, the President said Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme continues to gain global recognition as one of Africa’s leading models for sustainable urban development, inclusive growth, and social transformation.

President Ruto noted that today, nearly three billion people across the world are affected by inadequate housing, Mlmore than one billion live in slums and informal settlements, while over 300 million are homeless.

He said Kenya is taking proactive measures to ensure Kenyans have adequate affordable housing units.

He said Kenya has 1,100 informal settlements, with seven million residents, a situation that led the government to make the bold decision to make the affordable housing a central pillar of national transformation.

To ensure the success of the programme, he said, the government addressed the challenge of land by making public land available for the project free of charge, automatically reducing the cost of housing by 30 per cent.

Additionally, the President said the government negotiated with relevant professionals and reduced professional fees from 10 per cent to 2.5 per cent of the total cost.

In turn, the government offered building and construction professionals incentives to build more than 3,000 houses a year, up from 10 or 20 annually, as well as standardising construction materials to enable mass production.

To address the funding challenge, he explained, Kenya established the Affordable Housing Fund using locally mobilised resources to create a stable financing mechanism for housing development.

President Ruto announced that the fund has signed housing projects worth $5 billion (KSh650 billion) in completed and ongoing projects in the past 35 months.

This has led to growth of many enterprises and boosted manufacturing across the country.

“In the past three years, we have built 273,000 housing units, 8,000 house keys handed over, while 55,000 keys will be handed over by the end of this year. In the pipeline, we have 700,000 housing units,” he said.

The President also disclosed that the programme has employed 640,000 young people and is on course to increase the number to one million workers by 2027.

Additionally, he said the programme is eradicating slums and will eventually curb land fragmentation, ensuring adequate agricultural land for farming.

Thanks to the affordable projects, President Ruto said, Kenya has the largest housing programme in Africa.

The President also called for reform of the United Nations Security Council, saying it was unfair that 1.5 billion people across 54 African countries do not have representation.

He said the bigger paradox is that 60 per cent of the agenda of the Security Council concerns African issues, yet these are discussed without African representation.

“For the survival of the UN, there must be reform that corrects this anomaly so that the UN becomes representative, democratic and brings on board the view of Africa,” he said.

On his part, President Aliyev called on world leaders to be brave and cautious, urging a delicate balance in urban planning and development and protecting cities’ architectural heritage.

“And today, by organising this global gathering, we once again demonstrate our strong commitment to urban planning and urban development,” he said.

Rossbach announced that the forum’s discussions will culminate in the adoption of the Baku Call to Action, which will establish a shared global vision for inclusive and sustainable cities.

  • Kindiki: Economic sabotage, looting, violent protests cannot resolve fuel prices challenge

Kindiki: Economic sabotage, looting, violent protests cannot resolve fuel prices challenge

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has urged Kenyans to remain patient and avoid acts of violence as the government works with stakeholders to address the rising cost of fuel occasioned by the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

Already, President William Ruto who is in Azerbaijan has directed the Deputy President, Cabinet Secretaries John Mbadi, Davis Chirchir, Opiyo Wandayi and Kipchumba Murkomen to convene a meeting with stakeholders, including the owners and operators of public transport vehicles, manufacturers and other players who rely on petroleum products, and seek solutions to the fuel prices issue.

The DP was speaking during a consultative forum with grassroots leaders from Tharaka Constituency at his Irunduni rural home in Tharaka-Nithi County on Monday.

Prof Kindiki said the fuel crisis was a global challenge affecting economies across the world and should not be politicised.

“Through deliberate and innovative strategies, the Government, through the leadership of President William Ruto had lowered the cost of fuel from Ksh218 per litre to Ksh171 per litre before the war situation erupted in Iran a few weeks ago,” the Deputy President said.

“I want to challenge the critics of this government to look Kenyans in the eye and show us which country in the world has not had fuel prices increasing. This is a global challenge. It is not a Kenyan issue. We must all be truthful,” he added.

Prof Kindiki defended the government’s response to the fuel crisis, saying several interventions had already been undertaken to cushion wananchi from the effects of rising global oil prices.

“We are doing everything possible to cushion Kenyans from the effects of high fuel costs and will continue to do more,” he said.

According to the Deputy President, government measures had prevented fuel prices from soaring to unprecedented levels.

“If the government had not made the interventions, the price of fuel per litre would have shot to between Ksh300 and Ksh400. So far, we have reduced VAT on petroleum products from 16 per cent to 8 per cent. We have also injected a lot of money into the stabilisation fund,” he said.

While acknowledging that Kenyans have a constitutional right to air their concerns over the cost of petroleum products, Prof Kindiki warned against destruction of property and economic sabotage.

“It is unpatriotic for anyone, in pursuit of political capital, to incite Kenyans to engage in acts of economic sabotage in the guise of pushing for lower fuel prices,” he said.

“Demonstrations, violent protests, looting and anarchy cannot resolve the fuel cost challenge.”

He added that the country could not afford instability at a time of economic strain.

“We cannot allow criminals to take our country hostage and sabotage the economy through violent protests, anarchy and looting. Our country is superior to all other interests,” he said.

The Deputy President also announced that the National Infrastructure Fund currently holds Sh350 billion, which will finance water, energy and infrastructure projects, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions such as Tharaka beginning next year.

  • Waiguru intensifies Ruto’s 2027 re-election campaign

    Waiguru intensifies Ruto’s 2027 re-election campaign

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has intensified campaign for the re-election of President William Ruto with a call for Kenyans to give United Democratic Alliance (UDA) a first round win for the Presidency.

Waiguru said the opposition will be no match to President Ruto come 2027 elections adding that the ‘Two Term’ campaigns are gaining momentum because of the overwhelming support from Kenyans.

The second term Governor who took the Ruto re-election campaign to Kwale, Coast region, said Ruto has a solid support across all the region.

“This is only the beginning. We are going round the country to ensure President Ruto wins in the first round because the opposition has no plan for Kenyans apart from politics,” she added.

Waiguru asked Kenyans to reject divisive and tribal politics allegedly being advanced by the opposition.

Speaking during a women empowerment programme in Mavumbo Ward, Kwale County, Waiguru reaffirmed her loyalty to the ruling UDA party and dismissed speculation suggesting she was planning to exit.

“I remain firmly in UDA and firmly in government. We are focused on supporting President Ruto because he is developing Kenya equally without discrimination,” she said.

Waiguru also clarified recent media reports linking her to an apology directed at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following his impeachment, saying it was being twisted by the opposition for their own political gain.

“I never apologised to any individual. I only said that if there are people who felt wronged by the government, then we regret that feeling. That should not be twisted into politics,” Waiguru stated.

Waiguru said President Ruto had demonstrated commitment to equitable development across the country and urged Kenyans to remain patient as the government implements its development agenda.

“The President has a plan for this country and we can already see development reaching every part of Kenya at a good pace. Progress takes time and wananchi should give him the opportunity to fully implement his agenda,” Waiguru said.

The Kirinyaga governor also drummed up support for Governor Fatuma Achani, praising her leadership and development record in Kwale County.

“I have been to Kwale before and witnessed the transformation Governor Achani has achieved, from the oncology centre to her outstanding investment in ECDE. She has proven that women are capable leaders and she deserves a second term,” Waiguru said.

Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani, in her remarks, noted that Waiguru was now ready for a bigger national leadership role after serving in various senior government positions.

“She has served as Cabinet Secretary, Governor and became the first female Chairperson of the Council of Governors.

She has distinguished herself nationally and deserves an even greater leadership role in future,” Achani added.

Governor Abdulswamad Nassir (Mombasa) also rallied support for President Ruto and Governor Achani, saying the cooperation between ODM and UDA leaders had accelerated development and legislative processes that directly benefit ordinary Kenyans.

“President Ruto has supported development at the Coast in a big way and the cooperation between ODM and UDA has helped leaders pass laws that ease the burden on wananchi, including measures touching on fuel prices.

Those in opposition want the country to fail so that they can gain political mileage,” Abdulswamad said.

Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho reiterated support for President Ruto while maintaining that ODM leaders remained committed to working together for the country’s development.

“We are supporting President Ruto because leadership is about working together for Kenyans. Since appointing me as Cabinet Secretary, the President has shown commitment to ensuring mining becomes a major source of income for residents at the Coast,” Joho said.

Joho further noted that the Coast region equally had capable leaders who could pursue national leadership in future.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot urged Kwale residents to continue supporting the government, saying the Kenya Kwanza administration was committed to equitable development across all regions.

“We want every part of Kenya to benefit equally from development regardless of how they voted. Some people in the opposition wanted government projects treated like shares in a company reserved for certain regions only, but we believe in equitable development for all Kenyans,” Cheruiyot said.

The event brought together national and county leaders from across the country, with speakers using the platform to rally support for President Ruto’s re-election bid while calling for unity and continued support for women leadership.

IEBC, Interior Ministry boost election readiness

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, development partners, and all relevant stakeholders to ensure peaceful, transparent, credible, and inclusive elections.

Speaking during a consultative meeting held in Nairobi on Friday with the Interior Ministry, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon emphasized that the success of the 2027 General Election will largely depend on how effectively institutions coordinate and collaborate ahead of the elections.

“Today’s engagement is both timely and necessary. Elections are not the responsibility of a single institution. Successful elections require strong coordination, continuous consultation, and mutual support among institutions charged with safeguarding democracy, peace, security, and the rule of law,” he said.

The Chairperson thanked the Interior Ministry for its support during the recently concluded Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration drive, as well as the by-elections conducted peacefully on Thursday, May 14.

While addressing the meeting, the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, assured the Commission of the Ministry’s commitment to continuous collaboration and consultation to ensure that the 2027 General Election (#2027GE) is credible, peaceful, and reflective of the fundamental principles of good governance.

The engagement held Friday focused on strengthening collaboration, particularly in the area of issuance of national identification cards, election security preparedness and conflict management and peacebuilding.
