Mudavadi accuses Raila of pursuing selfish political interests

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has lashed out at Azimio leader Raila Odinga accusing him of using his community as a shield to pursue selfish interests.

Mudavadi said it was selfish and greedy of the Opposition leader to use poor members of his community to advance selfish interests.

He was speaking Sunday during an inter-denominational prayer and thanksgiving service at Mwatunge Primary School in Mwatate, Taita Taveta County.

The ODM leader has in the recent past called for public protests to decry the high cost of living and push for the repealing of the Finance Act 2023.

The protests have so far left several people dead and scores injured with another round of protests slated for this Wednesday.

Mudavadi spoke at a time former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has accused Raila of dishonesty in regards to his high cost of living review quest saying the ODM chief is using it as a scapegoat to achieve selfish political interests.

According to Muthama who is also a Commissioner of the Parliamentary Service Commission, PSC, even if prices of commodities come down, the former premier will shift to raising issues like legitimacy of President William Ruto.

“Mr Odinga’s political path is always characterized by changing goal posts of which even if prices of commodities come down today, he will start delegitimizing the Kenya Kwanza administration. Let him not use high cost of living as a scapegoat for his political interests while destroying people’s property,” Muthama said in a statement.

“It is only fair for Raila-led group to give the Head of State time to deliver to Kenyans instead of arm-twisting and intimidating to him to arrest the high cost of living which is as a result of their mess.”

Kenya, Indonesia in race to bolster bilateral ties

Indonesia, the world’s largest producer of palm oil, terms Kenya’s enormous potential  as key in bolstering ties between the two countries and has undertaken to assist Nairobi attain self-sufficiency in edible oils through large scale farming of palm oil, sunflower oil and soya beans.

“We believe that the many potentials, both in G-to-G and B-to-B, are significant in strengthening relations between our two countries,” remarked Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan during his recent visit to the country.

During the visit, Minister Luhut led a delegation of high-ranking officials from Ministries and Institutions and state-owned and private companies in meeting President William Ruto at the State House, Nairobi.

The visit, which was arranged in a two-day business forum, served as preparation for President Joko Widodo’s visit to Kenya in August, agreed on several matters within the G-to-G and B-2-B frameworks.

It resulted in some deliverables, including Pertamina’s investment plans in the upstream oil and gas industry and the geothermal sector, plans for cooperation between Bio Farma and Kenyan SOE on vaccines, plans for the distribution cooperation of Combiphar with Kenyan local partners, plans for livestock imports, plans for investment by Indonesian textile companies in Kenya, and plans for cooperation in the oil palm sector.

Coordinating Minister Luhut explained that Kenya has a very strategic location as a vital commodity hub with high economic value to a broader market with more than 300 million people in countries around Kenya, such as Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, DRC, and many more.

Regarding G-to-G, the governments of Kenya and Indonesia also agreed on a Letter of Intent for cooperation in livestock and animal health.

The visit also encouraged the completion of a bilateral defense cooperation document and to start Preferential Trade Agreement negotiations to promote trade relations between the two countries.

In addition to meeting with President Ruto, Coordinating Minister Luhut also held meetings with Kenyan ministerial-level officials, namely the Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade and Industry, the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, the Cabinet Secretary for Defense, and several other high-ranking officials.

This visit also symbolizes the spirit of Bandung in 1955, which led to the decolonization of Kenya and is historical evidence of the struggle for independence together.

Plans for President Ruto’s Nyanza visit at an advanced stage

Plans for the forthcoming visit by President William Ruto to Nyanza region have fast gathered pace.

Cabinet Secretaries Eliud Owalo of Information, Communications, Technology and Digital Economy and his Roads counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen Friday morning met five lawmakers drawn from the region to jointly plan on how to make the visit a success.

“Key in the discussion was roads and other infrastructure projects in Nyanza region,” remarked CS Owalo after the meeting.

Lawmakers present included Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang’o of Lang’ata, Elisha Odhiambo of Gem and Caroli Omondi of Suba South.

The meeting comes barely days after Jalang’o, Odhiambo and Omondi alongside MPs Mark Nyamita (Uriri), Paul Abuor (Rongo) as well Kisumu Senator Prof. Tom Ojienda on July 4, 2023 met President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi.

During the meeting, President Ruto undertook to work with all leaders to catalyze development countrywide.

“We will work with leaders across the country without reservation or discrimination, regardless of political affiliation, to deliver services to the people. This is what the Constitution demands and what all Kenyans deserve,” President Ruto said at the time.

The Jalang’o faction has broken ranks with the Raila Odinga led ODM Party after it earlier  visited State House allegedly without the party’s blessings.

The lawmakers have been unapologetic in maintaining that they will work with the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration to spur development in their areas of jurisdiction.

Heightened security as Azimio readies for protests

Security has been heightened in the country ahead of planned protests by Azimio.

The Opposition outfit has called for countrywide protests to push for the repealing of the Finance Act 2023.

It argues that if left unchecked, the Act which came into force on July 1, 2023, will make life unbearable for majority of Kenyans.

The High Court has however issued conservatory orders suspending its implementation pending the hearing of a case filed by Busia County Senator Okiya Omtatah.

Early Friday, hawk-eyed police officers dispersed several youths said to be from Mathare who had blocked Thika Road service lane using tyres that they set on fire rendering the road impassable.

The youths were also reportedly stoning motorists.

It is a turn of events that was condemned by the vocal Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei.

“The acts of lawlessness reported along Thika Road is equal to economic sabotage…If need be, the police should cancel the Maandamos & deal ruthlessly with law breakers including arresting organisers!” charged Cherargei.

A number of Azimio supporters are already heading to Kamukunji Grounds where coalition leaders led by Raila Odinga will hold a mega rally.

In Kisumu, most businesses have closed shop ahead of the protests amid fears that their merchandise will be looted.

Tight security has also been witnessed in Mombasa where pockets of area residents and activists are holding Saba Saba protests.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga wants Finance Act, 2023 repealed

Azimio leader Raila Odinga now wants Finance Act, 2023 repealed.

Raila, who jetted back in the country Tuesday, has vowed to use all it takes, including civil disobedience and street protests, to have the act repealed.

“There is no option left, we must fight, we are going to fight, everywhere and anywhere until the Finance Act is repealed,” he said while addressing supporters at Kamukunji grounds.

He castigated the executive and the legislature for betraying Kenyans at the hour of need in a move he lamented was bound to worsen the already high cost of living being witnessed in the country.

“The betrayal in the city has sipped into every village in Kenya. It has united Kenyans better that any government would. While the betrayal has shuttered our faith in government and parliament, it has strengthened our faith in ourselves and in our power.”

He spoke a day after President William Ruto assented to the Finance Bill, 2023 at State House, Nairobi.

Azimio has in particular taken issue with the decision by the Kenya Kwanza regime to increase the Value Added Tax on fuel from 8% to 16% arguing that the decision will make life unbearable for majority of Kenyans.

The housing tax of 1.5 percent to be paid by both the employee and employer has also been an eyesore to the Opposition.

  • CS Kindiki reads riot act to rogue preachers

CS Kindiki reads riot act to rogue preachers

The government will not relent in its quest to wipe out rogue preachers who use Holy Scriptures to prey on innocent Kenyans.

Interior CS Prof. Kithure Kindiki says while the government respects freedom of worship and acknowledges the role played by a majority of religious leaders and organisations in spiritually nourishing their followers whilst contributing to development programs in various sectors such as education and health, there was need to hold wayward religious leaders to account.

“The process of making religious organisations accountable will continue until all rogue preachers and criminals who use Holy scriptures to mislead their followers are conclusively dealt with,” Prof. Kindiki vowed.

He spoke when he joined Christians at the PEFA Church Kamahuha, Maragua Constituency, Murang’a County for Sunday worship and thanksgiving.

He noted that religious extremism ranks in the list of national security threats.

The CS spoke at a time the government has already formed a 14-member taskforce to look into the country’s religions’ regulatory framework.

This followed the death of at least 200 people believed to be members of the Paul Mackenzie led Good News International Church in Kilifi’s Shakahola forest.

The taskforce led by former Mbeere South MP Mutava Musyimi has been tasked with identifying gaps in the legal, institutional and governance systems that have over the years allowed cults and extremist groups to operate and recommend the best way of remedying the anomaly.

Meanwhile Prof. Kindiki has termed the manufacture, trade, use, and abuse of illicit alcohol and narcotic drugs in Central Kenya and other parts of the country a serious security threat.

“We risk losing an entire generation. The Government will not backtrack in this fight and will deploy equal, if not more ruthlessness and viciousness as it has in combating terrorism and banditry,” the CS said.

  • President Ruto: Community Health Promoters key in decongesting health facilities

President Ruto: Community Health Promoters key in decongesting health facilities

The national government is determined to adequately equip Community Health Promoters (CHPs) that will be charged with the responsibility of managing minor health issues at the village level.

President William Ruto says his administration will spend at least Ksh. 3.5 billion to provide the CHPs with the requisite medical equipment to facilitate their work countrywide.

Ksh. 260 million will be provided annually by the national government and county governments to cater for their pay.

Under the arrangement, half of the amount will be provided by the national government while county governments will contribute Ksh. 130 million annually to pay CHPs salaries.

President Ruto says the 100,000 CHPs to be spread across the 47 counties will play a critical role in decongesting health facilities across the country.

“Many of the conditions that end up in hospitals are minor. If they are managed early, we can manage to decongest our hospitals and we can manage our hospitals better if we go the route of promotive, and if we go the route of preventive,” President Ruto said Sunday after attending a service at Christ Church Cathedral in Kakamega.

Equipment worth Ksh. 120 million will be provided to CHPs in Kakamega County alone through the County Government.

As regards the management of hospitals, The Head of State indicated that he has reached an agreement with Governors to establish a Facility Improvement Fund that will ensure there is no diversion of funds meant for hospitals across the country.

He noted that the Government is committed to clearing county governments’ pending bills to ensure devolution is successful.
He, however, explained that he will not borrow from foreign lenders to pay counties.
“I want counties to succeed but on our own resources.”
He urged Kenyans to support the affordable housing plan to reverse the land fragmentation that threatens food security in the country.
The President said the Government has made significant agricultural investments to increase food production and hence reduce the cost of living.
“We must progressively invest in agriculture and support our farmers because the solution to reducing the cost of food is increasing food production,” he said.
Present were Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Governors Ferdinand Barasa (Kakamega), Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi) and a host of MPs led by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale.
President Ruto said he is committed to working with all leaders, regardless of their political affiliation.
“No part of the Republic of Kenya will be left behind,” he added.
Mudavadi asked Kenyans to be patriotic and have a sense of responsibility in the country’s development agenda.
He maintained that it was unreasonable to oppose government programmes because they are not direct beneficiaries.
Barasa said Governors support the Government’s initiative to raise resources from domestic revenue.
“On behalf of the 47 counties, we support your initiative to collect tax because we cannot have development with collecting tax,” he said.
Sakaja asked legislators to enact legislations that are in the best interest of Kenyans, citing the Finance Bill 2023.
“As a leader, never be afraid to be misunderstood if you are doing the right thing; you will be understood later,” he said.
The Nairobi Governor asked Kenyans to have faith in President Ruto, saying he has a good vision for the country.
Lurambi MP Bishop Titus Khamala said the world was facing a global economic crisis that has affected all nations, including Kenya.
He called on Kenyans and their leaders to support the government in implementing programmes to aid the country’s economic recovery.
Ikolomani MP Benard Shinali said they support the president’s transformation agenda for shared prosperity.
