Rwanda extends Premier League presence with record Aston Villa deal

Visit Rwanda has agreed to become Aston Villa’s new front-of-shirt sponsor, in what the club describes as the most lucrative sponsorship deal in its history.

The partnership will see Visit Rwanda branding appear on the front of Aston Villa’s men’s, women’s and academy team shirts starting from the 2026/27 season.

The tourism board will also become the club’s Official Tourism Partner and Official Coffee Provider.

Visit Rwanda replaces Betano, which had been Villa’s front-of-shirt sponsor for the past two seasons.

The change comes as Premier League clubs move to voluntarily phase out betting and gambling brands from the front of their shirts starting in the 2026-27 season.

According to reports from The Athletic, the deal is worth up to £20 million ($26.8 million) annually if performance-related bonus clauses are met, marking a significant increase from what Betano had been paying.

This is not Rwanda’s first venture into Premier League sponsorship.

Visit Rwanda spent close to eight years as sleeve sponsor of Arsenal, a deal reportedly worth around £10 million per season in its final years, before it concluded at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Arsenal have since replaced Visit Rwanda with HR company Deel as their new sleeve sponsor.

Aston Villa’s president of business operations, Francesco Calvo, called the agreement “a very exciting partnership” and a sign of the club’s growing international presence.

Janet Karemera, chief executive of the Rwanda Convention Bureau, said the tourism board is looking to expand its reach to new audiences across the UK and Europe.

The deal arrives as Aston Villa look to grow their commercial revenue following their 2025-26 UEFA Europa League triumph, which secures them a place in next season’s Champions League.

The club’s recent accounts showed sponsorship revenue rising 31 percent to £28.6 million, with total commercial revenue up 69 percent to £70 million.

  • Ruto pledges Ksh35 million, new training ground for AFC Leopards

Ruto pledges Ksh35 million, new training ground for AFC Leopards

President William Ruto has pledged Ksh35 million in support to AFC Leopards during a State House visit, boosting the club both financially and in infrastructure.

The President committed Ksh25 million toward the club’s sponsorship, raising its annual sponsorship income from Ksh75 million to Ksh100 million.

He also pledged Ksh10 million in direct cash support, with Ksh5 million to be shared among the players and the remaining Ksh5 million allocated toward signing new players ahead of the upcoming Football Kenya Federation Premier League season.

“You have also asked for resources to sign new players ahead of the new season. I will do something about that. I will give you Ksh10 million. The players will take Ksh5 million, and the remaining will be used for the new signings,” Ruto said.

Beyond the cash pledges, Ruto committed government support to help AFC Leopards develop the training ground the club has leased for 15 years, which officials said was in poor condition.

The President directed Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya to work with the club to design an upgrade to bring the facility up to standard.

The visit comes as AFC Leopards, along with other top-tier clubs, faces mounting pressure over training infrastructure, with Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums set to close for renovations ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

Club officials have repeatedly flagged the lack of a permanent, well-equipped training base as one of their biggest structural challenges.

The pledges are expected to give AFC Leopards a significant boost as they prepare for the new season, both in strengthening their squad and addressing long-standing facility concerns.

The government has also been investing in stadium infrastructure nationally, with several venues under construction or renovation ahead of the 2027 AFCON tournament.

  • FIFA puts World Cup Final Grass up for sale, at $450 a piece

FIFA puts World Cup Final Grass up for sale, at $450 a piece

FIFA has begun selling pieces of the turf that will be used for the July 19 championship match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with prices starting at $450 per segment.Even the field for the 2026 World Cup final is being turned into a commercial product.

According to FIFA’s online store, each entry-level piece of grass will be preserved inside an acrylic display case alongside a USB keepsake.

Marketed as a collectible way for fans to own a fragment of the championship playing surface. Buyers won’t receive their orders until after the final has been played.

The turf sale comes in several tiers, with higher-priced versions reaching as much as $3,000 and including additional items such as a miniature replica trophy and a golden ticket replica.

FIFA has capped each tier at just over 2,000 units, and shipping is currently limited to addresses in the United States and Europe, excluding fans in some countries whose national teams could still reach the final.

The move adds to mounting criticism of FIFA’s pricing strategy throughout this year’s tournament, with regular final tickets reportedly reaching close to $33,000 and hospitality packages priced even higher.

Industry estimates suggest the turf sales alone could generate more than $11 million for the governing body.

The pitch being sold was reportedly grown at a turf farm in North Carolina and specially installed at MetLife Stadium, which typically uses artificial turf for NFL games.

Players and coaches competing in this year’s tournament have previously raised concerns about the quality of the playing surface at the venue.

As anticipation builds for Sunday’s final, FIFA’s decision to monetize even the ground beneath players’ feet has become one more example of the commercial scale surrounding this year’s World Cup.

  • Khalwale pushes for more Western, Nyanza slots at National School Games

Khalwale pushes for more Western, Nyanza slots at National School Games

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has called on the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) to increase the number of football teams representing the Western and Nyanza regions at the National Secondary Schools Games.

The senator argues that the two regions have consistently produced some of the country’s strongest and most competitive school football sides, yet the current qualification structure allows only one boys’ team and one girls’ team from each region to advance to the national championships.

According to Khalwale, this arrangement fails to reflect the true depth of football talent in Western and Nyanza, where school competitions are often fiercely contested and produce players who go on to represent Kenya at higher levels.

He believes the existing quota system locks out numerous teams that are capable of competing favourably at the national stage, effectively denying deserving schools and players the opportunity to showcase their abilities.

Khalwale is pushing KSSSA to review its qualification criteria and expand the number of slots allocated to the two regions, arguing that such a move would better represent their standing in the national school football landscape.

He contends that increasing representation would not only reward the regions’ consistent performance but also motivate more schools to invest in developing football talent, knowing there would be a fairer chance of progressing to the national games.

Hon. Boni Khalwale, Senator, Kakamega County

The senator’s remarks add to a growing conversation around how regional qualification slots are distributed within Kenya’s school sports structure.

With stakeholders in various counties often raising concerns that the current system does not fully capture the competitive balance across different zones.

For Western and Nyanza, regions with a long history of nurturing football talent through school competitions, the debate touches on broader questions of resource allocation, fairness, and opportunity for young athletes.

Advocates for expanding slots argue that more teams reaching the national stage would raise the overall standard of competition and give a wider pool of players exposure to scouts, coaches, and opportunities beyond secondary school.

It remains to be seen how KSSSA will respond to Khalwale’s call, but the senator’s intervention is likely to put pressure on the association to revisit its qualification framework ahead of future editions of the National Secondary Schools Games.

  • Spain outclass France, books ticket to World Cup Final in New Jersey

Spain outclass France, books ticket to World Cup Final in New Jersey

Spain secured their place in the World Cup final for the first time since 2010 with a 2-0 win over France in Tuesday’s semifinal.

Mikel Oyarzabal put Spain ahead from the penalty spot in the first half after a foul on Lamine Yamal inside the box. Pedro Porro added a second early in the second half, finishing off a quick passing move with Dani Olmo to make it 2-0.

It was Spain’s third consecutive win over France, having also gotten the better of them in recent European Championship and Nations League meetings. Spain’s defense was the story of the night, holding Kylian Mbappé and France to almost no clear chances throughout the match.

The loss also brought an end to France’s hopes of reaching a third straight World Cup final, a run only two other nations have managed in tournament history.

Spain will face the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between England and Argentina in Sunday’s final, set for MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

This marks only the second World Cup final appearance in Spain’s history, following their title-winning run in 2010. The win also extended Spain’s unbeaten streak to one of the longest in the sport’s modern history.

France will play their final match of the tournament in the third-place playoff in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Saturday.

  • France vs Spain: Old rivals renew hostilities in World Cup semi-final rematch

France vs Spain: Old rivals renew hostilities in World Cup semi-final rematch

Two of European football’s most storied nations, France and Spain, are set to clash once again as they meet in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026, a rematch of their Euro 2024 semi-final showdown.

The historic rivalry, which dates back to 1922, sees Spain holding a narrow overall advantage with 18 wins from 38 meetings, compared to France’s 13, while seven matches have ended in draws.

Recent history has favoured La Roja, who edged Les Bleus 2-1 in the Euro 2024 semi-final before producing an even more dramatic result in last year’s UEFA Nations League semi-final, a stunning 5-4 thriller.

Both nations arrive in Atlanta on the back of impressive quarter-final performances.

Spain overcame Belgium 2-1, continuing their momentum from recent tournaments, while France edged past Morocco 2-0 to book their place in the last four.

The clash also renews one of the tournament’s most anticipated individual duels, with Kylian Mbappé going head-to-head against Spain’s rising star Lamine Yamal.

Yamal has been directly involved in deciding two of the last three meetings between the sides.

Despite Spain’s dominance in recent knockout meetings, France retain one notable psychological edge, they have never lost to Spain at a World Cup.

The two nations have not met at the tournament since 2006, when France won 3-1 in the Round of 16.

The two European heavyweights will face off in the semi-finals at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with a place in the World Cup final on the line.

All set ahead of Uzalendo Half Marathon’

The Eldama Ravine Education Foundation (EREF), in partnership with Uzalendo School and Athletics Kenya Baringo, officially launched the 2026 Uzalendo Half Marathon in Nairobi on 13th July 2026.

The event, held under the theme “Running for Patriotism, Education & Kenya’s Future,” is designed to raise funds supporting the education of bright but financially disadvantaged students, while also promoting patriotism, talent development and community participation.

Speaking at the launch, ICT and Digital Economy PS John Tanui highlighted the marathon’s role in shaping future leaders, noting that education remains central to unlocking students’ potential.

He revealed that Uzalendo School, established in 2016, has educated more than 1,000 students to date, with 397 learners benefiting from full scholarships through EREF at a cumulative investment exceeding KSh54 million.

He added that the school has consistently produced graduates who have gone on to become industry leaders across the country.

Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, Arts and Heritage Hon. Hanna Wendot Cheptumo also addressed the launch, urging Kenyans to rally behind the initiative.

She described investment in education as one of the most enduring acts of patriotism, calling on the private sector, development partners and the public to support the marathon and help transform it into a lasting national movement.

Organisers confirmed that winners across the various race categories will share prize money totalling over KSh1.5 million.

On funding allocation, proceeds from the marathon will be channelled into three areas: 80 percent will go toward the Uzalendo Endowment Fund to guarantee sustainable scholarship financing, 15 percent will support priority infrastructure development at Uzalendo School, while the remaining 5 percent will finance community social responsibility initiatives in Eldama Ravine and Mogotio sub-counties.

The marathon will feature five race categories to encourage participation across all age groups: the 21km Uzalendo Half Marathon (Men & Women), a 10km race, a 5km Youth Run for secondary school and college students, a 5km Corporate Fun Run, and a 2km Children’s Dash for primary and junior school pupils.

The inaugural edition of the revived marathon is set for Saturday, 18th July 2026, starting at Emining Junction in Mogotio Sub-County and concluding at the Koibatek Agricultural Training Centre (ATC) Grounds in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County.

The event is expected to attract elite athletes, amateur runners, corporates, schools, institutions and members of the public from across Kenya and the wider East African region.

  • Go and Conquer, President Ruto to Harambee Starlets and Junior Starlets

Go and Conquer, President Ruto to Harambee Starlets and Junior Starlets

President William Ruto flagged off the Harambee Starlets and Junior Starlets at State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday as they prepare to represent Kenya at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, respectively, in Morocco.

The President commended the Junior Starlets for qualifying for the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup for the second time in history.

“You are going to Morocco to wear the colours of Kenya on the biggest stage in world football. There is no greater honour for any sportsman or sportswoman than representing your motherland before the world,” he said.

He also commended Harambee Starlets for qualifying for the 2026 WAFCON, which takes place in Morocco between 25 July, 2026, and 16 August, 2026.

“The country is truly proud of your achievement, and we shall be cheering you on as you represent us at the continental level,” he said.

The President noted that this achievement is not an accident.

“Nations that consistently excel in sport invest in young people long before the world knows their names. That is exactly what Kenya is doing,” he said.

President Ruto explained that the Government is making deliberate and targeted investments in the sports sector to nurture talent and raise sports standards in the country.

At the grassroots, the President pointed out that more than 10,000 young athletes are currently enrolled in structured development programmes run through schools, county governments, and the Kenya Academy of Sports.

Additionally, he said the Government is investing in the training of more than 6,000 coaches, trainers, physiotherapists, and sports administrators.

The training has been in specialised capacity-building programmes through the Kenya Academy of Sports and national federations.

On sports infrastructure, he said Talanta Sports City in Nairobi is now 95 per cent complete.

Additionally, President Ruto said the Government is building 32 modern stadia designed to be far more than sporting venues across the country.

“Our commitment goes beyond infrastructure. In the last financial year alone, the Government invested KSh4.5 billion to support our national teams, covering accommodation, kits, allowances, and logistics so that our athletes can train and compete in dignity,” he said.

Furthermore, the President said the Government will also ensure national team players benefit from the Social Health Authority medical cover and the Affordable Housing Programme.

He cited the story of Elizabeth Opiyo, who is only 16 years old and a Grade Nine student at Onding’ Junior Secondary School in Gem, Siaya County, noting that she daily balances her studies with football and athletics, competing in both the 200 metres and 400 metres.

“Your journey reminds us that excellence has no age, and that discipline in the classroom and discipline on the playing field reinforce each other,” he said.

He challenged the Junior Starlets team to aim to qualify from the group stages.

“Believe that you can compete with anyone FIFA places before you,” he said.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the Government will continue developing sports infrastructure and relevant policies to ensure sports pays.

Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohamed commended President Ruto for his commitment to supporting sports.

He noted that this is the first administration to prioritise the sports sector with major investment in sports development, citing the construction of 32 stadia.

Junior Starlets Head Coach Mildred Cheche said the team is committed to going beyond the group stages.

On her part, Junior Starlets Captain Beverline Awour thanked the Government for supporting the team throughout their journey.

Harambee Starlets captain Mwanalima Adam said the team is working hard to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

She noted that it has not been easy to qualify for WAFCON twice.

  • Tusker boost firepower with Ivorian winger signing from Saudi Pro League

Tusker boost firepower with Ivorian winger signing from Saudi Pro League

Tusker FC have completed the signing of Ivorian winger Aboubacar Doumbia, as the Brewers continue an ambitious squad overhaul ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 25-year-old joins from Saudi Arabian First Division side Al Orobah, arriving with experience gathered across three different leagues.

Before his move to Saudi Arabia, Doumbia played for Karmiotissa in Cyprus and turned out for a trio of Israeli clubs, Hapoel Haifa, Maccabi Netanya and Maccabi Petah Tikva, where he built a reputation as a pacey, versatile right winger.

On the international stage, Doumbia represented Ivory Coast at the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations before featuring at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

He has also turned out for the Elephants at U-20 and U-23 level and has earned a senior national team cap, giving Tusker a player with genuine continental and international exposure.

He becomes the club’s third major signing of the transfer window, following the arrivals of Abud Omar, who returns to Ruaraka a decade after his previous spell and Nigerian striker Victor Mbaoma from Remo Stars.

The signing forms part of one of the most extensive rebuilds seen in the FKF Premier League in recent years.

Tusker finished ninth in a disappointing 2025/26 campaign despite winning the Mozzart Bet Cup, prompting the club to release 20 players and plan for as many as 19 incoming signings before the window shuts.

Competition and continental football on the horizon, including the FKF Premier League, a Mozzart Bet Cup defence, the CECAFA Kagame Cup, and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Head coach Julien Mette is building a squad capable of challenging rivals Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Kenya Police and Nairobi United, all of whom have strengthened this window significantly.

  • Gor Mahia land Ksh7.5 million deal with electric mobility firm Spiro

Gor Mahia land Ksh7.5 million deal with electric mobility firm Spiro

Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia FC have agreed a new annual sponsorship arrangement with electric mobility company Spiro, worth Ksh 7.5 million, making the firm the club’s official partner in that category.

Club patron Eliud Owalo confirmed the news on social media on July 13, 2026, describing the timing as important given the club’s demanding schedule ahead.

This includes the CECAFA Championship, the domestic league season, and continental assignments in CAF competitions.

Officials from both organisations attended a signing ceremony to formalise the partnership, with Owalo praising the collaboration as a step forward for the sport locally.

For Spiro, the agreement marks its first major sponsorship involvement with a club in Kenya’s top flight, expanding its brand presence into local football.

For Gor Mahia, it represents another addition to an increasingly active commercial calendar.

The Spiro deal follows closely on the heels of a separate three-year, Ksh30 million agreement the club signed with paint manufacturer Kansai Plascon earlier this season.

Together, the two deals point to a broader effort by the club’s management to diversify revenue streams and strengthen its financial base as it prepares for a season likely to test
