Kaptimbor FC win Baringo peace tourney

Kaptimbor Fc emerged winners of the Baringo County Interfaith peace football tournament after beating Ndambul Fc 1-0 in a terse final played at Marigat Primary School grounds,Baringo South Sub County.

The tournament was sponsored by Inter Religious Council of Kenya, IRCK, held the tournament to harness harmonious existence between communities in the area.

“We have been working with youth in the county for the past four years and we are glad that we have made good progress from the success stories of the youth who received training and capacity building on peace as we have reached out to over 500 youths hence lives impacted,” said  Caroline Maina, programme officer at IRCK.

Salim Marjan, a member of the Baringo Interfaith Youth Network and player for Ndambul FC from Marigat Sub-County said they were glad to have participated in the match despite the fact that they did not win noting that peaceful co-existence and the message of peace was far more important than winning the match and would go a long way in boosting development.

“We have a total of ten football clubs across the county and we would like to urge well-wishers together with the County Government to support us because holding these matches can be so expensive. In addition, we have managed to rehabilitate 90 percent of youth who were into drug abuse since they are no longer idle,” Marjan said.

Gladys Cheserem, another youth from Baringo Central Sub-County thanked the organization for the numerous training on peace and environment conservation.

“Through our local churches and mosques, we are disseminating the peace message and economic empowerment message to the youth and encouraging them to do farming and become self-employed. We are glad that through this more youth are now running small businesses hence are self-reliant,” Cheserem said.

Bishop Musa Kamuren from the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) said the training and peace tournaments were beneficial for the change of mindset of youth.

Kaptimbor FC  are the reigning Football Kenya Federation County league champions and were recently promoted to the regional league next season.

  • Kai Havertz scores as Arsenal beat MLS All-Stars 5-0

Kai Havertz scores as Arsenal beat MLS All-Stars 5-0

Arsenal beat MLS All Stars 5-0 At Audi Field on Thursday as the gunners gear up for the start of the EPL  on August 12th against Nottingham Forest.

Marquinhos sent a cross to the far post from the right wing in the final minute of Arsenal’s 5-0 win against Major League Soccer’s All-Stars, Havertz steadied himself, controlled on his chest and smashed a strike into the far corner.

That’s the thing about football. Deliver when it matters.

Evidently, there will be nights that matter far more than this for Arsenal.

Yet, on a sweltering evening, in front of a crowd in excess of 20,000 at Audi Field, the majority of whom were Gunners supporters and who cheered co-chair Josh Kroenke when he was introduced as part of the pre-match presentation party, Havertz was not alone in feeling satisfied with his performance.

It’s a footnote but it was the biggest win ever by a European side in the All-Star game.

“Really pleased,” was manager Mikel Arteta’s assessment after goals from Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard, Jorginho, Gabriel Martinelli and Havertz gave his side victory.

Havertz can be Arteta’s flexible friend

When social media clips of his efforts on Tuesday started doing the rounds, they generated a lot of sarcastic responses, something he experienced during his time at Chelsea, which could be described as erratic.

Yet, in the end, he was being asked to play a role he was ill suited to.

Arteta wants Havertz as a flexible attacking player. Evidently, Jesus will play as a central striker but the German was pushed up alongside him near the end after initially being introduced on the left of a three-man midfield, operating ahead of Jorginho, who was the anchor.

“He gives us something different with his quality and his height,” said Arteta.

“For example, he can be the target man if we need to beat the press. He’s playing at the attacking midfield position for now but I’m sure throughout the season he’ll be used in different positions.”

    Timber catches the eye

Jurrien Timber’s arrival at Arsenal has almost gone under the radar.

Signed from Ajax in a £34m deal after Arsenal won a battle involving numerous Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Timber’s signing was announced less than 24 hours before Declan Rice’s much more high-profile move from West Ham.

Even in Washington, he came on at the same time as Rice, ensuring most eyes were trained on the England man as he settled himself in for the final 26 minutes.

But it soon became obvious Timber will have a significant role this season.

When Arsenal had the ball, he slipped into the inverted midfield role Arteta’s former boss Pep Guardiola has introduced at Manchester City.

The Netherlands international looked confident on the ball, is quick and can pass. He also spots danger and slips easily into the position of a more orthodox right-sided defender.

“He is a really versatile player,” said Arteta. “He gives you the capacity to invert and occupy different spaces. He’s so comfortable on the ball in that phase.

“As well as that, he’s got aggression in the duels and that dynamism which I really like. You saw with his first action, which was a high press, he won the ball straight away, won the duel and was ready to go.

“He is going to be a really important player for us.”

    Trossard to be checked

Arsenal now move on to New Jersey, where they will take on Manchester United at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.

Arteta said Trossard would be assessed after needing treatment for an injury that triggered his immediate withdrawal.

“We don’t want to take any risks at this stage,” said Arteta. “He had some pain and we’ll see how he is tomorrow but I don’t expect it to be anything big.”

  • Benjamin Mendy: Former Manchester City defender signs for Lorient

Benjamin Mendy: Former Manchester City defender signs for Lorient

Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has signed for Ligue 1 side Lorient five days after being cleared of rape.

The left-back, 29, whose City contract expired in the summer, has signed a two-year deal with the French club.

He was cleared at Chester Crown Court on Friday of raping a woman and attempting to rape another.

That followed a trial in January when Mendy was cleared of six counts of rape  and one of sexual assault.

Mendy became the world’s most expensive defenderwhenCity paid Monaco £52m to sign the France defender in 2017.

City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain described him as “one of the world’s best full-backs” when the highly rated defender joined the club.

He won the Premier League in his first season with City before being part of the France squad that claimed the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

However, he last played competitive football in August 2021, appearing for City at Tottenham Hotspur.

Mendy was arrested later that month and remanded in custody for five months before going to trial for the first time last August.

Jurors failed to reach verdicts on two counts of rape and attempted rape, prompting the re-trial at which he was acquitted last week.

The portrait painted of him during the case led to his own legal team, led by Eleanor Laws KC, to state that “life, as he knew it, is over, in football in the UK”.

After he was acquitted, several high-profile players including Netherlands forward Memphis Depay and Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr showed their support for Mendy on social media.

Lorient, who finished 10th in Ligue 1 last season, announced Mendy’s return to French football in a statement: “Benjamin Mendy, world champion 2018, quadruple winner of the Premier League under the colours of Manchester City and French champion of Ligue 1 with Monaco, comes to reinforce the Lorient workforce for this new season. Welcome Benjamin.”

The French club play at Bournemouth in a pre-season friendly on 5 August and will begin their league campaign at champions Paris St-Germain on 13 August.

  • Andre Onana: Manchester United agree deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper

Andre Onana: Manchester United agree deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper

Manchester United have agreed a 55m euro deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The Old Trafford club will pay £43.8m up front for the Cameroon player, with an additional £3.4m in add-ons.

United hope he will be able to join them on their upcoming tour of the United States – although they have to arrange a visa for the 27-year-old.

Manager Erik ten Hag moved for the keeper at the end of the season after previously working with him at Ajax.

He feels Onana can be a significant addition to United’s squad and his decision prompted David de Gea to turn down a new contract offer at the club.

De Gea was United’s first-choice keeper for the past 12 years, making 545 appearances after joining the club under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Spaniard’s 190 clean sheets are a club record for a goalkeeper.

Onana spent seven-and-a-half years at Ajax before moving to Inter in July 2022.

He kept eight clean sheets in 24 Serie A games as Inter finished third and no team scored past him in 13 of their matches in the Champions League last season – the most of any goalkeeper in the competition.

He played against Manchester City in the Champions League final in June as Inter lost 1-0.

Onana will be United’s second signing of the summer after the arrival of midfielder Mason Mount from Chelsea for an initial £55m.

The keeper retired from international football in December after falling out with Cameroon boss Rigobert Song at the World Cup

  • Commonwealth Games: 2026 event in doubt after Victoria cancels

Commonwealth Games: 2026 event in doubt after Victoria cancels

The 2026 Commonwealth Games are in doubt after the Australian state of Victoria cancelled its plans to host due to budget blowouts.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) struggled to find a host before Victoria volunteered in April 2022.

But the premier said the projected cost had now tripled and become “well and truly too much” for the state to bear.

CGF called the decision “hugely disappointing” and said it is “committed to finding a solution”.

The Commonwealth Games are a multi-sport tournament that take place every four years. They have only ever been cancelled during World War Two.

To be eligible to participate in the games, competitors must be from one of the Commonwealth’s 56 members. Most of the countries in the Commonwealth were once part of the British Empire.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews on Tuesday said Victoria had been “happy to help out” when approached to host last year, but “not at any price”.

Organisers had originally estimated the event – hosted across cities including Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat – would cost A$2.6bn (£1.4bn; $1.8bn) and the state government had billed it as a boost for the regions.

Australia has held the Commonwealth Games five times – including on the Gold Coast in 2018 and in the Victorian capital of Melbourne in 2006 – but all of the country’s states on Tuesday ruled out picking up the event.

New Zealand authorities also say they will not take on the games.

Organisers have had great difficulty finding viable tournament hosts in recent years.

The South African city of Durban was originally set to stage the 2022 games, but were stripped of hosting rights in 2017  after running into money troubles and missing key deadlines. Birmingham agreed to host nine months later.
