PCEA Mai A Ihii Booth High School closed after principal’s arrest

PCEA Mai a Ihii Booth High School in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, has been closed indefinitely as authorities investigate allegations of sexual abuse involving the school’s principal.

Kikuyu Sub-County Director of Education Jeremiah Kipaiyu said the decision was made after an assessment established that the institution could not continue operating safely following the loss of its key administrators.

“We established that the school is facing significant safety challenges due to the absence of essential members of the administration,” Kipaiyu said.

He explained that without the school’s leadership, effective supervision of learners, maintenance of discipline and the day-to-day management of the institution had been disrupted.

“At this point, the school may not be in a position to effectively handle emergencies or other risks. The Ministry will facilitate the deployment of new administrators and put in place the necessary measures before learning resumes,” he added.

The closure follows the arrest of the principal on Monday after parents reported allegations that he had sexually abused several learners.

The principal by the name Timothy Chege has since been arraigned and charged with committing an indecent act against a child.

According to investigators, the allegations emerged after some students disclosed to their parents that they had allegedly been inappropriately touched inside the principal’s office.

Police say investigations are ongoing and believe additional victims could come forward as detectives continue gathering information.

Kikuyu Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Ndegwa said the chairperson of the school’s Board of Management was also arrested after detectives established that he had allegedly interfered with investigations.

“He was attempting to obstruct investigations, forcing us to take legal action. Our investigations show the alleged incidents had been taking place for some time before they came to light,” Ndegwa said.

He added that investigations had so far linked the principal to allegations of inappropriate touching of male students.

The Board chairperson was later charged with obstruction of justice after allegedly trying to resolve the matter outside the legal process.

Meanwhile, detectives continue to interview students, teachers and other witnesses to determine the full extent of the case. The police commander said the court will decide whether to grant the principal bail after considering the progress of investigations and the possibility of interference with witnesses or other evidence.

Kenya extends 8pc VAT on fuel by three months until October

The government has issued a three month extension on 8pc Value Added Tax on petrol and diesel until October 14, 2026 ahead of fuel price review expected later on Tuesday.

In a statement, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said the extension which has been done in consultation with the National Treasury is part of interventions taken by the government to provide confidence that the country can maintain a reliable and uninterrupted fuel supply amid heightened volatility in the global markets.

“These interventions reflect our broader commitment to protecting consumers, supporting businesses and safeguarding the economy from external shocks while ensuring that petroleum products remain as affordable as possible under prevailing global market conditions,” said Wandayi.

In the July-August pricing cycle, the government will also draw Ksh 945 million from the Petroleum Development Levy Fund to subsidize prices which will be published by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

Despite the resumption of the war between Iran and the United States leading to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, Wandayi has also maintained the the country has sufficient fuel stock and uninterrupted supply of the commodity under the Government-to-Government arragement.

“I therefore wish to reassure motorists, public transport operators, manufacturers, farmers, businesses, investors and all consumers that there is adequate fuel across the country and that the Government remains steadfast in ensuring that that particular situation continues to obtain for the long haul,” he added.

In a bid to cushion consumers from further fuel price hikes, Treasury announced VAT cut on petrol and diesel in April this year from 16pc to 8pc.

France vs Spain: Old rivals renew hostilities in World Cup semi-final rematch

Two of European football’s most storied nations, France and Spain, are set to clash once again as they meet in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026, a rematch of their Euro 2024 semi-final showdown.

The historic rivalry, which dates back to 1922, sees Spain holding a narrow overall advantage with 18 wins from 38 meetings, compared to France’s 13, while seven matches have ended in draws.

Recent history has favoured La Roja, who edged Les Bleus 2-1 in the Euro 2024 semi-final before producing an even more dramatic result in last year’s UEFA Nations League semi-final, a stunning 5-4 thriller.

Both nations arrive in Atlanta on the back of impressive quarter-final performances.

Spain overcame Belgium 2-1, continuing their momentum from recent tournaments, while France edged past Morocco 2-0 to book their place in the last four.

The clash also renews one of the tournament’s most anticipated individual duels, with Kylian Mbappé going head-to-head against Spain’s rising star Lamine Yamal.

Yamal has been directly involved in deciding two of the last three meetings between the sides.

Despite Spain’s dominance in recent knockout meetings, France retain one notable psychological edge, they have never lost to Spain at a World Cup.

The two nations have not met at the tournament since 2006, when France won 3-1 in the Round of 16.

The two European heavyweights will face off in the semi-finals at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with a place in the World Cup final on the line.

  • UDA women MPs call for peace, back President’s re-election bid

UDA women MPs call for peace, back President’s re-election bid

Women Members of Parliament elected on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket have called for peace and unity across the country, urging young people not to allow themselves to be manipulated by politicians into engaging in violence and goonism.

The leaders made the appeal while speaking in Marigat, Baringo South Constituency, during an economic empowerment programme for youth and women groups.

The event was led by Kericho Woman Representative and brought together several UDA women leaders from different counties.

The legislators emphasized that Kenya’s peace and stability should take precedence over political competition, noting that elections are temporary events while the country’s unity is permanent.

They urged young people to reject incitement and instead embrace peaceful coexistence regardless of their political affiliations.

The women leaders expressed concern over the recent rise in politically instigated violence, where groups of youths have allegedly been hired to disrupt political meetings and intimidate opponents.

They described the trend as a serious threat to national security and warned that such actions undermine democracy and peaceful political engagement.

Nandi Woman Representative condemned the practice of using unemployed youths to cause chaos during political rallies, saying it exploits vulnerable young people for selfish political interests.

She challenged leaders across the political divide to promote issue-based politics instead of encouraging violence and disorder.

The MPs also encouraged the government to continue investing in youth empowerment programmes aimed at creating employment opportunities and improving livelihoods. They said economic empowerment remains one of the most effective ways of protecting young people from political exploitation.

At the same event, the UDA women leaders declared their support for President William Ruto’s bid for a second term in office.

They argued that the President has fulfilled many of his development promises and pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects, expanded social programmes, and economic reforms as evidence of his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of Kenyans.

They maintained that the Kenya Kwanza administration deserves another term to complete its development agenda and urged wananchi to continue supporting the government’s programmes.

Baringo Woman Representative Florence Jematia expressed confidence that the ruling party would emerge victorious in the forthcoming Ol Kalou by-election. She said UDA enjoys widespread support in the area and remains focused on delivering development to residents.

Jematia also criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of promoting tribal politics. She urged leaders to champion national unity and inclusive leadership, saying Kenya’s progress depends on leaders who bring citizens together rather than dividing them along ethnic lines.

  • Go and Conquer, President Ruto to Harambee Starlets and Junior Starlets

Go and Conquer, President Ruto to Harambee Starlets and Junior Starlets

President William Ruto flagged off the Harambee Starlets and Junior Starlets at State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday as they prepare to represent Kenya at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, respectively, in Morocco.

The President commended the Junior Starlets for qualifying for the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup for the second time in history.

“You are going to Morocco to wear the colours of Kenya on the biggest stage in world football. There is no greater honour for any sportsman or sportswoman than representing your motherland before the world,” he said.

He also commended Harambee Starlets for qualifying for the 2026 WAFCON, which takes place in Morocco between 25 July, 2026, and 16 August, 2026.

“The country is truly proud of your achievement, and we shall be cheering you on as you represent us at the continental level,” he said.

The President noted that this achievement is not an accident.

“Nations that consistently excel in sport invest in young people long before the world knows their names. That is exactly what Kenya is doing,” he said.

President Ruto explained that the Government is making deliberate and targeted investments in the sports sector to nurture talent and raise sports standards in the country.

At the grassroots, the President pointed out that more than 10,000 young athletes are currently enrolled in structured development programmes run through schools, county governments, and the Kenya Academy of Sports.

Additionally, he said the Government is investing in the training of more than 6,000 coaches, trainers, physiotherapists, and sports administrators.

The training has been in specialised capacity-building programmes through the Kenya Academy of Sports and national federations.

On sports infrastructure, he said Talanta Sports City in Nairobi is now 95 per cent complete.

Additionally, President Ruto said the Government is building 32 modern stadia designed to be far more than sporting venues across the country.

“Our commitment goes beyond infrastructure. In the last financial year alone, the Government invested KSh4.5 billion to support our national teams, covering accommodation, kits, allowances, and logistics so that our athletes can train and compete in dignity,” he said.

Furthermore, the President said the Government will also ensure national team players benefit from the Social Health Authority medical cover and the Affordable Housing Programme.

He cited the story of Elizabeth Opiyo, who is only 16 years old and a Grade Nine student at Onding’ Junior Secondary School in Gem, Siaya County, noting that she daily balances her studies with football and athletics, competing in both the 200 metres and 400 metres.

“Your journey reminds us that excellence has no age, and that discipline in the classroom and discipline on the playing field reinforce each other,” he said.

He challenged the Junior Starlets team to aim to qualify from the group stages.

“Believe that you can compete with anyone FIFA places before you,” he said.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the Government will continue developing sports infrastructure and relevant policies to ensure sports pays.

Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohamed commended President Ruto for his commitment to supporting sports.

He noted that this is the first administration to prioritise the sports sector with major investment in sports development, citing the construction of 32 stadia.

Junior Starlets Head Coach Mildred Cheche said the team is committed to going beyond the group stages.

On her part, Junior Starlets Captain Beverline Awour thanked the Government for supporting the team throughout their journey.

Harambee Starlets captain Mwanalima Adam said the team is working hard to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

She noted that it has not been easy to qualify for WAFCON twice.

Tusker boost firepower with Ivorian winger signing from Saudi Pro League

Tusker FC have completed the signing of Ivorian winger Aboubacar Doumbia, as the Brewers continue an ambitious squad overhaul ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 25-year-old joins from Saudi Arabian First Division side Al Orobah, arriving with experience gathered across three different leagues.

Before his move to Saudi Arabia, Doumbia played for Karmiotissa in Cyprus and turned out for a trio of Israeli clubs, Hapoel Haifa, Maccabi Netanya and Maccabi Petah Tikva, where he built a reputation as a pacey, versatile right winger.

On the international stage, Doumbia represented Ivory Coast at the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations before featuring at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

He has also turned out for the Elephants at U-20 and U-23 level and has earned a senior national team cap, giving Tusker a player with genuine continental and international exposure.

He becomes the club’s third major signing of the transfer window, following the arrivals of Abud Omar, who returns to Ruaraka a decade after his previous spell and Nigerian striker Victor Mbaoma from Remo Stars.

The signing forms part of one of the most extensive rebuilds seen in the FKF Premier League in recent years.

Tusker finished ninth in a disappointing 2025/26 campaign despite winning the Mozzart Bet Cup, prompting the club to release 20 players and plan for as many as 19 incoming signings before the window shuts.

Competition and continental football on the horizon, including the FKF Premier League, a Mozzart Bet Cup defence, the CECAFA Kagame Cup, and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Head coach Julien Mette is building a squad capable of challenging rivals Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Kenya Police and Nairobi United, all of whom have strengthened this window significantly.
