PS Omollo lauds women as pillars of national development

Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo has hailed women as the backbone of families, community cohesion and national development, saying their role in shaping social and economic stability remains central to Kenya’s progress.

Speaking in Nairobi during a women’s empowerment forum, Dr. Omollo said women continue to anchor key pillars of society, including education, healthcare, household welfare and local economic activity.

He urged residents to deepen cooperation with local administration structures, including chiefs, assistant chiefs and village elders, to strengthen grassroots security and improve early response to emerging challenges.

“Security begins with all of us. When communities work closely with Government administrators, we are able to identify challenges early, support vulnerable youth and create a safe environment for families and businesses to thrive,” he said.

The PS observed that sustained security remains a prerequisite for economic growth, adding that the Government is committed to maintaining peace and stability across the country.

He highlighted the Affordable Housing Programme as one of the flagship interventions driving both social and economic transformation, saying it is expanding access to decent housing while generating jobs and business opportunities.

“The affordable housing programme is not only providing decent homes but is also creating jobs and business opportunities for wananchi. We want residents to prepare themselves to benefit from these houses once they are completed so that more families can enjoy dignified living conditions with access to water, electricity and sanitation,” he said.

On healthcare, the PS urged households to register under the Social Health Authority (SHA), arguing that universal access to affordable medical care is critical for family welfare and financial protection.

He said ongoing reforms in the health sector are aimed at shielding Kenyans from catastrophic medical costs and ensuring equitable access to services.

“Every family should be registered under SHA. No Kenyan should be forced to choose between seeking medical treatment and meeting basic household needs. The Government is committed to protecting families from the burden of catastrophic healthcare costs,” he said.

Dr. Omollo called on women to take a leading role in supporting learning within households and communities, describing education as the strongest driver of social mobility.

He said the Government has allocated approximately Ksh780 billion to the sector and recruited more than 100,000 teachers over the last three years as part of ongoing efforts to improve access to quality education.

He also cited ongoing investments in education infrastructure, particularly in Nairobi, where additional classrooms and expanded facilities are being constructed to address overcrowding in schools.

“In many schools across Nairobi, classrooms have been overstretched due to rising enrolment. The Government has invested heavily in expanding education infrastructure because every child deserves a conducive learning environment. Education remains the greatest equalizer, giving children from all backgrounds an opportunity to succeed and build a better future,” he said.

Dr. Omollo encouraged women to take advantage of emerging opportunities within Government administration, including future recruitment opportunities for Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs, emphasizing the need for greater female representation in leadership and public service.

“We need more women in leadership because they bring unique strengths to governance, community mobilization and service delivery. I encourage qualified women to step forward whenever opportunities arise and contribute to nationbuilding,” he said.

He further reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to inclusive development and called on wananchi to continue supporting initiatives aimed at uplifting families, empowering women and accelerating socio-economic transformation across the country.

  • Murkomen defends govt-backed empowerment drives

    Murkomen defends govt-backed empowerment drives

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has defended empowerment programmes spearheaded by leaders allied to the Government.

The CS said the programs are a key component of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) aimed at boosting livelihoods at the grassroots.

Murkomen said the government will continue supporting self-help groups, describing them as effective vehicles for mobilising communities, expanding economic opportunities and accelerating local development.

“We will continue supporting these self-help groups because they align perfectly with our bottom-up economic model,” he said.

Speaking during an empowerment drive for local self-help groups at Kaptilol Grounds in Kaptarakwa Ward, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, the CS said such initiatives complement government efforts to improve household incomes by supporting farmers, small businesses and community groups.

The event was organised by Elgeyo-Marakwet Woman Representative Caroline Ng’elechei which saw farmers receive agricultural inputs to boost production.

“Kaptarakwa is a rich agricultural area with great potential for more productivity. Today, farmers in the area benefited from farm inputs courtesy of the empowerment initiative,” said Murkomen.

He also updated the residents on the progress of government projects in the region that cut across security, housing, education, roads, environment and health sectors.

The CS was accompanied by Governor Wisley Rotich, Senator William Kisang, County MP Caroline Ng’elechei, Keiyo South MP Dr. Gideon Kimaiyo, County Commissioner David Kosgei, County Police Commander Peter Mulinge, and MCAs led by the area MCA Mathew Cheruiyot, among other leaders.

KCA University gives over 2,900 power to read, launches Korean Language Centre

KCA University has marked two decades of nurturing holistic globally competitive graduates, conferring more than 2,900 graduands with degrees, diplomas and certificates in its 20th graduation ceremony, and using the milestone occasion to launch a Korean Language Centre that deepens the country’s widening educational partnership with the Republic of Korea.

Held at the university’s main campus in Ruaraka, Nairobi, on Friday 3rd July, 2026, under the theme “Learn! Lead! Transform!”, the first bi-annual ceremony brought together university leadership, members of the diplomatic community, industry leaders, alumni, parents and graduating students, to celebrate an institution that has grown from a specialised accountancy college into a multi-disciplinary university whose graduates now serve across business, technology, arts, media and the public sector.

Chancellor FCPA Dr. Martin Oduor-Otieno said today’s event was a moment to take stock of two decades of institutional growth and its contribution to Kenya’s higher education sector.

“We take pride in acknowledging the immense growth this institution has had over the years,” he said. “When you mark 10 years, 20 years, that remains a milestone in the history of this university. It goes to show how much the institution has contributed to the progress of the education sector in the country.”

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaiah I.C. Wakindiki congratulated the graduating class and urged them to lead with integrity and to regard themselves as creators of employment rather than seekers of it, a call directed at a generation entering one of the most competitive job markets in the region.

“Lead with integrity, and make a tremendous transformation by turning setbacks into milestones,” he said. “Education is not only for employment; it equips one with skills and empowers students not only to seek employment, but to create it for others as well.”

The graduating cohort spanned across master’s, undergraduate, and diploma programmes, as well as professional certificates, reflecting the breadth of the university’s academic portfolio. Awards were also conferred on outstanding students in recognition of excellence in scholarship, leadership and creativity across faculties, honouring individual achievement within the wider class.

The theme framed the graduation not as a conclusion but as a summons to leadership and enterprise, a message that carried weight against the backdrop of persistent youth unemployment, which remains among Kenya’s most pressing national challenges and a shared concern across much of the continent.

The day’s proceedings were crowned by the official launch of the Korean Language Centre, presided over by the chief guest, H.E. Kang Hyung-shik, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Kenya. The Centre is designed to equip students with Korean-language competency that opens access to scholarships, exchange programmes and employment opportunities in South Korea and beyond.

“The setting up of the Korean Language Centre at KCA University is one of the key steps that will contribute to the strengthening of diplomatic ties between Kenya and the Republic of Korea,” the Ambassador said. “This initiative will help in expanding opportunities for Kenyan students in the global market.”

The launch adds an international dimension to KCA University’s journey and situates the institution within a bilateral relationship that stretches back more than six decades. Kenya and the Republic of

Korea established diplomatic relations in 1964, when Seoul opened its first embassy in sub-Saharan Africa in Nairobi, and the two nations have since expanded cooperation across trade, technology, defence, environmental affairs and education.

For KCA University, the Centre positions the institution as an early mover in Korean-language training in the region, at a time when South Korea’s presence in technology, manufacturing, and popular culture continues to draw strong interest from young Kenyans. University leadership said the facility would evolve into a hub for cultural exchange and academic study, with scholarships and structured exchange programmes anticipated as the programme matures.

The university urged its newest graduates to carry its name with distinction and to apply their qualifications to the service of their communities and the wider economy, both at home and abroad.

For the class of July 2026, the ceremony marked both a personal achievement and an entry point into professional life not only as job seekers but also as job creators.

  • Nyanza residents urged to support government’s development agenda

Nyanza residents urged to support government’s development agenda

Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo has hailed the ongoing transformation of the Nyanza region under the Kenya Kwanza Administration, stating that the Government’s development agenda is finally ensuring equitable distribution of national resources and opportunities across all parts of the country.

Speaking during a women empowerment engagement in Nyando Constituency, Dr. Omollo said the region is witnessing unprecedented investment in infrastructure, flood control, economic empowerment, water projects, administrative services and youth development programmes, demonstrating the Government’s commitment to inclusive development regardless of political affiliation.

The PS noted that for many years, regions such as Nyanza lagged behind in critical development indicators due to unequal allocation of resources and limited public investment.

He said the Kenya Kwanza Administration has deliberately adopted a national outlook that treats all regions fairly and ensures that no Kenyan is left behind.

“Today, roads are being built, markets are being upgraded, affordable housing projects are taking shape, electricity connectivity is expanding and opportunities are being created for young people and women across the country. The question some people are asking is why Nyanza is being developed. The answer is simple: Nyanza is part of Kenya and its people deserve development just like every other Kenyan,” said Dr. Omollo.

He highlighted ongoing interventions aimed at addressing perennial flooding in the Kano Plains and surrounding areas, revealing that out of the planned 30 kilometres of dykes, 15 kilometres have already been completed through the Lake Basin Development Authority.

Additional funding has been allocated in the current Financial Year to facilitate further construction works, with the Government targeting completion of the remaining sections within Nyando and neighbouring flood-prone areas.

The PS further announced that the national plan to construct 50 mega dams across the country will benefit the region, with two dams earmarked for the Lake Region to support flood mitigation, irrigation and water supply.

Dr. Omollo also underscored the Government’s commitment to strengthening grassroots service delivery through the creation of additional administrative units and the recruitment of Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs to bring Government services closer to wananchi.

On youth empowerment, he urged young people to reject criminal activities and resist attempts by politicians to use them as agents of violence and destruction.

“Our youth must not be associated with criminal gangs, goons or lawlessness. The future of this region lies in education, enterprise, innovation and hard work. We must allow our security agencies to deal firmly with criminals while our young people focus on building their futures,” he said.

The PS also called on eligible residents to obtain National Identity Cards and register as voters, noting that civic participation remains a critical pillar of democratic governance and national development.

Dr. Omollo observed that the growing development footprint in Nyanza is evidence of President William Ruto’s commitment to building a united and inclusive Kenya where development is driven by need rather than politics.

He urged leaders and residents across the region to remain focused on peace, unity and development, saying sustained progress would only be achieved through stability, cooperation and active participation in Government programmes.

“The transformation taking place across Nyanza is not accidental. It is the result of deliberate leadership, inclusive governance and a commitment to ensuring that every region receives its fair share of national development. Our responsibility as leaders and citizens is to safeguard these gains and continue working together for the prosperity of our people,” he said

  • Govt reaffirms commitment to equitable development across the country

Govt reaffirms commitment to equitable development across the country

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to equitable development across the country in a bid to ensure balanced growth and fair access to public resources in all regions.

According to the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo, ongoing investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare and public administration are aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding opportunities for all Kenyans.

Speaking during a church service at Suneka District SDA Church in Bonchari Constituency, Kisii County, the PS highlighted the Government’s significant investment in education, noting that more than 100,000 teachers have been recruited over the past three years.

Additionally, over 23,000 classrooms have been constructed to improve access to quality education and enhance learning outcomes for children across the country.

Omollo further announced progress towards the upgrading of Suneka Airstrip, noting that implementation processes had been concluded and that the contractor is expected to commence works shortly.

He said the project will enhance connectivity, facilitate business and investment, and reduce the need for residents to travel long distances to access air transport services.

He also revealed that the Government is fast-tracking the operationalisation of several gazetted administrative units within Bonchari Constituency and other parts of Kisii County.

The move will see Government services brought closer to wananchi and improve access to critical services such as national identification cards, birth certificates and other public services.

The PS called upon residents to register under the Social Health Authority (SHA), noting that increased enrollment will ensure more families benefit from affordable and accessible healthcare services.

Omollo emphasised that development can only thrive in a peaceful and stable environment and urged wananchi to reject violence, destruction of property and political intolerance.

He called on citizens to embrace dialogue, unity and constructive engagement as key ingredients for sustainable development.

“The transformation of our country requires partnership between Government, the Church, community leaders and citizens. When we work together, we can build stronger communities, create more opportunities for our people and secure a brighter future for generations to come,” he said.

PS Omollo warns boda boda operators against being used for violence, goonism

Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo has cautioned boda boda operators against allowing themselves to be used by politicians and criminal elements to perpetrate violence, intimidate opponents or disrupt public order.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with boda boda operators and sector leaders in Vihiga County, Dr. Omollo said the Government will not tolerate goonism, hooliganism and politically instigated violence, warning that individuals involved in such activities will face the full force of the law.

He noted that while the boda boda sector remains one of the country’s most important economic drivers, a small number of rogue individuals have on occasion tarnished its reputation by participating in criminal activities and acts of violence.

The PS urged riders to reject attempts by politicians and other actors to exploit unemployment among young people by recruiting them to cause chaos, attack opponents or destroy property during political activities.

“No political interest is worth risking your life, your livelihood or your future. If there is a leader you support, support them peacefully. If there is a leader you do not support, continue with your work and your daily activities. Do not allow yourself to be used to commit acts of violence,” said Dr. Omollo.

The PS emphasized that the overwhelming majority of boda boda operators are hardworking and law-abiding citizens who earn an honest living and contribute significantly to the country’s economy.

He said the sector provides critical last-mile transport services that connect communities to markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services, making boda boda operators key partners in national development.

Dr. Omollo called on boda boda leaders to work closely with security agencies, Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, National Government Administrative Officers and local communities to identify and isolate criminal elements who seek to infiltrate the sector.

He noted that stronger collaboration between operators and security agencies would help address insecurity, prevent crime and protect the reputation of the industry.

The PS commended boda boda operators for the role they continue to play in supporting security efforts through information sharing and community vigilance, noting that their presence across villages and trading centres makes them valuable partners in maintaining public safety.

Dr. Omollo further urged operators to embrace Government programmes aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding economic opportunities, including registration under the Social Health Authority (SHA), investments in education, infrastructure development and initiatives to modernize the boda boda sector.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to promote electric motorcycles and affordable financing models that will reduce operating costs and increase earnings for riders, saying the Government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for the sector to thrive.

The PS observed that sustainable development can only be achieved in an environment of peace, security and stability and urged wananchi to reject violence and instead focus on productive activities that improve livelihoods and strengthen communities.

He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring that all citizens are free to conduct their businesses without fear or intimidation.

The engagement brought together boda boda leaders, National Government Administrative Officers, security officials and other stakeholders from across Vihiga County.

  • PS Kiptoo unveils ’10 to 20′ vision as Kaptagat Cycling Challenge kicks off saturday

PS Kiptoo unveils ’10 to 20′ vision as Kaptagat Cycling Challenge kicks off saturday

As cyclists prepare to converge at Kaptagat Farm Resort on Saturday for the fourth edition of the Kaptagat Cycling Challenge, National Treasury Principal Secretary and Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme (Kaptagat-ICP) Patron Dr. Chris Kiptoo has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to double the programme’s conservation impact over the next decade.

The 80-kilometre race, which will feature elite, para-cycling, junior, veteran and team categories, is expected to attract riders from across Kenya and neighbouring countries.

Winners will walk away with KSh200,000, but organisers say the real victory lies in restoring the Kaptagat Forest ecosystem while transforming lives in surrounding communities.

The event which is part of the ten years of the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme (Kaptagat-ICP), a community-led initiative founded in 2017 to restore the Kaptagat Forest, one of Kenya’s critical water towers within the Cherangani Hills ecosystem.

Speaking ahead of the race, Dr. Kiptoo said the challenge has evolved into far more than a sporting event.

“The Kaptagat Cycling Challenge is far more than a race. It is a celebration of purpose where sport, forest restoration and community livelihoods come together in one extraordinary experience. Every kilometer covered contributes to restoring the Kaptagat Forest, empowers the people who call it home, and inspires cyclists from across the country to give back to nature while experiencing one of the world’s premier high-altitude training environments,” he said.

To coincide with the anniversary, Dr. Kiptoo announced the launch of the programme’s “10 to 20” vision, which seeks to double its conservation and community impact over the next decade.

“As we mark the 10th edition of the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme, we are launching our ’10 to 20′ vision, a commitment to double our impact over the next decade. Our model uniquely integrates sports, conservation and sustainable livelihoods, proving that environmental protection and economic empowerment can advance together,” he said.

The initiative is anchored on four pillars, Pesa Mfukoni, Kawi Safi Nyumbani, Maji Nyumbani and Mazingira Safi, which promote sustainable livelihoods while reducing pressure on forest resources.

Reflecting on the programme’s journey, Dr. Kiptoo said conservation is ultimately about collective responsibility.

“It is about us. It is about humanity. Every time I plant a tree seedling, it reminds me that it’s not about me. It’s about us. It’s about humanity,” he said.

The Kaptagat Forest ecosystem spans more than 120,000 hectares of protected forest and is surrounded by a 240,000-hectare buffer zone that supports biodiversity, safeguards water resources and strengthens climate resilience across the Rift Valley.

The programme has also received unwavering support from First Lady Rachel Ruto, who has backed the initiative since its inception.

A champion of non-motorised transport and patron of the Mama Cycling initiative, the First Lady has regularly joined tree-planting exercises and community empowerment activities in Kaptagat.

Her involvement has reinforced the programme’s contribution to Kenya’s 15-billion-tree growing campaign, with the Kaptagat model increasingly recognised as a blueprint for linking sport, environmental restoration and sustainable livelihoods.

As the riders line up at the start line on Saturday, the challenge will once again demonstrate that every kilometre cycled is not only a race for victory, but also a step towards restoring one of Kenya’s most important forest ecosystems for future generations.

  • NACADA to partner with Kenya scouts to promote drug-free lifestyles among youth

NACADA to partner with Kenya scouts to promote drug-free lifestyles among youth

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting young people from alcohol and drug abuse by strengthening its partnership with the Kenya Scouts Association (KSA) during the 2026 Regional Inter-Patrol Competitions held at the Kenya Scouts Association Headquarters, Rowallan Scouts Camp in Nairobi County.

Representing the Authority, NACADA Board Chair addressed hundreds of Scouts, Scout leaders, patrons and government officials, underscoring the critical role that youth organizations such as the Kenya Scouts Association play in shaping responsible and resilient citizens.

Speaking during the event, the Board Chair said Scouting remains one of the country’s most effective platforms for instilling discipline, integrity, leadership and service among young people, values that significantly reduce vulnerability to alcohol and drug abuse.

“The Kenya Scouts Association has, for generations, nurtured disciplined, responsible and patriotic young people. These are the same values that protect our youth from the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse. Prevention begins by empowering young people with the right information, positive role models and opportunities to develop their full potential,” he said.

He noted that alcohol and drug abuse continues to threaten the health, education and future productivity of many young people, making preventive interventions more critical than ever.

The Board Chair challenged the Scouts to become ambassadors of prevention by making responsible choices and influencing their peers positively.

“Leadership begins with personal choices. Every decision you make today shapes the person you will become tomorrow. I encourage every Scout to choose purpose over peer pressure and become a champion for a drug-free Kenya,” he added.

During the competitions, NACADA officers engaged participants through preventive education sessions, interactive discussions and the distribution of information, education and communication materials aimed at enhancing awareness on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse.

The Authority also commended Scout leaders, teachers and parents for their continued mentorship, noting that strong family and community support remain among the most effective protective factors against substance use among adolescents.

The Regional Inter-Patrol Competitions bring together Scouts from across the country to showcase leadership, teamwork, discipline and practical skills while fostering patriotism and personal development.

NACADA reiterated its commitment to deepening collaboration with the Kenya Scouts Association and other youth-focused organizations to expand evidence-based prevention programmes that empower young people to make healthy, informed and responsible life choices.

The partnership forms part of NACADA’s broader strategy of leveraging established youth platforms to build resilient communities and advance the national agenda of preventing alcohol and drug abuse among children and young people.

Vivo Energy completes full acquisition of TotalEnergies Jordan

Vivo Energy, the leading African energy distribution company – which now operates around 4,200 service stations across 29 markets – has completed the acquisition of TotalEnergies Marketing Jordan, including its network of around 180 service stations, as well as its commercial fuels and lubricants operations.

In Kenya, Vivo Energy operates through its wholly owned subsidiary Vivo Energy Kenya, which was established in November 2012 following the acquisition of Shell’s downstream business in Kenya from Kenya Shell Ltd.

Vivo Energy Kenya is currently ranked as the leading national oil marketing company (OMC) with a 20.0% market share according to the sector regulator and serves all market segments from retail to commercial customers with a full range of automotive fuels, lubricants, aviation fuels, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and black fuels.

Further afield, in the Middle East, the acquisition of TotalEnergies Marketing Jordan marks the introduction of the Engen brand.

Now present in 13 of Vivo Energy’s markets, Engen is Vivo Energy’s owned retail brand with a strong reputation for quality and service – and the number one fuel brand in South Africa, where a network of over 1,000 Engen service stations sells one in every four litres of fuel. It will replace TotalEnergies on Jordan’s forecourts over the coming months.

Following the announcement of the transaction in November 2025, all parties worked hard to secure regulatory approvals and fulfilment of conditions precedent, which have now been completed.

Commenting on the transaction, Stan Mittelman, CEO of the Vivo Energy Group, said: “This is an important milestone for Vivo Energy as we expand beyond Africa into Jordan – a market with strong fundamentals and a team we have great respect for. Vivo Energy and our retail brand Engen are built on African values of customer service and community, which we believe have a real story to tell in Jordan. We look forward to supporting continued growth in the market.”

Adel Saadallah, the new Managing Director for Vivo Energy Jordan, added: “I am genuinely proud to be appointed to lead Vivo Energy’s business in Jordan, as we expand into this new market. I have been part of Vivo Energy since the company was founded and have seen first-hand how our model creates businesses that last.”

“The announcement is a change of ownership, but employees, dealer contracts and customer relationships carry over unchanged. My priority will be to work alongside the existing team, build on what is working well and make the transition as smooth as possible for everyone. We recognise that 2026 is a year of pride for Jordan: The Kingdom’s 80th Independence Day anniversary and the national team’s first-ever World Cup appearance. We will work to reflect this pride in our programmes – putting Jordan and Jordanians first,” Saadallah concluded.
