NCIC summons MP Farah Maalim over controversial Gen-Z remarks

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Daadab MP Farah Maalim after a viral video of him making inflammatory statements against young protesters surfaced.

In the video, the MP can be heard saying he would have massacred 5,000 Gen Z protesters for attempting to overthrow the government during the recent anti-tax protests.

The lawmaker is expected to appear before the Commission on Thursday at 11 AM at its offices in Nairobi.

According to the NCIC, the utterances are likely to incite feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence, or discrimination and affect harmonious coexistence between groups of different political affiliations in Kenya.

“Hon. Farah Maalim is required to appear before the Commission to assist with the ongoing investigations. Failure to appear in person at the designated place, date, and time is an offense as stipulated under Section 63 (c) read with Section 63 (e) of the NCI Act.”

Health Ministry to post 552 interns amid protests

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has announced that the Ministry will immediately post at least 552 medical interns as discussions continue within the government to secure additional resources.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the CS said that the Ministry plans to utilize funds allocated in the current financial year to gradually deploy interns.

“The court case notwithstanding, the parties agreed to continue pursuing a consensus position within 60 days that ended on Sunday 7th July 2024, as a means of unlocking the stalemate out of court,” stated Nakhumicha

“So far numerous meetings have been held with good progress made towards achieving consensus. Of note is that both parties agree on the need for the interns to be posted without further delay,” she added.

The CS also noted that the ministry is exploring several options, including deploying all medical interns at the recommended SRC stipend rate of Ksh70,000 per month, waiting for the court’s decision on September 26, and deploying interns in batches using funds allocated in the 2024/2025 financial year budget as per the CBA rates.

Nakhumicha noted that the recent 56-day doctors’ strike concluded with a Return-to-Work Formula agreement, which included proposals to resolve the impasse on deployment of 1,210 medical interns.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) had demanded a monthly salary of Ksh206,400 for interns, which the CS now deems unfeasible due to the withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024.

“As of today, there are a total of 3,760 interns awaiting deployment across various cadres, with a total budget of Ksh4.8 billion. Due to budget constraints, the Ministry received an allocation of Ksh3.7 billion for internships in the 2024/2025 financial year,” Nakhumicha explained.

Since January 2023, the Ministry has deployed 4,156 interns across six cadres, including 1,735 doctors (1,214 medical officers), 496 pharmacists, and 25 dentists, at a monthly rate of Ksh206,400.

Others include 874 nurses, 506 degree clinical officers, and 1,930 diploma clinical officers.

Dorcas Rigathi Foundation donates motorbike to man after successful rehabilitation

The Dorcas Rigathi Foundation (DRF) has donated a motorbike to a 25 year old man in Banana area, Kiambaa Constituency.

Wilson Kungu received the motorbike after successful rehabilitation from alcohol and drugs abuse under the community-based rehabilitation program implemented by Dorcas Rigathi Foundation (DRF) in partnership with a church in the area.

Kungu requested the motorbike on February 1, 2024 during a medical camp for screening against addictions in Kiambaa organized by Pastor Dorcas.

Fellow bodaboda riders joined in offloading the new motorbike that was delivered to their colleague.

“I will ply the Ruaka, Banana, Kawaida, and Kiambaa routes, and also become a member of the Rubis Bodaboda Sacco. I have been riding a rented bike, but I will now ride my own…I do not know what to say, I am so happy. Thank you Pastor Dorcas,” he said.

The beneficiary’s mother was also present said “I am grateful to Pastor Dorcas. Only God can repay her for the change she has caused in my son’s life, and thousands of men in our nation who would have been lost. I am her firm supporter. My son will now become independent and raise his family well.”

“Kungu is my last born. He was abusing alcohol, and weed, but look at the miracle God has brought in his life after he has reformed,”she added.

Among those transformed under the community-based rehabilitation program were Isaac Mwai, Peter Kanyoro, and Lawrence Karanja who are now recovering coaches reaching out to those in addiction in the constituency.

The recovering coaches have undergone the deaddiction program for more than one year, attending weekly meetings at the Hallelujah Gospel Church in the area.

Pastor Dorcas urged the clergy, from across faiths, to open up their places of worship for the transformation of those living in the streets and lost in different addictions.

  • Gladiator II trailer released ahead of premiere in November

Gladiator II trailer released ahead of premiere in November

Paramount Pictures has released the trailer for the sequel of the 2000 Oscar-winning movie ‘Gladiator’ starring Russel Crowe.

The historical drama feature will premiere in theatres on Nov. 22.

It stars Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Connie Nielson and is directed by Ridley Scott.

The 2000 epic ‘Gladiator, which also starred Joaquin Phoenix and collected five Oscars, including Best Picture.

Set several decades after the events of the first movie in ancient Rome, Gladiator II centres on Lucius (Mescal) — the grandson of former Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and now the grown-up son of Emperor Commodus — who resides with his family in Numidia.

After ending up in slavery following an invasion led by Roman general Marcus Acacius, Lucius follows the inspiration of Maximus (played by Crowe in the original Gladiator) and competes as a gladiator.

He becomes a gladiator, working for Macrinus, played by Denzel Washington, who sponsors fighters much like Oliver Reed’s Proximo did in the first film.

Lucius protects his birthright, saying he doesn’t know where he was born, adding: “I never knew a mother and or father.”

“You will be my instrument,” Macrinus responds.

It appears that the twin emperors now in place – played by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger – are also corrupt. We see them laugh demonically while gladiators die in their mock water battle (which did happen in real life).

Like the original, the film appears to be about the corruption of power, with worthy, embattled individuals taking on the might of Rome’s rulers.

Lucius favours “strength and honour”, while another Roman general, Marcus Acacius, played by The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal, says: “I will not waste another generation of young men for their vanity,” alongside footage of the emperors.

We don’t yet know enough about Pascal’s character to know where his morals fully lie.

The trailer ends with Mescal and Pascal battling in the arena, with the gladiator looking like he has the advantage, as he holds two swords crossed over the army general’s neck.
Scott directed ‘Gladiator II’ from a script by David Scarpa. Scott, Lucy Fisher, David Franzoni, Michael Pruss and Douglas Wick serve as producers.

  • Oilseeds yields challenges to persist as emerging economies continue driving agricultural markets, report indicates

Oilseeds yields challenges to persist as emerging economies continue driving agricultural markets, report indicates

Emerging economies have increasingly driven global agricultural market developments over the last 20 years and are projected to continue to do so over the next decade, but with regional shifts linked to changing demographics and new economic affluence.

This is according to a report released earlier this month by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2024-2033 is the key global reference for medium-term prospects for agricultural commodity markets, and this year’s edition marks the 20th edition of the joint publication.

For two decades, the report has analysed trends in the demographic and economic drivers of agricultural commodity supply and demand, projected the shifts in production and consumption locations, and assessed the resulting changes in international agricultural trade patterns.

A notable shift expected over the coming decade is the increasing role of India, Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa and the declining role played by China.

While China accounted for 28 percent of growth in global consumption of agriculture and fisheries in the previous decade, its share of additional demand over the coming decade is projected to fall to 11 percent, attributed not only to a declining population and slower income growth but also to a stabilisation of nutrition patterns.

India and Southeast Asian countries are projected to account for 31 percent of global consumption growth by 2033, driven by their growing urban population and increasing affluence. Among predominantly low-income regions, Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to contribute a sizeable share of additional global consumption (18 percent), primarily due to population growth-driven demand for food.

Total agricultural and fisheries consumption (as food, feed, fuel and other industrial raw materials) is projected to grow by 1.1 percent annually over the next decade, with nearly all of the additional consumption projected to occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Food calorie intake is expected to increase by 7 percent in middle-income countries, largely due to greater consumption of staples, livestock products and fats. Calorie intake in low-income countries will grow at 4 percent, too slowly to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal target of zero hunger by 2030.

“The Outlook confirms the need to implement strategies that bridge productivity gaps in low- and middle-income countries to increase domestic production and boost farmers’ incomes,” said FAO Director-General QU Dongyu.

Jason Momoa, Lisa Bonet divorce official

Jason Momoa, who gained global popularity by playing Khal Drogo in ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Aquaman’ in the DC Extended Universe, has officially dissolved his marriage to American actress Lisa Bonet.

Bonet, was a star of “The Cosby Show,” its spinoff “A Different World,” and the films “High Fidelity” and “Enemy of the State.”

A Los Angeles County judge’s dissolution of the marriage of the two actors, who had already been separated for years, took effect Tuesday, July 9.

Bonet and Momoa were married for more than seven years and were a couple for 12 years before they wed.

Bonet, whose legal name is Lilakoi Moon, filed for divorce in January. The documents listed the couple’s separation date as October 7, 2020, more than three years earlier. They made their separation public in 2002.

The divorce went as quickly as legally possible and came without dispute. Neither person will get financial support, they have agreed on how to split their assets, and they will have joint custody of their 16-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son.

It was the first marriage for Momoa, who has revealed on social media that he is dating “Hit Man” and “Father of the Bride” actor Adria Arjona.

It was the second marriage for Bonet, who was previously married to rocker Lenny Kravitz and has another daughter, actor Zoë Kravitz, with him.

  • Green Thinking Action Party youth list issues key to restoring public trust in gov’t

Green Thinking Action Party youth list issues key to restoring public trust in gov’t

Youth drawn from the Green Thinking Action Party (GTAP) have written to President William Ruto asking him to, among other things, conduct a comprehensive cabinet reshuffle and get rid of cabinet secretaries whom the public has lost faith in to regain trust with Gen Zs and Majority of Kenyans.

Besides changes in the cabinet, the group listed revision of controversial policies, implementation of advanced transparency mechanisms, initiation of genuine national dialogues, strengthening of judicial independence and institutional reforms, the launch of targeted economic reforms, the establishment of public accountability initiatives as well as promotion of cultural change within government as some of the issues that need urgent attention given the current state of affairs in the country

“In an era demanding unparalleled transparency and accountability, we, the youth of the Green Thinking Action Party (GTAP), present the Gen Z Accountability Checklist. Developed through extensive consultations among our peers who form the majority of our membership, this checklist embodies our collective vision for a fair and sustainable Kenya. It is a call to action for our government to realize the aspirations of its youth,” GTAP youth noted in their memo

Their checklist outlined issues that constitute direct responses to immediate concerns. They include confirmation of cancellation of proposed tax increases on essential goods and services, reduction of salaries of high-earning government officials by 20%, and elimination of non-essential government positions.

They also want a reduction of wasteful government spending. To do this, they asked the government to publish a comprehensive annual report on government expenditures, enforce a policy to limit official travel and hospitality expenses, and implement budget cuts to reduce non-essential government spending by 30%.

They also called for an increased allocation for public healthcare and education by at least 15%, reinstatement and expansion of the national school feeding program, and the recruitment of an additional 10,000 teachers and healthcare professionals.

And that’s not all, the group is advising the government to embrace transparent and timely communication. It says this can be achieved through the establishment of a government accountability office, and implementation of a public progress tracking system for all government projects.

They also recommend monthly public Q&A sessions with key government officials, a formula to track promises made as well as regular publication of independent audit reports on government spending.
