  • KFS bans shamba system in Kinangop, sparking farmer uproar

KFS bans shamba system in Kinangop, sparking farmer uproar

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has banned the ‘Shamba system’ in parts of Kinangop, Nyandarua County, causing an uproar among hundreds of small-scale farmers.

The government institution has given the farmers 14 days to cease farming activities in parts of the Aberdare forest, putting them in a difficult situation.

The farmers are requesting a six-month extension to harvest their crops, warning that the directive could undermine the progress made in forest conservation in this agriculturally rich region.

For years, they have cultivated land around the forest while planting seedlings, which has gradually increased forest cover.

Joseph Mwaura from Rwanyambo village stated that the shamba system had been beneficial for both the community and KFS.

He expressed shock at the directive, highlighting the significant financial investment farmers had made.

“This government promised to support low-wage earners, but this decision is oppressive despite our contributions to forest conservation and food security,” Mwaura said.

He cautioned that those affected might resort to illegal logging, undoing years of conservation efforts.

Hannah Mwaniki reported that they had recently planted hundreds of tree seedlings and assorted crops, only to be ordered out. She called for a six-month extension, noting that the shamba system was crucial for many families.

“We urge the Kenya Forest Service to allow us just six months to harvest our crops; otherwise, we will face substantial losses,” she said.

Samuel Ndung’u echoed these sentiments, stating that their farming activities were conducted legally and in partnership with KFS for conservation efforts.

“We have been farming in the forest while planting trees for years and are now perplexed by the government’s abrupt decision,” he said.

A senior KFS officer, who requested anonymity, confirmed the ban, stating that it was due to some farmers illegally harvesting forest products.

“We have learned that some farmers are using the shamba system as a cover for illegal activities such as logging, hence the ban,” the officer explained.

Veteran Journalist Macharia Gaitho was arrested Wednesday morning and released shortly after.

Authorities indicated his prompt release happened since he was not the person the police were looking for.

The police headquarters reiterated that as a service, “we do not target journalists in any way,”

NPS has termed today’s incident as “highly regrettable,” after questions were raised as to why Gaitho was picked up while inside a police station where he had driven.

Reports of the arrest of Gaitho spread quickly when a video clip showing him being bundled into a car at Karen Police Station was shared on social media. He was with his son at the time of his arrest.

The former National Media Group Managing Editor was brought back to the same station where he was arrested and was expected to record a statement over the incident.

‘Anguka Nayo’ goes to Hollywood as celebrities offer support to Kenya

Kenyan press officer and Former Miss Universe contestant Rachel Mbuki challenged a few celebrities to do the “Anguka Nayo” challenge while doing vox pops at NBC’s Universal summer press tour.

Posting a video of herself doing the challenge on the carpet, Ms Mbuki later challenged celebrities like country star Reba McEntire and Shameless star Shanola Hampton to do the same.

Although some of them didn’t quite get the pronunciation right, they still managed to offer their support to Kenyans.

Prime minister compares attack on Trump to situation in Slovakia

Slovak politicians have condemned the assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania.

Taking to social media, Prime Minister and Smer chair Robert Fico used the event to criticise the media and opposition, comparing it to the situation in Slovakia.

“If the attacker against Trump had known Slovak, the former would only have needed to read Denník N, Sme or Aktuality to get the impression of ‘dealing with’ the unruly former US president. It’s the same thing,” he wrote in his Facebook post

“And now we will see urges to reconcile, calm down, and forgive.”

PM Fico himself is the victim of a failed assassination attempt that occurred on May 15 during an out-of-home government session in Handlová, western Slovakia. He has been slowly returning to work since July.

President Peter Pellegrini also condemned the attack, saying that he is deeply concerned about the rise of violence in politics around the world. Christian Democratic Movement chair Milan Majerský echoed the sentiment.

Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry headed by Juraj Blanár condemned the attack as well.

“No one, neither PM Robert Fico nor former US President Donald Trump, deserves to be shot at because of their political actions and opinions,” stated Progressive Slovakia chair Michal Šimečka, adding that violent incidents must not be a pretext for exploiting power or for fighting against the basic values of democracy.

Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok said that “Democracy means that political decisions are made by people in the polling booths, not with guns on the streets.”

Other politicians who condemned the attack include Deputy Speaker of Parliament Peter Žiga, SaS chair Branislav Gröhling, Za Ľudí chair Veronika Remišová.
