Kenya appeals to Vietnam for stay of execution of Margaret Nduta

Kenya has officially appealed to the Vietnamese government to halt the impending execution of Margaret Nduta, a Kenyan national facing capital punishment in the Southeast Asian country.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei revealed in a statement on his X page that he held a telephone conversation with Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Nguyen Minh Hang, on Sunday regarding the matter.

During the conversation, Sing’oei conveyed the anxiety of the Kenyan people over Nduta’s fate and reiterated Kenya’s formal request for a stay of execution.

He emphasized the need for both nations to explore a diplomatic resolution to the issue.

“I am grateful for Madam Hang’s assurance that our petition is under consideration by her country’s authorities. In the meantime, our mission in Bangkok is actively following up the case in situ,” Sing’oei stated.

Vietnam is known for its strict drug-related laws, and it remains unclear whether Kenyan diplomatic efforts will influence the final decision.

The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing all available avenues to save Nduta from execution, with further engagements expected in the coming days.

  • Mudavadi’s Prime CS role secure despite ANC-UDA merger, OPCS confirms

Mudavadi’s Prime CS role secure despite ANC-UDA merger, OPCS confirms

The Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary (OPCS) has affirmed that Musalia Mudavadi’s position as Prime Cabinet Secretary remains secure and is in line with the pre-2022 General Election agreement signed by Kenya Kwanza coalition affiliate parties.

In a statement issued on Saturday, OPCS clarified that the recent merger between the Amani National Congress (ANC) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) does not affect Mudavadi’s role in government.

“The merger of ANC with UDA has solidified the position of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, ensuring that all terms of the pre-2022 General Election agreement remain valid and binding until 2027,” the statement read.

The clarification comes amid growing speculation linking Mudavadi’s former position as ANC party leader to the ongoing political realignments within the government.

OPCS reiterated that Kenya Kwanza leaders remain committed to the coalition’s original mandate, despite the recent signing of a cooperation agreement between UDA, Kenya Kwanza, and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

“Kenya Kwanza remains intact, strong, and fully dedicated to delivering on its promises to the people of Kenya,” the statement added.

The OPCS press service also acknowledged stakeholders, particularly former ANC supporters, for their role in facilitating the transition, terming the merger a bold step toward strengthening Kenya Kwanza’s governance agenda.

“This milestone would not have been possible without your unwavering trust and commitment,” it noted, emphasizing the coalition’s renewed focus on unity, efficiency, and a shared vision for Kenya’s future.

The statement further assured that with the merger now formalized, Kenya Kwanza remains focused on delivering on its electoral promises while maintaining political stability ahead of the 2027 elections.

A week ago, while speaking in Malava, Mudavadi emphasized the need for leaders to work together to build a united, secure, and prosperous nation.

He reiterated his support for the framework agreement between Kenya Kwanza and ODM, describing it as a necessary step toward resolving Kenya’s social, economic, and political challenges.

Mudavadi has often revisited his “ANC Earthquake” moment of January 23, 2022, describing it as one of the toughest decisions he had to make. However, he maintains that it was a strategic move to disrupt Kenya’s political landscape.

“On January 23, 2022, I made the famous ‘Tusidanganyane’ speech, referring to it as an earthquake. I have since been vindicated, and we changed Kenya’s politics forever. I always take a long-term view of my decisions,” he said last week in Malava.

Mudavadi added that the ANC-UDA merger was a calculated move to ensure the party’s relevance and influence in national politics, warning that any delay could have seen ANC sidelined.

“Sisi watu wa ANC tukichelewa, tungeshangaa. Ndiyo maana nikaweka mkataba kwamba ANC ina-merge na UDA, tuwe chama kimoja. Sasa tunakaa upande wa UDA tukinegosiate,” he stated.

Following the merger, several former ANC officials have been integrated into UDA’s leadership. Lamu Governor Issa Timamy has been appointed UDA’s Deputy Party Leader, while former ANC National Chair Kelvin Lunani now serves as the party’s Vice Chair.

Former ANC Secretary-General Omboko Milemba has been named Deputy Secretary-General.

    Other appointments include:

    • Advocate Ferrah Etyang, former ANC Elections Board Secretary, who was sworn in as a UDA National Elections Board member.
    • Kennedy Omulo Junior, who now serves as UDA’s Director of Devolution and County Affairs.
    • Nathaniel Mongare, appointed Director of Political Affairs, Resource Mobilization, and Diaspora Affairs.
    • Margaret Ndanyi, who now serves as UDA’s Director of Women, Voter Education, and Training.

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties has officially gazetted ANC’s dissolution, marking the end of its decade-long existence.

A Gazette Notice dated March 7, 2025, confirmed that the party voluntarily dissolved following a Special National Delegates Congress held on February 7, 2025.

“Under Sections 9 and 34C of the Political Parties Act, and Paragraph 22 of the Second Schedule, it is notified for the information of the general public that ANC, at its Special National Delegates Congress of February 7, 2025, resolved to voluntarily dissolve in line with the ANC Party Constitution,” read the notice in part.

With ANC officially absorbed into UDA, Kenya Kwanza leaders have assured their supporters that the coalition remains committed to its vision of national transformation ahead of the next electoral cycle.

  • Zimmerman OCS sentenced to jail for corruption

Zimmerman OCS sentenced to jail for corruption

The Officer-in-Charge of the Zimmerman Police Post in Kasarani Division, who was facing corruption charges, has been sentenced to two consecutive one-year jail terms or pay a cumulative fine of Ksh 650,000.

Appearing before Isabella Baraza at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Friday, Police Inspector Susan Wambui Muiruri was found guilty and sentenced to a fine of Ksh 300,000 in count one or a one-year jail term in default.

She received a similar sentence for count two, alongside a mandatory fine of Ksh 50,000.

The case revolved around allegations that Muiruri illegally detained suspects at the police post.

Investigations established that she solicited a bribe of Ksh 10,000 to facilitate negotiations between a complainant and a suspect.

The complainant was further forced to pay Ksh 150,000 without justifiable cause.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has reiterated its call for public officials to uphold integrity, emphasizing that they serve in trust for the people.

The commission continues to warn against corrupt practices such as bribery, which undermine governance and hinder national progress.

Corruption, whether minor or large-scale, has far-reaching consequences, including a higher cost of living, a weakened rule of law, deteriorating infrastructure, increased unemployment and delayed or denied justice.

The conviction of Muiruri serves as a reminder that those engaged in graft will face the full force of the law.

  • Fraudsters busted after vanishing with Ksh 1.1M in fake car deal

Fraudsters busted after vanishing with Ksh 1.1M in fake car deal

Two fraudsters accused of conning a Kenyan out of Ksh 1.1 million in a sham vehicle importation scheme have been arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kilimani.

The suspects, Yunus Hamza Hussein and Brian Omweri, were nabbed after an intensive forensic investigation linked them to a fraudulent deal dating back to May 27, 2022.

Hussein, posing as a legitimate salesperson at Rana Motors along Ngong Road, lured the victim with a too-good-to-be-true offer of delivering two vehicles, a Probox Extra and a 14-seater Toyota Hiace 7L, for Ksh 2.9 million.

Convinced by the elaborate deception, the victim paid a deposit of Ksh 1.1 million, only for Hussein to disappear without a trace.

Detectives tracking the fraudster’s digital footprint traced Hussein to Crystal Apartments in Athi River, where he was arrested and several SIM cards recovered.

His arrest led to the capture of his accomplice Omweri in Makongeni, Thika.

A SIM card linked to a Ksh 550,000 transaction from the victim was recovered, further cementing their role in the con.

The suspects are currently in police custody as authorities finalize investigations before presenting them in court.

Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent vehicle importation deals and to verify sellers before making transactions.

  • Gov’t to launch textile and apparel training in 15 TVET institutions

Gov’t to launch textile and apparel training in 15 TVET institutions

The government is set to launch a textile and apparel skills enhancement program in 15 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across the country to address youth unemployment.

Principal Secretary for the State Department for TVET, Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria, announced that the program aims to reduce TVET wastage rates by equipping youth with specific skills and key competencies within the shortest time possible.

To achieve this, the department is restructuring curricula into micro-credentials, allowing trainees to gain specialized skills and graduate quickly, enabling them to secure employment or venture into entrepreneurship.

Speaking during a consultative forum with principals from the selected 15 TVET institutions, Dr. Muoria said the program will be piloted at:

    • Tetu Technical and Vocational College
    • Kenya Coast National Polytechnic
    • Kisii National Polytechnic
    • Belgut Technical Training Institute
    • Rift Valley National Polytechnic
    • Sigalagala National Polytechnic
    • Kibra TVC
    • Nkabune TTI
    • Nyeri National Polytechnic
    • Maasai National Polytechnic
    • Kisumu National Polytechnic
    • Nairobi National Polytechnic
    • Tharaka TVC
    • Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf

Dr. Muoria noted that despite numerous job opportunities in the textile and apparel industry, a significant skills gap persists.

To bridge this gap, the State Department for TVET is partnering with Sainath Education Institute to train youth in fashion and design, ensuring they are well-prepared for available jobs in the sector.

She emphasized that the initiative is designed to provide a highly skilled workforce for textile and apparel companies, including those in Export Processing Zones (EPZs) and Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

Additionally, the program will upskill TVET trainers in fashion and design and expose them to modern, state-of-the-art equipment.

Implementation of the textile and apparel skills enhancement program is set to begin at the end of March in Nairobi and Mombasa before expanding to other regions.

Dr. Muoria further stated that the State Department for TVET is refining the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) curriculum by integrating core competency units that can be completed within six to eight months, enhancing employability for graduates.

  • KRA launches new trade hubs to streamline Kenya-South Sudan commerce

KRA launches new trade hubs to streamline Kenya-South Sudan commerce

Kenya’s trade with South Sudan is set for a major transformation following the launch of three Trade Facilitation Centres in Kainuk, Lodwar, and Kakuma.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has established these strategic hubs to enhance efficiency along the Northern Corridor, a vital trade route linking Kenya to South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda.

The initiative, which falls under the broader LAPSSET Corridor Program, aims to ease congestion at the Malaba and Busia border posts, reduce transit time for cargo moving from Mombasa to South Sudan and solidify Kenya’s position as a regional trade hub.

Additionally, it will unlock economic opportunities in Turkana County, a region historically marginalized in national trade infrastructure.

Speaking at the launch, KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga described the initiative as a game-changer for East African trade.

He noted that the facilities will improve the movement of goods across the region while strengthening KRA’s presence along the South Sudan link road.

By bringing services closer to traders, the centres will not only facilitate business but also enhance border security and trade compliance.

Beyond trade facilitation, the centres will serve as enforcement hubs, hosting KRA’s Rapid Response Unit and Enforcement teams.

Their presence is expected to curb long-standing issues such as cargo theft, smuggling, and tax evasion, which have negatively impacted Kenya’s trade ecosystem.

KRA’s Commissioner for Customs and Border Control, Dr. Lilian Nyawanda, emphasized that the centres will bridge logistical gaps and create a more conducive business environment.

She noted that the facilities will streamline the flow of cargo into South Sudan while offering trade-related services to local communities.

By positioning them in Turkana, KRA is leveraging its strategic location as a gateway to South Sudan, ensuring that trade is conducted legitimately while preventing illicit activities.

For years, traders along the Northern Corridor have struggled with bureaucratic inefficiencies and high costs associated with accessing customs services.

The new centres address these challenges by reducing the distance traders must travel to obtain trade documentation, cutting costs for both businesses and KRA.

Additionally, the facilities will help combat the smuggling of counterfeit goods and tax evasion through porous borders.

Previously, enforcement teams had to be dispatched from Eldoret to conduct inspections along the corridor. With these centres now operational, monitoring and compliance enforcement will be more immediate and cost-effective.

The Trade Facilitation Centres are part of the Eastern Africa Regional Transport, Trade, and Development Facilitation Project (EARTTDFP), funded by the World Bank.

As Kenya continues to position itself as a leading trade hub in the region, KRA plans to establish additional border posts along key trade routes to enhance revenue collection, improve security and promote regional economic integration.

By investing in such infrastructure, Kenya is securing its trade corridors and strengthening economic ties with its neighbors, ensuring that trade remains a key driver of economic growth and regional stability.
