President Ruto pledges support to Rhino Charge organizers

President William Ruto has assured the organizers of the annual Rhino Charge challenge of the government’s support for their efforts toward environmental conservation.

The Head of state made the remarks as the curtains came down on this year’s Rhino charge challenge at Nkoteyia Community Conservancy in Samburu County.

President Ruto hailed the organizers for their commitment to environmental conservation over the years.

“I am very grateful to be here with you this morning. Congratulations to the organisers. Your partnership in fencing off some of the assets around the water towers is something we are eternally grateful. What you have done in Mount Kenya…what you are doing in the Aberdares…what you are about to start in Kakamega and shortly, we will be working with you in fencing the Mau so that we can preserve this asset for the current generation and the one to come,” the President said.

This year’s Rhino charge challenge raised 173 Million shillings.

President Ruto further promised that the government will work the Rhino Ark, organisers of the Rhino Charge, to ensure that their conservation efforts are sustained.

“I want to agree with you that what you have done, the government is going to match it shilling for shilling because of the tremendous contribution you are making to matters environment and matters that would usually be the responsibility of the government of Kenya. I want to thank the Rhino Ark Conservation Trust and assure you of my partnership and that of the government,” President Ruto said.

The overall 2023 Rhino Charge challenge winner was Mark Glen in Car No. 48. Sean Avery in Car No 38 and Graham McKittrick driving Car No. 5 came in second and third respectively.

Glen was ecstatic following his win saying: “It was absolutely amazing, this is our sixth title and have equalled the guy who had won it the most. So, next year, we are going to come back and try to win a seventh title. It was an absolutely amazing course…the hills were rather radical out there,” Glen said.

The Modified Class Category was claimed by Car No. 60 entered by Ajitesh Kapoor whereas the unmodified category was claimed by Car No. 9 driven by John Bowden.

The highest fundraiser was Adil Khawaja of Car No. 44 with Ksh 60 million up from KSh 21.7 million in last year’s action. Peter Kinyua’s Car No. 23 and Tim Carstens’ Car No 63 were the second and third-highest fundraiser respectively.

One of the primary objectives of the Rhino Charge Challenge is to generate funds for environment conservation initiatives. This year’s Rhino Charge Challenge attracted 52 cars.

Leipzig’s win means Bayer Leverkusen, who finished sixth in the league, qualify for the Europa League again after reaching the semifinals this season.

  • Messi and Ramos sign off with PSG defeat

Messi and Ramos sign off with PSG defeat

Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos played their final games for Paris St-Germain as the Ligue 1 champions lost to mid-table Clermont on the final day.

Defender Ramos headed in an opener from Vitinha’s cross and Kylian Mbappe’s penalty gave PSG a 2-0 lead.

Clermont battled back and Johan Gastien slid in after Marco Verratti’s error.

Mehdi Zeffane equalised and Grejohn Kyei, who had a goal disallowed by the video assistant referee and missed a penalty, bundled in the winner.

Former Barcelona forward Messi, whose name was booed by some fans before kick-off, missed several chances to add to his 32 goals in 75 games for the club. Like ex-Real Madrid defender Ramos, he is out of contract and leaving the club this summer.

Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal and Major League Soccer side Inter Miami are two possible  destinations Argentine Messi.

PSG players all wore Sergio Rico’s name on the back of their shirts, as well as their own squad number.

Paris St-Germain goalkeeper Rico is in hospital in his native Spain after a horse riding accident the day after they clinched the title  last weekend. Fans displayed banners for him before kick-off and during an applause in the 16th minute – his squad number.

Mbappe’s goal against Clermont helped him win a fifth consecutive Ligue 1 Golden Boot. He is only the fourth player to finish top scorer in France five times, level with the record of Carlos Bianchi, Delio Onnis and Jean-Pierre Papin.

The France striker finished on 29 goals, two clear of Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette, who did not score in his side’s 3-1 loss at Nice.

  • USM Alger crowned CAF Confederations Cup champions

USM Alger crowned CAF Confederations Cup champions

USM Alger of Algeria was crowned the new CAF Confederations Cup winners despite 0-1 loss to Young Africans,Yanga, at Stade Du Juillet,Algiers.

Despite of the defeat 1-0, USM Alger’s 2-2 aggregate score, courtesy of their 2-1 first-leg victory in Dar es Salaam, secured them the coveted trophy.

Although the loss may have dampened the celebration, it couldn’t diminish the euphoria of becoming the first Algerian side to win the CAF Confederation Cup.

Yanga, appearing in their maiden continental final, came tantalizingly close to their own momentous achievement after Djuma Shabani’s first-half penalty.

However, they were unable to find a crucial second goal to swing the tie in their favor and claim the crown on enemy territory.

USM Alger’s captain Zineddine Belaid had a second-half penalty saved, but his disappointment was forgotten as the Algerian side held on to a 1-0 defeat at the final whistle, securing their place in history.

Yanga faced a daunting task, needing to win by a margin of more than two goals. They got off to a perfect start when they were awarded a penalty just seven minutes into the match after Saadi Radouani’s challenge on Kennedy Musonda.

Shabani confidently converted the spot-kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and giving Yanga an early lead.

The early goal was precisely what the Tanzanian side needed to fuel their pursuit of victory, and they continued to apply pressure on USM Alger.

In the 30th minute, Alger came agonizingly close to equalizing when Aimen Mahious rose to meet a cross from Khaled Bousseliou, but his header narrowly missed the target.

Yanga’s Fiston Mayele, who was tightly marked, had a glimpse at goal when he expertly controlled a lofted pass from Musonda, but he failed to find the target with his subsequent touch.

After the break, USM Alger came out with greater intensity, pressing Yanga high up the pitch.

They were handed a golden opportunity to level the scoreline in the 59th minute when Tumisang Orebonye was brought down inside the area by Ibrahim Hamad.

However, Yanga’s goalkeeper Djigui Diarra produced a brilliant double save, denying Belaid’s penalty before recovering swiftly to block Abderrahmane Meziane’s rebound effort.

The save injected new life into Yanga’s pursuit, and they continued their quest for a second goal.

In the 71st minute, Dickson Job attempted a long-range strike, but it was deflected, taking the sting out of the shot as the goalkeeper gathered comfortably.

Alger defended resolutely, denying Yanga clear opportunities inside their box.

In the dying minutes of the match, Mayele, who had been closely marked throughout the game, tried his luck with a long-range effort, but it sailed over the crossbar.

With six minutes of added time, Yanga threw everything forward in search of the crucial second goal.

However, USM Alger stood firm, preserving their rear guard to ensure the trophy stayed in the Algerian capital.

Siaya County Government pledges support to Nyamira girls ahead of East Africa school games

The county government of Siaya will kit Nyamira girls’ high school during the forthcoming East Africa secondary school games slated for Rwanda, governor James Orengo has said.

Orengo said that on top of providing the girls with uniforms, his office was also exploring the possibility of providing the team with new hockey sticks and other kits so that they could give their best during the games.

He was speaking in his office when the school’s Hockey Team, led by school principal; Jessica Ambasa paid a courtesy call on him to present him with the trophy it won during the national championships in Nakuru, hence earning a ticket to the regional games.

The governor said that he will send a team of sports officials to improve the school’s hockey pitch to the required standards.

He urged the girls to give their best and take sports seriously, adding that sports had become one of the best sources of wealth globally.

Sports is an industry and can create wealth. In the developed countries, some of the richest people are sportsmen and women” said the governor adding that it takes practice, commitment and passion for one to excel.

Orengo also challenged the girls to also give their best in academics, adding that the country equally needs skilled and educated workforce to develop.

On the request for support to have the school’s hockey coaches facilitated to travel to Rwanda. The governor said he will mobilize well-wishers to team up with his government to have the trainers accompany the team.

A team without caches is not a team” he said and promised to join the girls in Rwanda should they sail to the finals.

Nyamira girls’ high school hockey team captain, Vivian Akinyi promised the governor and the country that they will bring home the trophy.Nyamira Girls from Bondo won the national title for the first time in 30 years.

  • Gundogan double secures Mancity FA Cup

Gundogan double secures Mancity FA Cup

Manchester City remain on course for the Treble after Ilkay Gundogan scored twice to give them 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Having already won the Premier League title, City now go into next Saturday’s Champions League final against Inter Milan in Istanbul with the opportunity to emulate United’s feat of 1999.

And City captain Gundogan was the big game match-winner again, assuring his place in history with the quickest goal in FA Cup final history, a stunning volley after only 12 seconds eclipsing Louis Saha’s strike for Everton after 25 seconds against Chelsea in 2009.

Manchester United equalised after 33 minutes when the video assistant referee ruled that Jack Grealish had handled, Bruno Fernandes coolly sending Stefan Ortega the wrong way from the spot.

It was Gundogan, as he does so often, who made the decisive contribution when he volleyed Kevin de Bruyne’s free-kick past United keeper David de Gea six minutes after the break to give City the FA Cup for the seventh time.

Manchester City stand just 90 minutes away from the greatest season in their history.

With the league and FA Cup secured, next comes the chance to claim that elusive Champions League against Inter Milan.

Should they succeed, they would become only the second English club to complete the Treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

United, who did it 24 years ago, did their best to halt City’s bid, but the league champions had too much power – and in Gundogan, they had a player who revels in the pressure of the big occasion.

His two goals, including that stunning early opener, emphasised what a figure of significance he has become, assuring him of a special place when the story of City’s glory years is written.

And in John Stones, City have a player of the highest class in his latest role defined by Guardiola, one which allows him to advance into midfield and utilise all his composure and quality.

Istanbul and Inter Milan are next on City’s agenda and in their current relentless, irresistible mood, it would be more of a surprise if they did not complete the Treble than if they did.

  • WRC Safari Rally: Nikhil ready to rev his hand controlled Evo X marque

WRC Safari Rally: Nikhil ready to rev his hand controlled Evo X marque

The creation of the FIA’s Disability and Accessibility Commission has changed what it means to be a disabled person in motorsport!

And this satisfactorily informs the reason why Kenya’s number one paraplegic driver Nikhil Sachania continues to scale the heights of racing with zest and vigor.

Nikhil, who is signed up for the June 22-25 WRC Safari Rally Kenya, is grateful for the support he has received from KCB Bank and FIA’s Disability and Accessibility Commission:

The FIA grant was given to me in 2020, which included the fuel tank, fire suppression kit and overalls and I am still using them.”

The fuel tank is a certified FIA tank and has been a very big boost for my Safari aspirations from 2021 when I first participated in a WRC event. It is great to have the FIA support and promote disabled drivers across the globe,” added Nikhil.

The second generation driver, son of Dinesh Sachania, returns to “fesh fesh” racing world of Naivasha behind the wheel of a modified, hand-controlled Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X marque.

    –Three-Car Outfit–

Together with his able-bodied partner Deep Patel, the duo will represent a star-studded three-car KCB Bank Racing outfit alongside current Kenya Champions Karan Patel/Tauseef Khan(Ford Fiesta Rally 2) and Evans Kavisi/Absalom Aswani (Mitsubishi Lancer EvoX).

KCB supported our racing campaign on the 2022 Safari and part of the drive in the 2022 KNRC season. It is great to have their support again in 2023. Now we are able to procure quality spare parts, tyres- and indeed- savor the incredible exposure of gracing the fabled event.”

“Safari preparations have run meticulously well. Our technical team have stripped the car and are rebuilding it after our participation in Nakuru. My aim this year is to at least return the EVO back in the top 15,” Nikhil continued.

“The 2022 Safari was rough and tough, but we enjoyed every bit of it; posting a strong position in the National Category (4th) despite the gremlins we had to contend with on the last stage,” added Nikhil.

    Hand Controls

Nikhil’s incredible racing story has inspired countless other youths to embrace Eliud Kipchoge’s popular notion that “no man is limited in sport”.

After a quad practice accident at the age of 22, Nikhil’s life and outlook changed forever, but his uncanny knack for desirable limits sport never ceased.

His first race car (a Mitsubishi Challenger 3ltr V6) was acquired locally and built by his first co-driver Charan Singh.

“All my cars including the Fiat are hand-controlled. The operation is a simple push and pull lever mechanism- pull to accelerate and push to brake.”

In September 2011, Nikhil was involved in an accident in Athi River where he was testing his new quad bike with Shazar Anwar and Zane Young trying to get ready for his would-be first National event.

He hit a rock at high-speed and landed headfirst. The impact shattered his spine. But guess what? Nikhil’s deeply ingrained racing convictions will always bring him back to the bucket seat of his hand-controlled cars time and time again!
