AU mission condemns al-Shabab attack on Mogadishu base

The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) on Sunday condemned a mortar attack on its base camp in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, vowing to step up stabilization efforts in the country.

AUSSOM confirmed that al-Shabab militants launched an attack on the heavily fortified Halane base at approximately 6:05 a.m. local time on Sunday. Fortunately, there were no casualties or property damage.

The incident occurred just a day after al-Shabab militants carried out a separate mortar attack targeting the Bondhere and Warta Nabada districts of Mogadishu, which left at least six civilians injured.

AUSSOM reiterated that such attacks will not deter its commitment to supporting the Somali government in combating terrorism and pursuing long-term peace and security in the country.

Located within the Aden Adde International Airport complex, the Halane base houses AUSSOM headquarters, as well as offices of the United Nations and other international organizations dedicated to serving the people of Somalia.

Although al-Shabab militants were driven out of Mogadishu in 2011, the group remains capable of carrying out attacks, targeting government facilities, hotels, restaurants, and public areas.
