Anticipation builds in Turkana as community awaits President Ruto’s visit to Todonyang’

A heightened sense of anticipation has gripped Turkana County following confirmation that President William Ruto is scheduled to visit Todonyang’, a volatile border area in Turkana North.

The announcement was made by Turkana County Woman Representative, Cecilia Ngitit Asinyen, during the burial ceremony of the late Mama Veronica Loitoi Ejore at Rukruk village in Lowarengak.

The visit, Asinyen revealed, was one of the key outcomes of a recent meeting between Turkana leaders and the President at State House, Nairobi.

During the meeting, leaders briefed the president on the security crisis in Todonyang’, where a recent attack left several local fishermen dead, reportedly at the hands of armed militia from neighbouring Ethiopia.

“The president gave his assurance that he will personally visit Todonyang’. Already, funds have been released for the upgrading of local facilities in preparation for his arrival,” said Asinyen.

She underscored that the visit signifies the national government’s commitment to addressing persistent security challenges and promoting peace along the Kenya–Ethiopia border.

According to Asinyen, the president’s presence will not only serve as a symbol of solidarity with the affected communities but will also reinforce ongoing peace efforts aimed at fostering harmonious coexistence between the Turkana and the Merrille communities, who jointly rely on Lake Turkana for fishing and related livelihoods.

She further called for decisive action concerning Ethiopian nationals allegedly residing within Kenyan territory, specifically in Lopeimukat and Natiira.

“We must be clear that these areas lie within Kenya. As we pursue lasting peace, it is imperative that these individuals are relocated,” she stated firmly.

The Woman Representative expressed confidence that the president’s visit will catalyse efforts by both national and county governments to restore security, resolve longstanding territorial disputes, and place Todonyang’ on a path towards socio-economic transformation.

CS Murkomen visits Turkana after attack by Ethiopian militia

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is currently in Todonyang along the Kenya-Ethiopia border to assess the security situation following Saturday’s cross-border incident between Kenyan citizens and Dassanech community members of Ethiopia.

The heavily armed militia from the Dassanech tribe in Ethiopia raided areas along the Kenya-Ethiopia border near the Omo River, spraying bullets indiscriminately at victims fishing during the attack that has since heightened tensions along the border between the two countries.

The government confirmed the attack but did not disclose the number of fatalities, despite reports suggesting that 20 fishermen had been killed.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo cautioned and discouraged the spread of unverified information, emphasizing that security concerns should not be sensationalized.

“This incident took place on the Ethiopian side of the border, and our security teams including the Regional Commissioner, County Commissioner, and County Intelligence team are actively working to establish full details,” the PS stated.

Adding that: “We will be able to share with the country the exact details of that, and what I will do as a PS, for now is to urge caution so that then we don’t sensationalize this issue because matters security are very serious and we cannot sensationalize for whatever reason.”

Earlier Sunday, the National Police Service (NPS) also issued a statement regarding the situation noting that they had launched investigations.

The statement from the Office of the Inspector-General noted that the Turkana County Security team, in collaboration with Ethiopian security authorities, are on the ground verifying reports of the incident and working to establish the cause of the conflict.

NPS said it was working to establish the cause of the conflict to take the necessary action in accordance with the law.
