Iran condemns alleged Israeli drone attack on Gaza-bound aid ship

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Saturday condemned a drone attack, allegedly carried out by Israel, on a ship carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

He referred to an incident reported by the international non-governmental organization Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which said its Gaza aid ship “Conscience” was bombed by drones in international waters off the coast of Malta early on Friday, blaming the strike on Israel.

In a statement released by his ministry, Baghaei said the attack on the ship was carried out in line with Israel’s plan against the Palestinians and to ensure the continuation of the Gaza aid blockade, calling it “a clear crime against Palestinians and a terrorist action against maritime security and safety.”

He stressed that depriving Gaza residents, particularly children, women, and the wounded, of food, water, and medicines was considered “a clear instance of war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

Baghaei also described the United States and other supporters of Israel as accomplices in “these crimes,” voicing Iran’s solidarity with the “oppressed” Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

On Friday, Malta’s government confirmed that maritime authorities had received a distress call from a vessel outside the country’s territorial waters and offered immediate assistance. Local media said the vessel’s crew members were rescued, with no injuries reported. The media reports noted that an Israeli military aircraft hovered around Malta hours before the vessel was attacked.

Israel has not officially commented on the incident or related reports so far.

MV Uhuru II to boost cargo shipments through L. Victoria

Transport around Lake Victoria has gotten a major boost following the launch of Kenya’s second vessel MV Uhuru II.

The new vessel which was handed over to the Kenya Railways Corporation today by the Kenya Shipyards Limited has the capacity to ferry up to 22 loaded wagons equivalent to 1800 metric tons of cargo.

The vessel is expected to help Kenya increase fuel shipments to Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.

For instance, Uganda and the Northern frontier of the East African region consume an estimated 1.5 billion litres of oil every year.

Kenya is targeting to capitalize on this development to grow its maritime sector through freight services.

The handover of the vessel marks a deliberate strategy by the government to leverage the country’s emerging shipbuilding industry for economic growth.

The new vessel will help Kenya make at least three trips to the neighbouring countries every week.

Both MV Uhuru I and MV Uhuru II have a combined capacity of over 3000 metric tons which the country seeks to leverage in its long-term strategy to shift focus away from road transport.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya urged state agencies and devolved units to maximize the expertise of the Kenya Shipyard Limited to grow the country’s emerging shipbuilding industry and in turn spur the country’s economic growth.

MV Uhuru II is Kenya’s first locally assembled vessel giving the nascent ship-building industry in Kenya a major boost.
