CHAN 2024: Nyamweya urges fans to show decorum in Harambee Stars matches

Former Football Kenya Federation President Sam Nyamweya, has appealed to Kenyan fans at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) to show decorum to avoid sanctions from the Confederation of African Football.

He commended the Kenya fans for their solidarity and support they have shown Harambee Stars, which has propelled the team in its first 3 matches so far.

“Kenyan football has always been known for its vibrant, colourful, and passionate supporters. However, in this international tournament, our passion must go hand in hand with discipline and respect. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has clear guidelines on fan behaviour, safety, and stadium decorum, which all supporters are required to observe.” Said Nyamweya

Nyamweya called on fans to refrain from any acts of hooliganism, pitch invasion, or throwing objects.

-Respect match officials, players, and fellow fans, regardless of the match outcome; avoid use of discriminatory, abusive, or provocative language; and observe all security, safety, and protocols in place.

He added that any breach of CAF regulations can lead to severe penalties, including fines, loss of hosting rights, or even disqualification of our team.

“Let us show Africa and the world that Kenya’s football culture is rooted in sportsmanship, respect, and unity. Together, we can cheer our team to victory while upholding the highest standards of conduct.” Nyamweya emphasised

His sentiments come when CAF has condemned several security breaches witnessed in past CHAN matches involving Harambee Stars.

CAF has threatened to impose severe disciplinary actions against Kenya if fans breach security measures, among them being forced to play home matches away.

Kenya is scheduled to play Zambia in the last group C matches this Sunday at 3pm at the Moi Kasarani stadium.

  • Nyamweya congratulates Gor Mahia for winning the Kenyan Premier League

Nyamweya congratulates Gor Mahia for winning the Kenyan Premier League

Shabana FC Patron Sam Nyamweya has congratulated Gor Mahia FC for retaining the FKF Premier League title yesterday with three matches to spare.

Gor Mahia were crowned the FKF Premier League title for the record 21st time after beating Muhoroni Youth 3-0 in Murang’a, a result that saw them amass 67 points, 11 points ahead of the 2nd-placed Tusker FC.

“I take this opportunity in my capacity as a football stakeholder and supporter of community-based clubs to congratulate Gor Mahia for winning the 2023/24 Kenyan Premier League title. By winning its 21st league title, Gor Mahia has indeed cemented its position as the undisputed and most successful club in Kenyan football. Pride of place should go to the players and technical staff who have shown resilience even in adverse conditions to continue dictating Kenyan football, something that is worth being emulated by other community-based clubs.” said Nyamweya

By winning the 2023/2024 Gor Mahia title, The Green Army becomes the most decorated football club in the country and will be representing the country in the CAF Champions League next season.

“I also congratulate the club’s management, led by Ambrose Rachier, who has put in his time and efforts over the last decade, taking Gor Mahia from the doldrums and threat of relegation to re-emerge as the Kings of Kenyan football. At the same time, I credit my friend Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, whose continued support for Gor Mahia and, by extension, the AFC Leopards and Shabana has given the three leading community clubs something to smile about. Owalo has financially supported Gor Mahia and extended his hand to the AFC Leopards and Shabana FC.” Nyamweya added

The former FKF President also challenged Gor Mahia to emulate their Tanzanian clubs, Simba and Yanga, who have excelled in continental football this season, reaching the quarter finals.

According to Nyamweya, such success needs adequate preparations and the right investments, as well as appealing to the government to support the community-based club in its continental assignments.

“Gor Mahia should now shift attention to the Africa Champions League, where it is going to represent the country. This is a competition no Kenyan club has won, but we must take cue from our neighbors in Tanzania, whose clubs Yanga and Simba are now respected across Africa for their performances. We all know Gor Mahia has what it takes to bring back continental glory to Kenya, having done the same in 1987 when it became the first and, so far, the only club in East Africa to achieve this feat by winning the Africa Cup Winners Cup. The government should put in mechanisms to assist Gor Mahia in its quest for continental glory.” continued Nyamweya

Meanwhile, Nyamweya has challenged Shabana FC to put on a strong finish in their three remaining fixtures to ensure they remain in the top-flight league.

“I also want to encourage Shabana FC to put up a strong fight in the last few games to ensure they survive relegation. Shabana has sparked more interest in the league since its promotion, and while the performance has not been up to the required expectations, the management and technical bench are working tirelessly to ensure the club retains its status in the top league. As patron of Shabana, I am offering full support to the players and technical bench as they prepare for the final three games. I am encouraged by their commitment, and I trust they will deliver good results.” concluded Nyamweya

Shabana currently occupies the 16th position in the FKF Premier League table with 29 points and must pull up a string of good results from their remaining fixtures against AFC Leopards,Bidco United, and Murang’a Seal to retain their status.

  • Nyamweya calls for CS Ababu’s intervention to allow Bandari compete in  Mapinduzi Cup

Nyamweya calls for CS Ababu’s intervention to allow Bandari compete in  Mapinduzi Cup

Former  Football Kenya Federation President Sam Nyamweya, has urged Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba to step in and end the impasse between the FKF and Premier League team Bandari FC, regarding the club’s participating in this year’s  Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar.

This comes after FKF decided to prohibit the team from participating in the invitational event, citing concerns that it would interfere with the smooth operation of the premier league.

“On behalf of football stakeholders in the country, we are deeply concerned about the Football Kenya Federation’s drastic and uncalled-for stoppage of Kenya Premier League side Bandari FC from participating in the Mapinduzi Cup.

The Mapinduzi Cup is an annual football tournament held in Zanzibar, Tanzania, featuring teams from various East African countries. This decision by Waziri has had widespread criticism, as we believed that the FKF had overreacted and that the club should have been allowed to participate in the tournament.

“The federation’s actions are overly cautious and have had a negative impact on the club and its players.

This was a moment for Bandari to try their new signings and prepare for the second phase of the league. The federation should have taken more diplomatic measures to address the concerns and see the team participate in the tournament. This decision will also have long-term implications for future sports events and collaborations between East African countries.

They contend that the withdrawal of Bandari FC from the Mapinduzi Cup could be perceived as a lack of trust and confidence in the host country’s ability to ensure the safety and security of visiting teams, potentially affecting the willingness of other countries to participate in future events.

This is a spat in the face of the East African Community call for integration.
We call upon the ministry to address the issue and allow the team to participate in the  tournament.”said Nyamweya

The competition was set to take place in Zanzibar from January 28 to January 13.

Bandari was in group C ,alonsgide KVZ FC, Yanga Sports Club, and Vital O—but was forced  to withdraw from the annual competition.

In group B, Simba SC will face APR, Simida BS, and Jamhuri SC; in group A, the host Mlandege FC, Chipukizi United, Uganda Revenue Authority, and Azam FC are in action.

Former Football Federation of Kenya President Sam Nyamweya met with all 47 County Football Association officials in Nakuru on Sunday to deliberate on next year’s election, slated for February 24th.

The officials called for urgent intervention by the Sports Cabinet secretary to give a clear road map and ensure that elections will be conducted under the Sports Act as early as January 24th next year, to pave the way for preparation for the CHAN and AFCON tournaments.

The grassroots football leaders also urged the world football governing body FIFA and the continental body CAF to abide by the Kenyan Sports Act.

The meeting also joined other leaders and Kenyan fans to congratulate the Harambee Starlets under-20 team for progressing to the third round of the World Cup qualifier, where they are set to meet Cameroon.

“We want the elections to be done in a free and conducive environment where all the candidates are given respect and all competitors conduct their campaigns with decorum and decency, which will be the hallmark of our democracy.

I look forward to engaging other constituencies of FKF because they are part of the football family. The agenda is to make a clear roadmap for the football Kenya Federation elections.” said Nyamweya

Several candidates have already declared their interest in the top FKF job in next year’s election.
