    In form Chebet misses 5000m World Record by 2.5 Secs in Rome

    In form, Beatrice Chebet missed 2.5 seconds breaking the 5000m world record at the Rome Golden Gala Diamond League on Friday night.

    The double Olympic champion crossed the finish line in 14:03.69, a meeting record, a world-leading time, and the second-fastest time ever recorded in the 12.5-lap race, after the 1997 Gudaf Tsegay time of 14:00.21.

    Freweyni Hailu of Ethiopia finished 2nd in 14:19.33, while Italian Nadia Batocletti finished a distant 3rd in 14:23.15.

    “I can see that my body is in good shape and that I am capable of achieving the world record. Now I am going home to prepare for it. Everything is possible.” said Chebet

    It was the 2nd fastest time recorded by Chebet in less than a month over long distance after posting a world-leading time in the Rabat Diamond League last month.

    2019 World Champion Timothy Cheruiyot finished 2nd in the 1500m with a personal best time of 3:29.75, just 0.02 seconds behind French Nadsine Habb, who out sprinted him in the closing moments to emerge victorious.

    Commonwealth champion Ferdinand Omanyala finished 3rd in the 100m in 10.01 seconds.

    American Trayvon Brommell won the race in a world-leading time of 9.84 seconds, followed by Cameroonian Emmanuel Eseme in 9.99 seconds.

    Chebet among 11 Olympic champions to battle in Rome Diamond League

    Double Olympic Champion Beatrice will be among the 11 Olympic Champions who will be competing at the Rome Golden Gala in Italy on Friday, 6th June.

    Chebet will be in search of a 3rd victory in the Diamond League this season after claiming victories in Xiamen and Rabat.

    The Diamond League defending champion got her season off to a great start, winning 5,000m in Xiamen in 14:27.12, before missing a 3,000m world record by a whisker, clocking the 2nd best and world-leading time of 8:11.56 in Rabat.

    The World silver medallist over the distance will run against her compatriot Margaret Akidor, facing off against a host of Ethiopians, among them Asayech Ayichew, Aleshign Baweke, Freweyni Hailu and Gudaf Tsegay.

    2019 World Champion Timothy Cheruiyot will participate in the 1500m, alongside fellow Kenyans Reynold Cheruiyot, who finished 2nd in Rabat, and African Champion Brian Komen.

    Olympian Susan Ejore and African silver medallist Purity Chepkirui will compete in the 1500m as Africa’s fastest man in the 100m. Ferdinand Omanyala will take on four Americans led by 3-time world champion Fred Kerley, Trayvon Bromell, Lindset Coutney and Brandon Hickling. emen.
