    PS Tum visits national women’s teams residential training to motivate them

    Sports Principal Secretary Eng. Peter Tum yesterday visited the Harambee Starlets and the U17 girls’ national team at their residential training camp at Kasarani Stadium.

    His visit came as both teams prepare for crucial upcoming qualifiers: the Harambee Starlets facing Tunisia in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers, and the U17 team gearing up for their FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers against Uganda.

    Addressing the players, Eng. Tum expressed his admiration for their dedication and resilience.

    “Your commitment to the sport and your country is truly inspiring,” he remarked. “As you step onto the field, remember that you carry the hopes of an entire nation. Play with passion, unity, and confidence.”

    Eng. Tum highlighted the government’s deliberate investments aimed at nurturing football talent across the country.

    He emphasised the pivotal role of school games as foundational platforms for identifying and developing young athletes.

    “Our investment in school sports has yielded remarkable results,” he noted. “Talents like Velma Awuor, Lorna Faith, Quinter Adhiambo, Christine Adhiambo, and Halima Imbachi have risen through these ranks, showcasing the effectiveness of our grassroots programs.”

    Harambee Starlets are set to host Tunisia in the first leg at Ulinzi Sports Complex tomorrow, before travelling to Tunis on February 26 for the return leg.

    The winner of the tie will advance to face either Nigeria or Gambia for a spot in next year’s WAFCON finals in Morocco.

    Meanwhile, the U17 team is intensifying preparations for their qualifiers in Uganda, aiming to build on their recent successes and secure a place in the upcoming FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

    Counter accusations as PS Tum denies involvement in Kemsa scandal

    Immediate former PS for Medical Services Peter Tum has denied any involvement in the Ksh3.7 billion Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) procurement scandal.

    Tum Tuesday told the Senate Committee on Health which is probing alleged irregularities in the purchase of mosquito nets that he never played any role in the tendering process that was canceled after details emerged that Kemsa submitted an unqualified bidder to Global Fund.

    Tum who was moved to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports after the scam said the role fell squarely in the docket of the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards headed by former colleague Dr. Josephine Mburu.

    He said her department was responsible for handling Malaria and TB matters including procurement of nets.

    Dr Mburu who was sacked in the graft purge last month threw Tum under the bus after she claimed the programme was under his docket.

    While denying the accusations, Tum however stated that Kemsa was under Medical Services until March 2023 adding that his department handled HIV matters only.

    Ms Mburu who was grilled by the committee early this month absolved herself from blame.

    While calling for a fair hearing and justice, the former PS urged the Senate to expedite its investigations to unearth the real culprits.

    Several top Ministry of Health officials and KEMSA CEO Terry Ramadhani were also suspended in the graft purge.

    Health CS, Kemsa top officials, and Global Fund representatives have since been interrogated by the Senator Jackson Mandago-led committee.

    The fund had floated tenders for the supply of 10.2 million long-lasting polyethylene and polyester nets to be distributed from November to July next year as part of a mass campaign.

    PS Tum to appear before senators over Kemsa scandal

    Immediate former PS Medical Services Peter Tum is expected to appear before the Senate Committee on Health to shed light on the Ksh 3.7 billion Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) procurement scandal.

    According to a press invite, Tum is scheduled to appear at 10 am.

    “The purpose of the meeting is to meet with PS (Eng.) Peter Tum, OGW, Principal Secretary, State Department of Sports, and immediate former PS, State Department of Medical Services, MoH to deliberate on the alleged irregularities in the procurement of long-lasting insecticidal nets at the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority” reads the invite.

    Tum was moved to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in a graft purge that saw the Principal Secretary at the State Department of Public Health Dr Josephine Mburu and the entire board sacked.

    Ms Mburu who was grilled by the committee early this month absolved herself from blame over the cancellation of tender for the procurement of mosquito nets.

    She claimed she did not interfere with the tendering process disclosing that the role fell squarely in the docket of her former colleague in the Ministry Eng. Peter Tum.

    While calling for a fair hearing and justice, the former PS said she learned about her sacking from the media.

    She further urged the Senate to expedite its investigations to unearth the real culprits.
