Wetang’ula Accuses Opposition of Fueling Voter Anger Ahead of 2027 Polls

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has launched a scathing attack on the Opposition, accusing them of orchestrating a campaign to incite Kenyans to vote out of anger and tribal animosity in the 2027 General Elections.

Speaking during a fundraiser at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Njoro, Nakuru County, Wetang’ula warned that the Opposition’s rhetoric is designed to provoke emotional voting, a tactic he said could lead to disastrous leadership choices.

“The Opposition is on a calculated charm offensive, weaponizing voter anger and hatred ahead of 2027,” Wetang’ula told congregants, and urged them to remain sober and vigilant at the ballot.

The Speaker cautioned that allowing emotions to dictate electoral decisions could open the door for unqualified leaders and plunge the country back into political instability.

“Don’t vote out of hatred or vengeance. Ignore leaders whose agenda is to stir your emotions for their political gain,” said Speaker Wetang’ula.

Wetang’ula also took aim at tribal politics, reiterating his longstanding call for national unity and peaceful coexistence.

He invoked the tragic memories of the 2007/08 post-election violence, noting that Njoro was one of the hardest-hit regions during that dark chapter in Kenya’s history.

“Njoro paid a heavy price for tribal-driven politics. Let us not allow history to repeat itself,” he said.

The Speaker didn’t mince his words when addressing those campaigning along ethnic lines, accusing them of endangering Kenya’s hard-won peace.

“Even if you’re desperate for the presidency, do not use your ambition to undermine our national unity. Kenya belongs to all of us,” Wetang’ula stated firmly.

He praised ODM leader Raila Odinga’s recent cooperation with President William Ruto as a bold and patriotic gesture, hitting back at critics who labeled the move a betrayal.

“Those castigating Raila Odinga for working with President Ruto are not interested in Kenya’s future — they thrive on discord and dysfunction,” Wetang’ula declared.

He was flanked by several MPs who echoed his sentiments, championing peace and urging Kenyans to reject divisive political tactics.

Njoro MP Charity Kathambi, Kimilili’s Didmus Barasa, Webuye East’s Martin Pepela, and Nakuru County MP Liza Chelule joined in condemning tribal incitement.

“Njoro’s economic scars from the 2007/08 violence are still visible,” Barasa warned and noted: “Kenyans must not allow political greed to take us back.”

Chelule highlighted Nakuru County as a model of harmonious coexistence in a multi-ethnic society.

“Nakuru has rejected tribalism. We elect leaders based on merit, not ethnicity — that’s the future we must all embrace,” she affirmed.

Ruto says today’s events were treasonous, vows to restore normalcy

President William Ruto has condemned the violence witnessed during today’s anti-finance bill protests.

In a state address from State House, the President described the day’s events as an “unprecedented attack on Kenya’s democracy, rule of law, and the integrity of its constitutional institutions.”

“Today’s attack on Kenya’s constitutional order has resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property, and desecration of institutions and emblems of our sovereignty,” President Ruto stated.

The head of state assured Kenyans that the government has mobilized all available resources to prevent a recurrence of such violence.

He commended security officers for their efforts in defending the country and directed all national security organs to implement measures to thwart any attempts to undermine security and stability.

“As the people of Kenya go to bed tonight, I give you my assurance that your security, that of your families and property, remains my utmost priority,” assured President Ruto.

The President warned individuals responsible for the violence that the government would take decisive action against them.

“I put on notice the planners, financiers, orchestrators, and arbiters of violence and anarchy that the security infrastructure established to protect our republic and its sovereignty will be deployed to secure the country and restore normalcy,” he said.

While lauding the youth for expressing for their role in organizing a democratic discourse around critical national issues, Ruto stressed the need to distinguish between criminals and peaceful protestors.

“We must isolate crime from democratic expression and separate criminals from people exercising the freedom of expression and divergent opinion. I shall continue a government that is fully committed to maintaining the integrity of our state, promoting the unity of our nation and enhancing the peace and security of all citizens and their livelihoods,” he stated

JSC ready to rein on corrupt Judges, CJ Koome says

Chief Justice Martha Koome has reiterated Judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability within its ranks.

Speaking during the handing over ceremony by the outgoing Chief Registrar Anne Amadi on Friday, Koome asserted that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) stands ready to process complaints against any Judge or Judicial Officers implicated in corruption.

However, the Chief Justice emphasized that such complaints must strictly adhere to the procedures outlined in the constitution.

“The Commission will only act on the basis of evidence and not on blanket statements or allegations that have not been substantiated. Doing otherwise, will mean an overthrow of the Constitution and the rule of law,” remarked Koome.

Koome, who is also the Chairperson of the JSC, urged Judges and Judicial Officer to continue discharging their duties in accordance with their oaths of office.

“Let us remain true to the constitutional instruction that the discharge of judicial duties shall be subject only to the Constitution and the law, and not the direction or control of any person or authority,” she stated.

Koome’s sentiments come in the wake of recent remarks by President William Ruto challenging the integrity of the Judiciary.

Ruto accused the Judiciary of shielding corrupt Judges under the pretext of judicial independence to undermine government development projects such as the affordable housing programme.

“We will ensure that we all respect the sovereignty of the people of Kenya. When I say, and I repeat, that we must deal firmly with corruption in the judiciary, I mean that. We will completely root out corruption in the judiciary,” declared President Ruto during the launch of affordable housing projects.
