    Inside Ruto’s separate calls with UN Chief and Somali President

    President William Ruto on Thursday evening held a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary General António Guterres.

    In an update on social media, Ruto said the discussions focused on UN’s continued support for the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti.

    During the talks, Guterres commended Kenya’s leadership in spearheading efforts to restore stability in the Caribbean nation, which has been grappling with gang violence and political unrest.

    Ruto also briefed the UN chief on regional peace efforts in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as well as the outcomes of the recent joint East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit.

    “I highlighted the outcomes of the recent joint East African Community–Southern African Development Community summit, which built on previous initiatives and endorsed a clear roadmap with immediate, medium, and long-term actions,” said Ruto.

    The president urged the UN to support the joint EAC-SADC regional efforts in implementing the roadmap for peace in eastern DRC.

    “We reaffirmed our shared commitment to regional peace, security, and sustainable conflict resolution, emphasising the importance of continued collaboration between the United Nations and regional initiatives,” he stated.

    Separately, Ruto held a telephone conversation with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, where they reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties.

    “I held a telephone conversation with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, during which we reaffirmed our shared commitment to promoting regional peace and stability for the mutual benefit of our two nations,” said Ruto.

    The two leaders underscored the need for coordinated efforts in addressing common security challenges, including the fight against terrorism, which threaten both regional and global peace.

    AU reaffirms support for Somalia’s stability, development

    The African Union has reaffirmed its unwavering support for development and peacebuilding efforts in Somalia.

    African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf arrived in Mogadishu Sunday, for a two-day official visit to Somalia where he was received by Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama upon arrival at Aden Adde International Airport, along with cabinet ministers and senior officials from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

    In a statement on X, the African Union Commission Chairperson Youssouf commended Somalia’s continued progress in advancing stability, governance, and regional integration.

    He emphasised the significance of his visit, being his first official trip since assuming office, underscoring the African Union’s commitment to supporting Somalia.

    “As a founding member of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the predecessor to the African Union Commission, Somalia remains steadfast in its commitment to continental unity, solidarity, and multilateral cooperation.”

    On his part, the Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, expressed appreciation for the Chairperson’s visit, underscoring the shared vision of strengthening collaboration between Somalia and the AU.

    The visit will feature high-level engagements with the country’s leadership and African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
