MP Were Murder: Another suspect arrested, motorcycle recovered

Another suspect linked to the fatal shooting of Kasipul MP Charles Were has been arrested.

Amos Barasa Kasili was apprehended in the Kibera Darajani area following a thorough investigation that forensically connected him to the main suspects and placed him at the crime scene on April 30.

The DCI revealed that Barasa was the rider of the motorcycle registration number KMFZ 413W, a Bajaj Boxer that the assailants used to trail the MP’s vehicle and later as a getaway bike after the attack.

Detectives added that Barasa, who was found in possession of the motorcycle, confessed to the crime and admitted receiving Ksh. 50,000 as part of his compensation.

“Investigations uncovered that Barasa is a habitual criminal who masquerades as a Boda Boda operator, often collaborating with armed criminal gangs during their operations. During interrogation, he disclosed his involvement in the crime, revealing that he had been engaged by the main actors and received a payment of Ksh. 50,000 as part of his compensation,” the DCI revealed.

Additionally, the motorcycle recovered from Barasa matches the description of the bike captured by CCTV footage near Parliament, which was seen trailing the late MP’s vehicle.

“Profiling the suspect further revealed his extensive criminal background, including previous incarceration at Industrial Area Prison, where he encountered some of the individuals involved in this heinous act”, DCI added.

Barasa is currently being processed for arraignment as investigations continue.

MP Were Murder: Alleged assassin detained for 30 days

The alleged assassin of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were has been detained for 30 days to allow completion of investigations.

This is after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution informed a Chief Magistrate Court based at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport that the suspect Isaac Kuria was arrested in Isebania, near the Kenya-Tanzania border, while allegedly attempting to flee the country and Investigators need time to complete investigations.

Isaac Kuria, also known as “Kush”, is the 11th suspect to be arraigned in Court in connection with the late Kasipul legislator Charles Ong’ondo Were’s murder, and is the suspected hitman.

Investigators told the Court that Kuria’s arrest followed a dramatic manhunt through several counties that he moved through while trying to evade arrest, but they caught up with him last week at Isebania near the Kenya-Tanzania border.

Last Friday, the court allowed the detention of Were’s bodyguard, his driver and a boda boda rider who allegedly ferried Kuria to the crime scene.

The latest development comes even as a Milimani High Court Judge Alexander Muteti, ordered Phillip Aroko, another suspect in Were’s murder, to remain in police custody as directed by the JKIA Law Court last Friday for seven days.

His lawyers had on Friday filed a habeas corpus before Milimani’s High Court demanding that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers present him dead or alive.

Aroko requested to withdraw the application, arguing that the orders sought had already been overtaken by events.
