Late football brothers Diogo Jota and Andre Silva to be interred today

Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva, who perished in a road accident in Spain early this week, will be buried today.

The bodies of the two arrived in northern Portugal on Friday for a wake in their hometown, as tributes continued to pour in after they died in a car accident in Spain.

A convoy of hearses left for Gondomar near Porto on Thursday evening from the morgue of Puebla de Sanabria, near where the Lamborghini the brothers were travelling in had veered off the road and burst into flames after midnight early on Thursday. Police said they suspected a tyre had burst.

Dozens of mourners were already standing outside at the church last night and tears rolled down their faces as the hearses transporting the two bodies arrived after 11pm.

The funeral is set for today Saturday at a church nearby at 10:00 a.m. local time, Gondomar’s mayor’s office said.

The death of Jota at the age of 28 has jolted the world of football, with messages of homage pouring in from former teammates, clubs, national leaders and fans.

Outside Liverpool’s Anfield stadium fans left flowers, scarves and hand-written notes, many from children.

Football clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, who have several Portuguese internationals in their squad, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Real Madrid observed a moment of silence during training for their matches in the Club World Cup taking place in the United States.

Jota was making his way back to Liverpool by car after he was told he should avoid plane travel for up to six weeks following lung surgery to address a fractured rib, his physiotherapist Miguel Goncalves told broadcaster Now late on Thursday.

Goncalves said Jota was recovering well from the pneumothorax surgery and that he had planned to take a ferry to the UK from Spain.

UEFA Champions League spots are up for grabs ahead of the season ender matches on Sunday evening.

With the title decided (Liverpool continue to bask in the glory of their emphatic triumph this season) and relegation settled (Southampton, Ipswich Town and Leicester City are heading straight back to the EFL Championship a year after securing their promotion to the top flight), the focus will fall on the battle for places in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.

Champions Liverpool are looking to end a successful campaign with a win over Crystal Palace at Anfield and runners-up Arsenal will be confident of wrapping up their season with a routine victory against relegated Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

To that end, the key clashes are Aston Villa away to Manchester United, and Nottingham Forest hosting Chelsea.

Aston Villa have come on strongly in the last few weeks, with their strong run in the Champions League fueling their desire to have more European nights next season, and they will back themselves to win at Old Trafford against a Man United team which has performed well in Europe, but been dismal in the Premier League.

The Red Devils will also be coming into this game off the back of a season-defining appearance in the Europa League final on Wednesday 21 May, and be on either a major emotional high or low.

Meanwhile, Manchester City, who have a game in hand, have their fate in their own hands, as they will secure a top-five finish if they win their last two matches, which are against AFC Bournemouth at Etihad Stadium on May 20 and Fulham at Craven Cottage on May 25.

Liverpool host Tottenham as they need a point to be crowned EPL champions

Due to being encompassed by the FA Cup semi-final matches, which are scheduled for 26-27
April, the Premier Leagues matchday 34 will spread over 10 days and will be headlined by an
encounter between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool would be crowned Premier League champions with a win or draw over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on April 27,after Arsenal drew against Crystal Palace.

“At our training ground, we are just focused on the training sessions we do and trying to prepare in the best possible way for Tottenham, which is a team where all the injuries are coming back and are a team that deserves our full attention,” Liverpool manager Arne Slot said.

“The boys also have one or two days off during this week because we’ve planned that already a long time ago and hopefully they will enjoy some time with their loved ones and be fully focused when we are back together to work towards Tottenham.”

At the Etihad Stadium on 22 April, outgoing champions Manchester City will be targeting a third successive win when they host their top-five rivals, Aston Villa, who are one of the most in-form teams in the Premier League right now, having won five matches in a row.

“Now it’s in our hands. A final on Tuesday [at home to Aston Villa], then two more games home and away. Hopefully, we can achieve the success of qualifying for the Champions League,” City manager Pep Guardiola said.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will be looking to consolidate their spot in the top five with a victory over Everton, who will be determined to bounce back to winning ways at Stamford Bridge on 26 April, after losing to Manchester City at home on matchday 33.

“This is a huge win for us because coming to Fulham is never easy. It can definitely give us confidence for the remaining games – both in the league and in Europe,” Chelsea defender Levi Colwill said.

“But we have to just keep taking each game as it comes. The focus now is on Everton in our next game, a tough fixture, but one we can take confidence into following this victory.”

On 27 April, Manchester United will be keen to avoid a third consecutive league defeat when they lock horns with a dangerous AFC Bournemouth side at the Vitality Stadium, where the Cherries overcame Fulham in their last home game.

“We created chances [against Wolverhampton Wanderers]. We were the better team on the pitch,” United manager Ruben Amorim said.

“That is a good sign, but it’s hard to take something positive in this moment. We need to win games and we should have more points.

“Now we are going to recover from this sequence and then we are going to return to prepare Bournemouth and also the Europa League.”

Liverpool to be spurred on by Salah as they visit Leicester City

With Liverpool driven by the prolific goal getting prowess of Mohamed Salah this season, the Reds will look to move one step closer to bagging the 2024/25 Premier League crown, when they take on Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Reds moved 13 points clear at the top of the pile this past weekend after jotting down a 2-1 win against West Ham at Anfield on Sunday.

Salah’s assist to Luis Diaz’ 18th minute opener saw the Egyptian move to 18 assists for the season. Along with his 27 league goals, Salah increased his tally of goal involvements in the top flight to 45, the most in Premier League history.

Speaking after the game, Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes that Salah is now back to his best.

“Alisson had his best game of the season today, Virgil scored the header and Mo was again important, he was lively in the first half – we saw the Mo Salah again from the first part of the season,” Slot said.

Elsewhere, 14th placed Manchester United are scheduled to take on Wolves at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

United suffered a damaging 4-1 loss to Newcastle last time out, a game in which goal-keeper Andre Onana faced the selection axe.

“It’s a normal situation,” United head coach Ruben Amorim said, in his explanation for dropping Onana for the tie.

“You have to manage everything, sometimes people just look at the physical aspect but the mental aspect is really, really important.”

  • Liverpool hosts West Ham in round 32 as they inch closer to coronation

Liverpool hosts West Ham in round 32 as they inch closer to coronation

Liverpool will look to move closer to their title coronation, and the race for UEFA Champions League qualification hots up, as Matchday 32, of the Premier League is held from Saturday 12 to Monday 14 April 2025.

Liverpool have been champions in waiting for most of the season, and on Sunday they will look to move one step closer to picking up the trophy when they welcome West Ham United to Anfield.

The Reds have battered the Hammers in recent meetings of the teams (claiming 5-0, 5-1 and 5-1 wins within the last four league meetings) and their supporters will expect another emphatic showing in the Mersey side sunshine.

West Ham have shown signs of improvement under Graham Potter, who believes that his sacking by Chelsea back in 2023 helped him grow as a person and as a coach: “In football, there are always ups and downs,” he explained.

“I didn’t want to lose my job, but when I look back, I can see it was probably the best thing for me. I’ve learned so much, and I think the next 10 or 20 years of my career will be better because of that experience.”

The weekend’s action opens on Saturday afternoon with Manchester City hosting Crystal Palace. The Citizens find themselves battling the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Fulham in the race to finish in the Champions League qualification berths (which is likely to stretch down to the top five, due to English teams’ strong performance in UEFA competitions this season).

“People say how well Manchester City have played in recent years and one of the reasons is our work ethic, our discipline. We conceded few. This season is an exception in our period here together,” admitted manager Pep Guardiola.

“We don’t have the same players, definitely not. We are not the same as the last years – and it will be different next year.”

Saturday also features a London derby between Arsenal and Brentford, Sunday is headlined by a clash between Newcastle United and Manchester United at St James Park, and the round-closing game on Monday night is between AFC Bournemouth and Fulham.

Manchester City host Liverpool in an epic EPL clash

A tasty weekend of Premier League action will be headlined by a blockbuster clash between
    Manchester City and Liverpool.

Man City will host Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on the evening of Sunday 23 February, in a
match which will be something of a ‘changing of the guard’, as the Reds look to claim a victory over the outgoing champions. Symbolically, this would confer the status of ‘champions elect’ to Arne Slot’s Liverpool – though the Dutchman remains well aware that the championship is far from
    confirmed.

“What I want from [my players] and what they want from each other is that they fight in every single game from the first until the last second to get the maximum result and that's what the fans expect from them playing for this club,” said Slot. “That's what we try to do in every single game and it’s also necessary if you want to have any chance of a result in this league.”

Earlier on Sunday, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest will meet in a crunch match at St
James Park – a six-pointer as fas as the scrap to finish in the top four or five of the standings, and thereby secure qualification to next season’s UEFA Champions League.

King Power Stadium, while Saturday’s early kick-off at Goodison Park sees Everton host
Manchester United – with Toffees manager David Moyes hoping to put one over his former club.

Saturday’s late afternoon kick-offs are headlined by a London derby between Arsenal and West
Ham United at the Emirates Stadium, while the early evening match pits Aston Villa against
Chelsea – with the Birmingham side hoping new signing Marcus Rashford can make a big impact
