Two robbery suspects arrested as police recover stolen goods in Kisauni

Police in Mombasa have arrested two suspects linked to a series of robberies and recovered stolen household items in an operation in Kisauni, Mombasa County.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Mjambere Police Station conducted the operation across Barsheba, Kagujo and surrounding areas, leading to the arrest of the two suspects and the recovery of a cache of electronics and household goods believed to have been stolen.

The duo is believed to be part of a criminal network behind several robberies and burglaries reported in Kisauni and neighbouring Kadzandani.

Some of the recovered items have already been identified by a 21-year-old student from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), who had earlier reported a theft incident.

The suspects are in custody at Mjambere Police Station and are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday to face charges related to the offences.

NPS attributed the arrests to information shared by members of the public, reiterating their commitment to strengthening security operations in the area and maintaining public safety.

CS Ruku leads food distribution in Mwakirunge, Mombasa

Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes, Geoffrey Ruku, led a food distribution drive in Mwakirunge, Kisauni, Mombasa County, reaching more than 1,000 families.

The initiative focused on supporting vulnerable mothers facing ongoing food insecurity.

CS Ruku was joined by Mombasa Woman Representative Zamzam Mohammed and Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba as they handed out essential food items to residents.

Many locals expressed appreciation, saying they felt seen and supported by the government.

Ruku emphasised that the distribution of food relief shows that the government is listening and taking action. “We’re not just giving food—we’re giving hope,” he said.

The Mwakirunge visit is part of a wider government relief effort that has seen food aid delivered to several regions hit by drought or floods, including Tana River, Ukambani, Garissa and parts of Nyanza.

During the event, CS Ruku outlined the government’s plan to reach every family affected by food insecurity, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

He also addressed the long-standing issue of land ownership in the region, assuring residents that the Ministry of Lands is working on lasting solutions. “Together with your MP, we will push for steps that bring you peace and security,” he said.

CS Ruku called on residents to support President William Ruto’s development agenda, pointing to renewed efforts to revive key projects in the Coast region.

He ended by urging public servants to serve with integrity, humility, and purpose. “Public office is not a privilege—it’s a duty to deliver for the people,” he said.

  • Kisauni students appeal for help to join Form One 6 months after sitting KCPE

Kisauni students appeal for help to join Form One 6 months after sitting KCPE

Several students in Kisauni who sat for the KCPE in 2023 are yet to join Form One due to lack of school fees.

According to Sister Agnes Nanjala of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Mombasa, the students have resorted to menial jobs and domestic work to support their families and save money for school fees.

“The children performed well in the KCPE, scoring 300 marks and above. However, most parents are low-income earners, and many are jobless. Even paying rent is a challenge,” she said.

Sister Nanjala, who is also a social worker, added that most parents have been seeking bursaries unsuccessfully.

She called upon sponsors to come to the aid of the children who now face the risk of falling into drug and substance abuse, child labor, or early marriages.

She noted that many children and parents are showing signs of depression due to their dire circumstances.

Patrick Kithi, a resident of Kashani with three children, has one child in university on a scholarship and is now seeking assistance for his daughter to join secondary school.

Leah Mwenda, who scored 279 marks in the KCPE, expressed her determination to excel academically if given the chance. “I will work hard to become a teacher,” she said.

David Tsuma from Junda, a casual laborer in construction, also shared his plight. His daughter, who scored 340 marks in the KCPE, was admitted to Friends School Kikai Girls in Bungoma but has not been admitted due to financial constraints.

“I have tried to get bursaries but have been unsuccessful. I appeal to well-wishers to sponsor my daughter’s education,” he appealed.

Kahindi Koba, a father of four, is also struggling. His son, who scored 342 marks in the KCPE, was accepted to Msambweni Secondary School but couldn’t report due to a lack of fees.

“I want my son to realize his dream of becoming a pilot,” he stated.

Emily Umazi dreams of becoming a journalist but has been unable to join secondary school this term.

“I want to continue my education to solve our challenges at home and support my siblings and community,” she said.

Alarm over wave of juvenile crimes in Mombasa

Mombasa leaders have intensified calls for parents to seriously take responsibility for their children’s behaviours in the wake of a resurgence of juvenile crimes in Kisauni Sub-County.

County Commissioner (CC) Mohamed Nur said a security agencies had mobilized a mop up in Kisauni Sub-County to weed out the youthful criminals who have been terrorizing residents with impunity

“Yesterday alone, we arrested 23 people some are young people between 16 and 17 years engaging in crime. We will extend the operation to Likoni and Jomvu sub-counties to weed out criminals,” said Nur.

He decried that it was appalling to see people losing their phones or going to the mosque being attacked. “We won’t allow that trend to go in Mombasa,” he said.

Parents were urged to know their children’s whereabouts during school holidays and not to allow them to loiter around.

The County Commissioner (CC) Mohamed Nur was speaking after Eid-ul-Fitr Prayers at the Ronald Ngala grounds, he stated that in conjunction with the County Government, they will close down mugukaa chewing dens which are breeding grounds for criminals and children to stay there overnight.

“We want children at dusk to be at home, in the dens they acquire indecorous behaviour. We have finished Ramadhan we will close all the dens,” stated CC Nur.

In the renewed fight against Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the CC revealed that they have so far closed 167 bars, got heroin 160 sachets, and 30,000 litres of bootleg liquor was destroyed.

“We have also closed 21 chemists selling drugs to children. A chemist was found selling over the counter a sleeping pill to a seven-year-old child,” said the County Commissioner.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir echoed the County Commissioner’s sentiments saying there is no justification for anyone to engage in crimes and a child between 17 years and 20 years is supposed to be in school and shouldn’t use the lack of jobs as an excuse.

“Parents and community must take responsibility. Parents should also be interrogated about their children’s behaviour. Data shows that whenever schools are on crime rates are usually low but when they are closed crime surges. It is not right,” said Governor Nassir.

He warned children engaging in crimes that when they are apprehended their crime cases are being recorded and no employer will employ them.

Chief Kadhi Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein congratulated the Muslim faithful for cooperating with the security to ensure there was peace in Ramadhan epoch.

The Chief Kadhi urged Muslims to assist the less fortunate families. He lauded the government for its efforts to heighten security during the fasting month that enabled Muslims to perform night prayers and businesses to thrive.
