    Owalo calls for support of community based football clubs

    Former Cabinet Secretary for ICT and digital economy, Eliud Owalo has called for investment in non institutional clubs as a way of growing soccer in the country.

    Owalo said while the community clubs like AFC leapards , Gor Mahia and Shabana enjoy a massive community sipport and have churned some of the best players to ever grace the sport in the country, most continue to operate on shoe string budget without proper structures and funding to push them to the next next level.

    “Let’s support community clubs . Let’s invest in them so that we can realise more and more of Peter Dawo , Austin Oduor, and Washington Mukhanjis of the present generation.” Said Owalo .

    Owalo spoke on Friday as he donated 30 sets of tracksuits to Kakamega Homeboys FC at an event held at Kakamega High School in Kakamega .

    Owalo through his foundation  has previously extended his generous hand to Gor Mahia, purchasing them a team bus and training kits , Muhoroni Sugar and Shabana FC, who have benefited from training kits too.

    Former players like Washing ton Mukhanji Austin Oduor Peter Dawo John Shoto Lukoye who graced the occasion challenged the current crop of players to maintain discipline and dedication during their playing time but they must also prepare for a life after playing days.

    “As you play , plan and invest in your future, don’t sit back and think you’ll play forever. Warned Former Gor Mahia great Peter Dawo.

    Home boys have emerged as one of the firm fan favourites in the region, especially after the demise of Western Stima , Motcom, and Mumias sugar FC.
    Last year, they finished 8th in the 18th team league.

    Meanwhile , Homeboys management is calling for the completion of the ongoing construction works at Bukhungu stadium to enable them to utilise the pitch for the Premier league fixtures set to commence in a fortnight.

    The clubs owner, Clephas Shimanyula, says the continued delay in the completion of construction works at the stadium has denied them an opportunity to enjoy the homegrown advantage they’re used to while playing at the stadium.

    The new FKF Premier   league season  kicks off in a fortnight.

    Mudavadi: Supporting talent, skills for youth top on gov’ts agenda

    The Government has emphasized on the need to support talent and skills in sports and creative arts.

    Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi has affirmed Government’s commitment to support the youth, nurture and grow their talents across the country.

    He also highlighted the benefits of monetizing talent and creative works as a means of empowering the youth, job creation and contributing to economic growth.

    “Let us remain united as a people, look at emerging opportunities for the youth and help build their talents so that their talents can take them to greater heights,” said Mudavadi.

    He was speaking when he presided over the second edition of Elijah Lidonde Super Cup at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

    He also emphasized on the importance of exploiting key avenues and hidden talents especially at the grass root level across the country.

    For, instance, the CS said football offers a great opportunity for the youth, even as he urged stakeholders to explore and exploit the untapped potential in this sector.

    “We want to witness excellent times moving forward, and as we stage such tournaments to reflect and honour our legends like the late Elijah Lidonde, a great footballer of his times, we want to ensure that we put in place structures that will help in improving and growing football and other sports in the country,” said Mudavadi.

    The late Lidonde was capped 26 times for the Kenya national football team between 1950 and 1961 and he scored at least 33 goals for the national team during his career.

    The Elijah Lidonde foundation is the brain behind the Elijah Lidonde super cup and this years’ finals pitched Kakamega Homeboyz against AFC Leopards in the Christmas Eve INGO derby.

    Kakamega Homeboyz under the patronage of Cleophas Shimanyula emerged winners with a 1 -nil thriller over Ingwe, a goal that was scored in the second half by Davis Kasirye.

    The winners were awarded Ksh1 million and the tournaments trophy, defending champions, AFC Leopards walked away with a cash prize of Sh600,000, Mulembe FC emerged that and were awarded Sh350,000 while Nzoia FC was fourth and received a cash prize of Sh300,000.

    The tournament’s second edition was sponsored by betting firm 22Bet, with the Managing Director, Joash Ajuoga lauding Western Kenya for their enthusiasm for sports and especially football.

    “I want to pass my gratitude to the football legends who form part of the organizing committee for this tournament. It is very encouraging to come to mashinani and see where our players emerge from so that when planning at the national level, we fully understand as sponsors what journey has been travelled,” said Ajuoga.

    “As sponsors we are willing to take another step in supporting the grass roots talents as sports under the banner of the legends is a continuity of our history and it will help shape the future,” he added.

    Also, present were The Elijah Lidonde foundation patron Alex Muteshi, AFC Leopards Chairman Dan Shikanda, Kakamega Homeboyz patron Cleophas Shimanyula, Ikolomani MP Benard Shinali and Vihiga Deputy Governor Wilber Kitiezo among key football legends from Western Kenya.

    ‘Ingo’ derby as Leopards face Homeboyz in Lidonde Supercup final

    Defending champions, AFC Leopards, will face Kakamega Homeboyz in the Elijah Lidonde Super Cup final on Sunday evening at the Bukhungu stadium.

    Leopards advanced to the final after defeating National Super League side Mulembe United 1-0 in the the semis on Saturday in Bukhungu.

    Veteran midfielder Kevin Kimani scored the game’s crucial goal in the 77th minute with a fantastic free kick.

    The tournament’s second edition is sponsored by betting firm 22Bet.

    Defending Champions AFC Leopards will renew their rivalry against Kakamega Homeboyz in the Elijah Lidonde Super Cup final on Sunday evening at the Bukhungu stadium.

    Leopards qualified for the final after brushing aside National Super League side Mulembe United 1-0 in the semi final played on Saturday in Bukhungu.

    Veteran midfielder Kevin Kimani scored the important goal of the game via a brilliant free kick in the 77th minute.

    The 2nd edition of the tournament sponsored by betting firm 22Bet.

    Kakamega Homeboyz beat Nzoia Sugar 2-0 in another semi plated on Saturday at Bukhungu Stadium.

    Patrick Odhiambo’s men got their goals through Stephen Opoku in the 50th minute and Vincent Ogola 17 minutes from the final whistle.

    Sunday final will kick off at 3pm will be preceded by a 3rd place playoff pitting Mulembe United against Nzoia Sugar in Bukhungu Stadium at 12pm .

    The winners of Sunday’s final will walk home with Sh1 million in prize money together with a trophy, while the first runner-up will receive Sh500,000.

    The third and fourth-placed teams will be awarded Sh250,000 and Sh200,000 respectively.

    The tournament is being held in honor of the late Elijah Lidonde, who captained both Abaluhya (AFC Leopards) and Harambee Stars between 1950 and 1961 before passing away in September 1987.

    Kakamega Homeboyz edge out Tusker to lift Mozzart Bet Cup

     

    Kakamega Homeboyz were crowned winners of the 2023 Mozzart Bet FKF Cup after narrowly defeating Tusker FC 1-0 in an entertaining final played at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani,Nairobi.

    After a goalless first half Kakamega Homeboyz who had hit the cross in the opening 45 minutes finally found the breakthrough via well time Kevin Amwayi’s left foot shot in the 73rd minute.

    The goal stood for most part of the match if not the whole tie guranteeing the Kakamega based outfit the win and the title a first in their two decade history.

     

    The win earns them a lost to represent Kenya at next seaosn CAF secondary club competition,the Confederations Cup.

    Additionally, the team coached by Patrick Odhiambo walked away with winners prize of Ksh.2 million awhile Tusker was rewarded Ksh1Million for finishing in second place.

    In a preceding third place encounter, AFC Leopards beat Ulinzi Stars 1-0 thanks to Eugene Mukangula’s 67th minute strike.

    AFC leopards goalkeeper Levis Opiyo was named the tournaments best goalkeeper while Tusker’s Eric Otieno earned got Top Scorer award, Kakamega Homeboyz’s Moses Shummah emerged as the tourney’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
