Kakamega Governor condemns rise of political goonism

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has urged security agencies to take firm and decisive action to curb the growing culture of hooliganism in the country’s political space.

Speaking while addressing congregants at Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM) Church, Governor Barasa warned that the trend, if left unchecked, risks plunging the country into instability.

He expressed concern that political intolerance and violence are increasingly becoming normalized, and called for urgent intervention to safeguard peace and national cohesion.

The Governor also cautioned political leaders against turning funerals into arenas for political confrontation, stressing that such occasions must remain dignified to allow families and communities to mourn without disruption.

He further urged leaders to desist from premature political campaigns and instead prioritise delivery of tangible development projects that directly improve the livelihoods of wananchi.

His remarks come amid heightened political tensions in various parts of the country, with growing calls for responsible leadership, restraint, and accountability.

The government is implementing development programmes to meet the current, pressing needs while addressing long-term needs of citizenry across the country.

Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said the Cabinet led by President William Ruto has designed development programmes that address the unique and diverse population.

He said that there is no region or part of the country that is being excluded on any basis in terms of development.

“Development projects are being done equally because the plan of President William Ruto is that there is no place in the country that will be left behind in terms of development, we are awakening every area of this country with ongoing developments,” he noted.

The CS welcomed criticism as a responsive government which he said should be done within the confines of the law in order to protect lives, properties and minimize derailing the gains the country has achieved. Wandayi was speaking during the launch of rural electrification projects at Sababe and Mache B Villages in Malava Sub County on Friday.

The Electrification programme is being done by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation(REREC) in collaboration with the Kenya Power and Lighting Company(KPLC) to light up rural communities.

Through the programme, REREC will connect 95 homesteads at Mache B village and 50 homesteads at Sababe Village to the National Grid.

Wandayi noted that the government has allocated enough funds in this financial year to continue electrifying rural households in Kakamega County.

He said during the last financial year, the government spent Ksh 2.9 billion in the electrification programme in Kakamega County and Ksh 357 million for the programme in Malava Sub County.

The CS instructed the concerned officials in the Ministry to ensure that households which have been left out of the programme are connected to power.

He noted that the government is also going to erect high mast flood lights at Chegulo and Ingavira Markets in the next few weeks to open up the areas to 24 hours’ business.

“We also have plans to extend power lines to Ihanyi, Lusumu, Luasi and also Shitirira where we shall put a big transformer to serve the surrounding areas,” CS Wandayi disclosed.

Wandayi assured the communities that the government will ensure all the projects started are completed including the ones that are in the pipeline.

“We will ensure the projects we have started are completed including those we shall launch later,” he noted.

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa committed to set aside Ksh 30 million matching fund to ensure many households are connected to power in the county.

He urged REREC to also follow suit and match the fund that the county will set aside assuring communities that the county government is working closely with the National government to improve their lives.

The two leaders also criticized the opposition for lack of an agenda to the people of this country but only seeking to ascend to power yet they lack a clear vision for Kenya.

They urged the electorate to be careful, avoid paying attention in order not to be misled into the traps of thinking that the opposition are their saviors only to be led into more problems.

Governor Barasa warned the opposition against disrupting activities, creating tension and fear among people in Kakamega, warning that the county will not be converted to a political playing field as it will derail development.
