Five police officers from Gigiri Police Station, who were arrested for allegedly assisting in the escape of 13 suspects, have been released on a personal bond of Ksh200,000.

Milimani Principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi ruled that the prosecution failed to provide compelling reasons to justify detaining the officers for 14 days.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had sought additional days to hold the officers in custody to complete their investigation into the escape of 13 suspects, including the prime suspect in Kware murders, Collins Jumaisi.

However, the court noted that the officers are government employees and are not considered as flight risk.

Hon. Nanzushi further ruled that the officers have cooperated with the ongoing investigation, and there is no indication that they pose a risk of absconding.

The officers were ordered to report to the investigating officer twice a week as probe into the matter continues.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is appealing for public assistance in locating Kware murder suspect Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, who escaped from police custody on Monday, August 20.

Khalusha was set to face murder charges before he escaped from Gigiri Police Station alongside 12 other Eritrean nationals who were being held for immigration violations.

The DCI is now offering a significant cash reward to anyone with credible information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest.

“A significant cash reward will be provided to anyone with credible information leading to the suspect’s arrest. The suspect is from Shiru Sub-location, Shaviringa Location, Hamisi Sub- County in Vihiga County,” said the DCI.

The DCI has also provided hotlines for anonymous tips on the whereabouts of the escapee; 0800722203 or the police hotlines 999, 911, and 112, or report to any police station across the country.

Acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, described the escape as an “inside job” and assured that the police officers involved will be brought to book.

The DCI is currently detaining five police officers from Gigiri Police Station implicated in the incident as probe into the matter continues.

The officers include CPL Ronald Babo, PC Evans Kipkirui, PC Mollent Achieng, PC Zachary Nyabuto, and PC Gerald Mutuku.

Last month, Khalusha confessed to killing 42 women and disposing of their bodies at the Kware dumpsite.

Collins Jumaisi, the main suspect in the infamous Kware murders, has escaped from custody along with 12 other detainees held at Gigiri Police Station.

According to a report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Gigiri, the escape was discovered at around 5:00AM during a routine check.

Officers found that the suspects had cut through the wire mesh in the station’s basking bay.

Among the escapees are 12 Eritrean nationals who were being held for immigration violations.

Jumaisi, who confessed last month to killing 42 women and disposing of their bodies at a dumpsite over the past two years, remains at large.

His first victim was reportedly his wife, Imelda Judith Halenya, whom he strangled before dismembering her body.

“The suspect confessed to luring, killing, and disposing of 42 females from 2022, with the most recent victim being as recent as last Thursday, July 11. The suspect claimed his first victim was his wife, whom he strangled to death before dismembering her body. Based on our interrogation, all his victims were murdered in a similar manner. Investigations are ongoing,” said DCI boss Mohamed Amin during a previous media briefing.

A manhunt is currently underway, with police intensifying efforts to recapture the escapees.
