    Govt reaffirms commitment to disaster response

    The Government has assured of its unwavering commitment to ensure that all affected Kenyans receive timely support and assistance during disasters.

    Speaking in Kawangware on Tuesday after visiting families that were rendered homeless after a fire broke out, Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geofffey Ruku said the Government remains proactive in its disaster response efforts and alleviating the suffering of affected communities.

    “In the face of increasing fire outbreaks, floods, and landslides, especially in informal settlements, the government remains proactive in its disaster response efforts,” said CS Ruku.

    CS Ruku emphasized that to provide long-term solutions, the government is also intensifying its affordable housing programme, aiming to replace vulnerable informal structures with dignified, low-cost housing in urban villages.

    He further noted the Ministry, through the State Department for Special Programmes, reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Kenyans through timely interventions and sustainable development initiatives.

    He was joined by Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi, senior officials from the State Department for Special Programmes, and local National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) in distribution of emergency supplies including foodstuffs, beddings, soaps, and dignity packs were distributed to the victims following an early morning assessment

    The fire incident claimed one life and rendering 14 families homeless.

    The Government has intensified its flood response operations in Tana River County, distributing vital relief supplies worth over 60 million shillings to affected households in Garsen, Bura, and Galole constituencies. The initiative, led by Principal Secretary for the State Department for Special Programmes, Ismail Maalim, is part of a wider multi-agency effort to cushion vulnerable communities from the impact of recent floods.

    PS Maalim was accompanied by the Principal Secretary for ASALs and Regional Development, Harsame Kero, and area Members of Parliament during the distribution exercise, which saw hundreds of families receive foodstuff, household essentials, and other critical non-food items.

    “This mission is part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to support communities affected by recent floods and to ensure that no vulnerable household is left behind,” PS Maalim said during the visit.

    He noted that out of over 6,000 families affected by floods in the region, nearly 2,000 households have already received direct assistance through coordinated national and county government interventions.

    Beyond delivering aid, the team also conducted an on-ground assessment of recovery efforts, with the aim of informing longer-term support strategies and improving coordination of relief services.

    The PS also used the opportunity to urge residents to take full advantage of available government support programmes such as the Social Health Authority (SHA), which offers access to affordable healthcare, and the NYOTA programme, which equips young people with training and economic empowerment opportunities.

    “Our presence here is not just about distributing aid — it’s a message that Government stands with its people, in hardship and in hope. We will continue to walk this journey together, ensuring that no one is left behind,” he said.

    The relief exercise aligns with the Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which seeks to build resilience and deliver inclusive development to all regions.
