‘I won’t be drawn into politics’, DP Gachagua says

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua says he will not be drawn into political sideshows; stating that he is focused on assisting President William Ruto to succeed in the economic transformation and development of the country.

This comes even as MPs led by Jubilee Party leader Sabina Chege backed his call for devoted leadership and appealed to their colleagues in Parliament to dedicate their time to addressing the challenges facing the nation like youth unemployment.

Mr Gachagua on Friday said he is also focused on driving reforms in the agricultural sector, eradicating illicit brews and drug abuse, and supporting the President as his principal assistant.

These socio-economic programs, he said, will change the livelihoods of all Kenyans and shape the Ruto administration’s development legacy.

“I am not for politics. My focus is on national development, agricultural reforms, the fight against illicit brews, supporting the Church, and assisting the President to succeed. Those willing to do politics can continue. But they should also listen to the people and respect them. People are supreme,” he said in Gatanga, Murang’a county during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of ACK Thika Memorial Church School.

“The people/taxpayers are the employers of their leaders in public service. Hence, leaders should push the interests of the people, make the right decisions, and align with the people. As we work let us continuously engage Kenyans and get directions on how to proceed,” he said.

At the event, he was accompanied by his wife Pastor Dorcas, Murang’a Deputy Governor Stephen Mburu, Gatanga MP Wakili Edward Muriu, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, Nominated MP Sabina Chege and MCAs.

The school was celebrating 50 years since its establishment in 1974 by white settlers. Currently, the school has 1670 learners.

Backing the Deputy President, the MPs faulted their colleagues whom they claimed were concentrating on negative politics instead of working for Wananchi.

“I humbly request that we stop thinking about personalities and focus on issues facing Kenyans. Since the economy is on the recovery path let us focus on the real issues. I want to remind MPs that we have no time for sideshows and the impeachment talk. We need to sit in parliament to discuss bills that will improve the welfare of the people,” said MP Sabina Chege.

MP Edward Muriu asked leaders to unite and work towards the development of the nation.

“Great men are made during a crisis. We have a crisis of economy, debts, and unemployment. As leaders, we know the country will prosper when there is unity, peace, and partnerships. We will overcome the current crisis and we will go back to the track,” said Mr Muriu.

He further praised the Government over its development programs in Murang’a county, citing the ongoing water connection program at Ndakaini dam.

“For 49 years since the construction of the Ndakaini dam, it has been serving Nairobi people with water and excluding the locals living near the dam. But since the Kenya Kwanza administration came to power in 2022, Gatanga people will access the water. The contractor is on-site and the project will be commissioned soon by the President and the Deputy President,” he said.

DP Gachagua presides over release of funds for Inua Jamii

The government has released Ksh16.7 billion to over one million beneficiaries of Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Programme.

The funds will cover for the months of November 2022 to June 2023, which are in arrears.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said on Wednesday that the National Treasury had released a sum of Ksh16,725,856 for disbursement to 1,072,226 beneficiaries.

Each beneficiary will receive Ksh16,000 and the amount will be paid in two tranches. The beneficiaries of the money include orphans and vulnerable children, elderly persons and persons living with severe disabilities.

Stating that the government is committed to support the most vulnerable Kenyans, Gachagua said the kitty will be expanded in the supplementary budget to increase the number of beneficiaries to 2.5 million in the next two years.

“We continue to implement the Cash Transfer programme popularly known as Inua Jamii which provides bi-monthly stipend to cushion beneficiaries from poverty and vulnerabilities. This is aimed at improving their livelihoods,” said Gachagua.

He spoke at his official residence in Karen. He was accompanied by various government officials led by the Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection Florence Bore.

The Deputy President said that another Ksh11,185,000 will be paid as a top-up for beneficiaries under the Nutrition Improvement Through Cash and Health Education (NICHE), complementary programme.

This makes the total amount for both programmes to add up to Ksh16,737,041,000.

He said the funds will be credited to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries.

Each beneficiary will receive Ksh16,000 to be paid in two tranches in June and July 2023 being payment for four cycles. The payment will commence on June 28, 2023 through the six government contracted banks, said Gachagua.

In each cycle the government will release Ksh4,184,260,500.

“NICHE project combines social protection, nutrition and child protection aspects in programming. The project is being piloted in five arid and semi-arid land counties of Kitui, Kilifi, Marsabit and West Pokot. NICHE tragets Inua Jamii and hunger safety net programme households with children between 0-36 months and pregnant mothers,” said the Deputy President.

He explained that currently the project is supporting 8,656 households and each beneficiary will receive Ksh 4,000 as a top to the regular cash transfer.

Gachagua added that the Cabinet has approved a memorandum directing the National Treasury to be releasing money meant for Inua Jamii timely and predictable manner with effect from June 1, 2023.
