Sammy Kamau wins DCP nomination for Ol Kalou by-election

Sammy Kamau Ngotho has clinched the Democratic for the Citizens Party (DCP) ticket for the July 16 Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election

Ngotho was declared the winner Saturday, May 9, following party primaries held across all five wards of Ol Kalou Constituency. He garnered 12,957 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Paul Waiganjo, who secured 4,978 votes.

The former MCA was announced as the winner shortly after midnight, prompting jubilant celebrations among his supporters.

Speaking after his victory, Ngotho thanked everyone who contributed to the successful conduct of the exercise and called on his rivals to unite behind him to ensure DCP secures victory in the July 16 by-election.

DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala expressed satisfaction with how the nominations were conducted. He urged candidates who lost to accept the results and encouraged anyone with grievances to follow the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

Gabriel Gathure conceded defeat and pledged support for Ngotho in the interest of strengthening the DCP party.

Engineer Peter Karanja, who finished third with 3,919 votes, also accepted the outcome and congratulated Ngotho through his official Facebook page.

However, he raised concerns about the transparency of the nomination process, saying, “As the party says, the party has owners.”

Gachagua defends Uhuru, says retirement does not mean silence

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has come to the defence of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta amid rising criticism from Kenya Kwanza leaders regarding his involvement in local political affairs.

Speaking on Sunday during a church service in Kajiado County, Gachagua, who now leads the DCP party, asserted that Kenyatta retains his full constitutional rights to express his views, engage politically, and participate in national discourse, despite having left office.

“Uhuru still has an opinion, he still retains his constitutional rights to express his opinion, to have a political choice, to have freedom of expression, to have freedom of assembly, so please, leave Uhuru Kenyatta alone,” Gachagua said.

He condemned what he described as sustained attacks against the former Head of State, accusing Kenya Kwanza leaders of prioritising personal attacks over addressing governance challenges.

“Hawa viongozi wa Kenya Kwanza…kila mahali wanatukana Rais Uhuru Kenyatta…Uhuru Kenyatta ni kiongozi wetu, amestaafu, lakini si kusema because he is retired, his mind has retired,” he stated.

Gachagua urged Kenyatta not to be intimidated, emphasising that his continued engagement is vital for national governance and accountability.

“I want to ask my elder brother, Uhuru Kenyatta, not to be intimidated. You are a Kenyan, a senior citizen, and you have a constitutional right to express yourself,”

“Uhuru Kenyatta, I want to urge you, please, don’t chicken out. History will judge you very harshly if you get intimidated and shy away from assisting this country to get good governance.” he said.

The former Deputy President also indicated that the opposition would rally behind Kenyatta and might seek his support in future political efforts, including the next general election.

“Uhuru Kenyatta alifanya kazi yake, sasa yeye apumzike akiwa nyumbani. Lakini tunasema tukimuhitaji tutaita yeye. Tukiona William Ruto ametuweza, tutaita Uhuru Kenyatta kutusaidia,” he noted.

“If the situation so demands that we recall President Uhuru Kenyatta from retirement to come and help us to fix this country and get good governance, we shall do so. I will personally go to his home to ask for his help,” the former Deputy President added.

Gachagua also dismissed threats to withdraw Kenyatta’s retirement benefits, warning against what he termed political intimidation.

“Mwache kutisha Uhuru Kenyatta, eti mtatoa marupurupu yake akiendelea kuongea. Uhuru Kenyatta si maskini. Hata mkiondoa marupurupu yake, Uhuru ataendelea kukula na kunywa,” he stated.

“Mimi nataka kumwambia Rais Uhuru Kenyatta, mimi mwenyewe na watu wangu tutamlinda. Hatutakubali Uhuru Kenyatta atukanwe na mtu yeyote.”

He argued that retirement should not be equated with silence, noting that former presidents globally continue to play advisory and political roles after leaving office.

Gachagua cuts short U.S. tour, cites urgent party duties

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has cut short his United States tour to spearhead preparations for upcoming by-elections under his Democratic Change Party (DCP).

Gachagua, who had spent a month engaging Kenyans in the diaspora, said he was unable to visit several planned states, citing the need to return home to join the party’s campaign machinery.

In statement on X, he described the trip as successful and fulfilling but noted that the remaining engagements have been rescheduled to early next year.

“I regret being unable to visit the scheduled remaining States since I need to get back home to join our party, DCP, in preparation for the upcoming By-Elections in various parts of our country,” Gachagua said while extending apologies to organisers and diaspora Kenyans he was due to meet.

He commended DCP chapters in the US for planning, organisation and meticulous coordination during the tour.

The former DP said he will take a short break before returning to Kenya, noting that his itinerary will be made public as earlier promised.

Gachagua has been on an outreach mission to strengthen the DCP’s diaspora networks as the party positions itself ahead of the 2027 general election.

Gachagua tours Silicon Valley, says Kenya must not be left behind in tech

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has underscored the need for Kenya to keep up with global technology trends following his visit to Silicon Valley, the world’s biggest tech hub.

In a statement to X, Gachagua said his visit involved interacting with leading tech minds and exploring major tech companies, including Google and Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads.

“I have spent a splendid day in the Silicon Valley, firsthand the most creative tech innovations and interacting with the best tech minds in the world,” said Gachagua.

“I spent quality time at Google before taking a memorable ride in an AI driven jaguar limousine,” he added.

The DCP party leader said he was impressed by the innovations and the work of 35 young Kenyans in senior roles at the tech hub.

Gachagua added that the visit gave him ideas on where to find skilled young people to help improve Kenya’s ICT sector.

“I must say I have a pretty good idea where to look for skills mix and our Kenyan GenZs who are brilliant and tech-savvy when recruiting personnel to help us reboot the Ministry of ICT back home.”

The former DP has been in the U.S. since July, holding engagements with the Kenyan diaspora in various cities.
