South Africa bowler Rabada serving ban for positive drug test

South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada revealed on Saturday that he was serving a ban from cricket for recreational drug use.

Rabada, 29, returned to South Africa last month “for personal reasons” after playing only two matches for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League.

In a statement issued by the South African Cricketers’ Association, Rabada said his absence was due to “an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug” which he said resulted in him serving a provisional suspension.

The statement did not specify the length of the suspension or when Rabada would play again but Rabada said: “I am looking forward to returning to the game I love playing.”

Gujarat have four fixtures remaining in the league phase of the IPL, starting with a match against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday. The team is also well placed to qualify for the play-offs after winning seven of their 10 fixtures.

Rabada is South Africa’s leading fast bowler. He has taken 327 wickets in 70 Tests and is expected to play a key role for South Africa in the World Test Championship final against Australia starting at Lord’s in London on June 11.

He said in his statement: “I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me. It goes beyond my personal aspirations.”

He added: “This moment will not define me. I will keep doing what I have always done, continuously working hard and playing with passion and devotion to my craft.”

Zimbabwe opt to bat first in second Bangladesh Test

Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine opted to bat in the second Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram on Monday, after taking a stunning win in the two match series.

Bangladesh, who seek to bounce back and prove their batting mettle, brought back opening batter Anamul Haque.

The right-handed batter smashed four centuries in the ongoing Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, a 50-over domestic event, which earned him a Test recall after three years.

Bangladesh made three changes — bringing in Anamul Haque, Nayeem Hasan and Tanzim Hasan to replace Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Nahid Rana, and Khaled Ahmed.

Right-arm pacer Tanzim, who has 25 wickets in 16 first class matches, is getting his first Test cap for the hosts.

Zimbabwe also have a debutant in leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa, who bagged 71 wickets in 20 first class matches.

Zimbabwe also added Tafadzwa Tsiga to replace Victor Nyauchi and Nyasha Mayavo.

Zimbabwe celebrated a determined three wicket win over Bangladesh in the first Test in Sylhet on Wednesday.

Bangladesh failed to prove their batting mettle as they were bundled out for under 200 runs in the first innings in the series opener.

Bangladesh: Anamul Haque, Shadman Islam, Najmul Hossain Shanto (captain), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Jaker Ali (wk), Taijul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Nayeem Hasan, Tanzim Hasan.

Zimbabwe: Ben Curran, Brian Bennett, Nick Welch, Sean Williams, Craig Ervine (captain), Wessly Madhevere, Tafadzawa Tsiga (wk), Wellington Masakadza, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, Vincent Masekesa.

  • Zimbabwe on top in first Test after Bangladesh out for 191

Zimbabwe on top in first Test after Bangladesh out for 191

Zimbabwe finished the first day of the first Test in a commanding position at 67-0 after an inspired bowling performance dismissed Bangladesh for 191 runs on Sunday.

The visitors’ opening pair of Brian Bennett, unbeaten on 40 off 37 balls, and Ben Curran (17) took the attack to Bangladesh’s bowlers in the 14.1 overs they faced before bad light stopped play.

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored 40, earlier won the toss and opted to bat first on a pace-friendly wicket.

But his batters failed to capitalise on the decision and none of them, including top-scorer Mominul Haque (56) or Jakir Ali, who made 28, were able to turn good starts into decent Test scores.

The Zimbabwe attack bowled aggressive and disciplined lines, with paceman Blessing Muzarabani and left-arm orthodox Wellington Masakadza both taking three wickets.

They were assisted by Victor Nyauchi and Wessley Madhevere, who shared the other four wickets.

Nyauchi set the tone for the visitors, sending back Bangladesh’s openers early in the first session with only 32 runs on the board.

Shadman Islam was the first to fall for 12 in the ninth over, with Nyauchi also removing Mahmudul Hasan Joy (14) in his next over.

A third-wicket partnership of 66 runs between Haque and Shanto gave the home team’s score some respectability.

Bangladesh’s relatively inexperienced pace attack of Hasan Mahmud, Nahid Rana and Khalid Rana couldn’t find their lines against Bennett, who hit six fours.

Trailing only by 124 runs, Zimbabwe have a rare opportunity to set a formidable first innings total with the pitch expected to be better for the batters on the second day.

Bangladesh are ranked ninth and Zimbabwe are at the bottom of the 12-team ICC Test rankings after a disappointing year and both teams are hoping for a better start to the long season ahead.

The hosts have been formidable on the slow and spin-friendly home pitches but have several veterans missing.

The second and final Test of the series will be played in Chattogram from April 28.

    Day 1 scores:

Bangladesh: 191 all out (Mominul Haque 56, Najmul Hossain Shanto 40; Blessing Muzarabani 3-50, Wellington Masakadza 3-21

Zimbabwe: 67-0 Brian Bennett 40, Ben Curran 17; Hasan Mahmud 0-16

Toss: Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat first.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss Sunday and chose to bat at Sylhet in first of two Tests against Zimbabwe.

On a wicket expected to aid the new ball, Bangladesh opted for three seam bowlers and only two spinners, with young pacer Nahid Rana, 22, expected to lead the attack.

Zimbabwe are relying heavily on the experience of Sean Williams, Wellington Masakadza, Blessing Muzarabani and skipper Craig Ervine as both teams start their new ICC Test Championship campaign.

The second and final Test will be played in Chattogram from April 28.

Bangladesh ex-captain Tamim Iqbal recovering after heart attack

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal regained consciousness and was speaking to family members after suffering a major heart attack during a domestic match, cricket officials told AFP on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club in a match of the 50-over Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League when he was rushed to a nearby hospital after severe chest pain on Monday.

“He is now better. He talked to his family members and also walked briefly at the hospital,” club official Tariqul Islam said.

Mohammedan physiotherapist Enamul Haque said Tamim was in a stable condition and would likely be transferred to another medical facility soon.

“We had to go to hospital quickly to save his life, and luckily we did that,” Enamul told AFP.

Tamim was in critical condition when he was rushed to hospital, Razeeb Hasan, the medical director at the facility where Tamim received treatment, told reporters on Monday.

He also said Tamim had to undergo surgery to implant stents to clear an artery blockage.

News of Tamim’s health crisis saw an outpouring of support from the cricketing world.

“Please pray that my brother Tamim recovers quickly and returns to the game!” long-time teammate Shakib Al Hasan wrote in a social media post.

Tamim’s heart attack came the same day as Shakib’s 38th birthday, but the all-rounder said he was unable to enjoy the occasion because of the news.

Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh likewise offered his “prayers and wishes”.

“You’ve faced tough opponents before and come out stronger, this will be no different. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Stay strong,” Yuvraj wrote on social media.

Tamim represented Bangladesh in 391 matches across formats between 2007 and 2023, and was their one-day captain.

He scored more than 15,000 runs and is the only Bangladeshi to record centuries in all three international formats.

Bangladesh crumble for 146, India need 95 to sweep series

Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets apiece as Bangladesh crumbled to 146 all out on the final day of the rain-hit second Test on Tuesday, leaving India needing 95 runs to sweep the series 2-0.

Bangladesh resumed their second innings on 26-2 in Kanpur, 26 runs behind, but the batting fell apart during the first session, with opener Shadman Islam top scoring on 50.

Mushfiqur Rahim frustrated India as the lunch break was delayed for the final wicket. He was last man out when Bumrah bowled him for 37.

Off-spinner Ashwin broke through in the third over of the day when he had first-innings centurion Mominul Haque caught at leg slip by KL Rahul for two.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto joined fellow left-hander Shadman and edged Bangladesh into a slim lead with a 55-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Left-arm spinner Jadeja, who had taken his 300th Test wicket on Monday, struck in his first over of the day when he bowled Najmul, who had made 19.

Shadman reached his fifty off 97 balls but fell almost immediately after to fast bowler Akash Deep.

Jadeja also picked up the wicket of veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, caught and bowled without scoring, in what could be the former captain’s last walk Test for Bangladesh.

Shakib, 37, announced his international retirement ahead of the match, which could be his swansong if he is unable to return home for a scheduled South Africa series.

Bangladesh were bowled out for 233 in their first innings earlier on day four two-and-a-half days had been lost to the weather.

India then batted at a blistering pace as they declared on 285-9 from just 34.4 overs as they attempted to force a result after Saturday’s and Sunday were lost to rain.

India won the opener of the two-match series by 280 runs.
