CAF is open to investigations into corruption allegations, says Motsepe

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, Patrice Motsepe, has said they welcome any investigation into corruption allegations at the organisation.

Motsepe said this on Wednesday during his visit to Senegal, the first of its kind since the 2025 AFCON final debacle, which has elicited many reactions, with the Senegalese government calling for an investigation of the CAF officials for corruption.

Senegal’s government last month demanded an investigation into corruption after the ‌country was stripped of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title by the CAF Appeal Board, and the trophy was awarded to the final opponents, Morocco.

Motsepe met with officials from the Senegalese Football Federation and Senegal president Bassirou Diomaye Faye on Wednesday, where he urged unity following the fallout from the final.

“I would welcome any investigation into corruption at CAF, be it by a government or any institution,” Motsepe told reporters. “In fact, I would encourage it. We will give them our full cooperation.I have been told there were problems in the past, and we intervened. It is not just in football but in business and politics too. We cannot give our children the perception that if you want to ‌succeed in life, be corrupt. There has to be zero tolerance for corruption.” Motsepe said

Motsepe also denied claims of favouritism to Morocco in the CAF appeal’s case.

Senegal has filed an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport challenging the CAF appeals committee’s decision of declaring Morocco as AFCON 2025 champions.

The Confederation of African Football President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, is to visit Senegal today and meet the Senegalese Head of State, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and the Senegalese Football Federation President, Abdoulaye Fall.

He will engage in discussions with Senegal’s Head of State, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and  Abdoulaye Fall, the leader of the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football.

The visit is reportedly intended to defuse tensions, renew communication, and avert any further developments that could negatively impact the cohesion and standing of African football.

Insiders reveal that CAF is committed to finding a fair resolution that upholds legal standards while addressing the mounting concerns of fans and officials.

Motsepe’s involvement signifies the critical nature of the situation and the immediate requirement for top-level intervention.

This marks Motsepe’s inaugural official visit to Senegal following the CAF appeals committee’s decision to revoke the 2025 AFCON trophy from the Senegalese team, subsequently awarding it to Morocco.

CAF President Motsepe says he will respect CAS’s decision on the Senegal vs Morocco AFCON final fiasco

The Confederation of African Football President Patrice Motsepe has reaffirmed his commitment to respect decisions and rulings by independent committees, which are key in the governance of the game on the continent.

“I’ve been informed of the ruling by the CAF Appeal Board concerning the appeal by Morocco relating to the Afcon-Morocco 2025 final match. I previously expressed my extreme disappointment with the incidents that took place at the final match.” said Motsepe

Speaking in his official statement yesterday on the Appeal Board decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 AFCON title and declare Morocco as champions, Motsepe said he respects the outcome and lauded Senegal for making an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), adding that he will accept the decision which will be delivered.

In its ruling, the appeal board overturned the disciplinary committee’s earlier ruling of confirming Senegal as champions and imposing hefty fines on both Morocco and Senegal following what transpired in the 18th January final in Rabat between the two nations.

“The CAF Disciplinary Board took one decision. The CAF appeals board took a totally different position. I’m told that Senegal is going to appeal, which is very important. Every one of the 54 nations in Africa has a right to pursue their appeals and their advanced interests, not only at the highest level in Africa, in CAF, but also in the highest body, which is the CAS. We will adhere to and respect the decision that’s taken at the highest level.”Motsepe stated

The Appeal Board ruling has sparked mixed reactions across the world.
