Sugarcane farmers get extra Ksh 200 per tonne after price review 

Sugar millers are expected to pay farmers a minimum of Ksh 5,500 per tonne for cane deliveries after price adjustment by the government.

The 3.8pc increase follows a review by the Kenya Sugar Board to raise official came prices.

“Based on the prevailing ex-factory sugar prices, over the past three months (February 2025-April 2025) the price of cane has been increased from the current Ksh 5,300 per tonne to Ksh 5,500 per tonne effective 26th May 2025,” said Dr Kipronoh Ronoh,  Agriculture Principal Secretary.

The revised rate has been approved by the Cane Pricing Committee and will take effect from Monday next week.

This price adjustment is part of broader ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the sugar industry and ensuring fair compensation for farmers.

In a directive issued to all 15 licensed millers, including recently leased state-owned factories Dr Ronoh emphasized the importance of adhering to the new minimum price.

“You are hereby requested to adhere to the minimum cane prices while making payments to farmers on time,” he stated.

Dr Ronoh further instructed all millers to make timely payments to farmers, reinforcing the government’s commitment to safeguarding farmer welfare and improving livelihoods in sugarcane-growing regions.
