Sakaja launches solar-powered cold storage project in 43 markets
Nairobi county government has started a pilot program that will see all 43 markets within Nairobi installed with solar powered cold storage facilities to minimise fresh produce losses.
Speaking while inspecting the pilot program in City Park market in Parklands, Governor Johnson Sakaja said his administration will establish similar units in other markets within the Nairobi to help traders safely store their perishable foods.
The facility features an 18-kilowatt peak (kWp) in-built solar system designed to reduce organic waste, improve food storage, and promote sustainability.
Sakaja further stated that the initiative aligns with his administration’s broader efforts to modernise Nairobi’s markets and enhance food security for the citizens of Nairobi county.
The project, supported by development partners, is expected to benefit about 160 traders daily and divert over 100 tonnes of organic waste from landfills each year.
