Sakaja directs evacuation of residents affected by floods

Governor Johnson Sakaja has directed the evacuation of more than 3,000 Nairobi residents affected the ongoing rains to temporary shelters.

Speaking after touring areas which have been the hardest hit by the rains, Governor Sakaja said that an estimated 60,000 people mostly women and children have been severely affected following devastating flash floods.

“Although we are on the brink of a humanitarian crisis, there is a large-scale coordinated response operation ongoing under my strong leadership. Today we intend to evacuate 3,000 people to shelter centres,” he said.

According to Sakaja, four lives have been lost and six reported missing.

The areas have been adversely affected include; Kibra, Lindi, Mathare 4A and Mathare North, Baba Dogo, Githurai and Zimmerman.

The Governor also directed all Private Service Providers (PSPs) to ensure all waste collected is taken to Dandora dumpsite warning those who will be found culpable of doing the opposite will face sanctions.

He has also suspended the excavations along riparian areas with immediate effect and directed those living along riverbeds to re- locate with immediate effect.
