Police Constable gets 30 years for killing his superior in Nakuru

The High Court in Nakuru has sentenced police Constable Jackson Kipkoech Konga to 30 years in prison for the fatal shooting of his superior, Sergeant Christopher Kimeli.

Justice Julius Nyangea sentenced Konga on Thursday after finding him guilty of murdering the senior officer on August 8, 2023, at the K9 Unit in Nakuru East Sub-County.

The prosecution called ten witnesses who offered compelling testimony that helped the court piece together the events that led to the deadly confrontation.

According to witness accounts, the incident began with an argument inside the report office.

Konga reportedly became enraged over what he perceived to be demeaning remarks from Sergeant Kimeli.

After cocking his firearm, he walked out of the office, only for the sergeant to follow him. Konga then turned and fired at his superior, killing him on the spot.

In his testimony before the court, the accused admitted to an earlier confrontation that same morning.

The disagreement stemmed from an order issued by Sergeant Kimeli, who directed that two suspects detained overnight at the K9 Unit be taken to the report office instead of being transferred to Nakuru Central Police Station.

The decision, issued during a routine inspection, reportedly angered Konga and sparked the fatal dispute.

While delivering his judgment, Justice Nyangea acknowledged there was an element of provocation but stressed that it did not justify the accused’s reaction.

The judge concluded that Konga had acted with intent to kill, noting that the nature of the weapon used demonstrated a clear understanding that death was a likely consequence.
