Ombudsman to help Siaya County develop access to information policy

The Commission on Administrative Justice (Ombudsman) has pledged support to the Siaya County government in developing an access to information policy to enhance transparency and service delivery.

Speaking in Siaya town, Ombudsman chairperson Charles Dulo said the county was already making progress in drafting a policy aligned with the Access to Information Act.

To expedite the process, the commission will second experts to help finalise the document to ensure residents can easily access important information.

“With the commission’s support, the county will be able to enact an access to information policy, making it easier for residents to obtain the information they need,” Dulo stated.

Dulo, who earlier led his team in a courtesy call on Governor James Orengo, said the commission would also assist in formulating a grievance management policy, which the county currently lacks.

“We have reviewed some of the policies under development, and we are encouraged by the county’s commitment, particularly on climate change matters,” he noted.

Siaya County Executive Committee Member for Environment Prof. Jacqueline Oduol, acknowledged the need for a formal grievance and redress policy despite existing mechanisms.

“We appreciate the support from the commission to strengthen our grievance-handling system. Most importantly, we need a policy in place as we currently do not have one,” Prof. Oduol said.
