NTSA urges road users to exercise caution as schools close for holidays

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has urged all road users to exercise caution as school children travel home for holidays.

In a statement, the authority called on all stakeholders within the road transport sector, including law enforcement, parents, school management, transport service providers, and students, to collaborate closely to ensure safe passage for children.

“Close supervision of children and the identification of safe vehicles to transport them will play a critical role in ensuring their safety,” NTSA stated.

NTSA further warned against reckless driving saying stringent actions will be taken against errant drivers.

In the past six months, the authority has suspended a total of 288 driving licenses while 420 drivers have been subjected to retesting following reports of driver misconduct, speed violations, and safety compliance issues, detected through the Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS) and public reports.

The authority has also called on the public to report any instances of dangerous driving to the police in a bid to prevent further accidents during the Easter holiday.

“NTSA’s efforts will be further strengthened through close collaboration with the National Police Service during the Easter festivities. The focus will be on monitoring driver and conductor behavior, ensuring vehicle safety compliance, and conducting road safety education through the Usalama Barabarani initiative.”
