Kenya human rights activists stage protests over Besigye detention

A section of human rights groups in Kenya, led by Amnesty International Kenya and Vocal Africa, has organised protests in solidarity with veteran opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is facing treason charges.

The peaceful demonstrations kicked off Monday morning at the Aga Khan Walk in Nairobi’s CBD, to demand the release of Besigye, who has been in detention since he was taken back to Uganda to face a military trial following his arrest last November in Kenya.

The 68-year-old, who appeared frail, ended a hunger strike at Luzira Maximum Security Prison on Friday after the Ugandan government decided to charge him in a civilian court.

However, he remains in custody as new treason charges have been filed against him and his political associate, Hajj Obeid Lutale. The case was adjourned to March 7.

The civil society groups plan to march to the Parliament Buildings before proceeding to the Uganda High Commission to present a petition.

Meanwhile, Besigye’s legal team is working to expedite a bail application in the High Court to secure his release so he can seek medical attention.

Calls for his release have intensified, with Kenyans and Ugandans rallying on X under the hashtag #FreeKizzaBesigye.
