Kenyan Parliament lauded for approving IGAD treaty

Kenya has approved the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Treaty, becoming the latest member state to endorse the agreement aimed at boosting regional cooperation and development.

The IGAD Secretariat, through Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, hailed the move as a significant step toward consolidating the regional bloc’s institutional foundation.

In a statement, Dr. Workneh thanked the Government and People of Kenya for their commitment to multilateralism and regional integration.

“The ratification of the IGAD Treaty by the Parliament of Kenya is a commendable step toward consolidating our institutional foundation,” stated Dr. Workneh.

“It enhances our collective capacity to address transboundary challenges and advance our shared aspirations for peace, stability, and sustainable development,” he added.

Kenya joins Djibouti, Ethiopia, and South Sudan in approving the revised treaty, which updates IGAD’s framework to reflect its expanded mandate.

The treaty reinforces IGAD’s role in addressing issues such as conflict prevention, climate adaptation, public health, economic integration, and digital governance.

Dr. Workneh urged other IGAD Member States to finalise their ratification processes “in the spirit of regional solidarity and institutional coherence.”

The IGAD Secretariat pledged to continue working closely with all Member States to fully implement the treaty and drive forward the organisation’s vision of a peaceful, prosperous, and integrated region.
