Kenya welcomes partnership to build counter terrorism financing capacity
Kenya has welcomed a new partnership with the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) aimed at boosting the country’s ability to combat terrorism financing and money laundering.
The initiative which was launched in Nairobi with the announcement of a specialized training course that will equip stakeholders with skills to detect and disrupt illicit financial flows sustaining terrorist organizations.
The Counter Terrorism Financing training will enable stakeholders involved in combating terrorism to detect and disrupt illicit financial flows that support the lifelines of terrorist organizations through the combination of legal knowledge, modern technologies and international cooperation.
Major General John Nkoimo, General Officer Commanding Central Command emphasized the importance of a multi-agency approach in tackling terrorism financing.
“The multi-agency nature of the course portrays that the fight against terrorism financing must be integrated and coordinated at all sectors of governments in order to harness comparative advantage of different Ministries, Departments and Agencies.” He noted.
The training slated for December 2025, will include representatives from legislative and executive bodies, financial and regulatory institutions, and civil society organizations.
Thematic areas to be tackled include, the legal framework; sources and means of terrorism financing; financial analysis and detection mechanisms; international and regional cooperation; prevention strategies, awareness and training programs, and promoting a culture of reporting suspicious activities.
Manager of Operations Section Counter Terrorism Financing Department of the Islamic Military Country Terrorism Coalition, Hatem Alqahtani said the course goes beyond standard training.
“This training is more than capacity building but it is a strategic investment in skills, networks, and institutional resilience needed to detect, disrupt, and dismantle illicit financial flows of terrorist groups and will immensely contribute to Kenya’s national capacity to independently deliver future courses in counter terrorism financing.” Said Alqahtani.
