Organ trafficking: Mediheal faults MOH report as misleading

The management of Mediheal Group of Hospitals in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, is faulting the Ministry of Health for failing to provide an official report on its kidney transplant operations.

The hospital’s founder, Dr. Swarup Mishra, together with his lawyer Katwa Kigen, has refuted claims of organ trafficking and stated that the facility has yet to receive the findings of a probe conducted by an independent investigative committee on organ tissue transplant.

The hospital further denied social media claims of “insufficient documentation,” saying it submitted all records, including details of 476 transplants conducted since 2018.

Addressing a press conference Tuesday in Nairobi, they termed such claims as misleading, meant to tarnish the image of the hospital.

The hospital now says it is being unfairly judged before any formal findings have been submitted.

Dr. Mishra maintains that the hospital has never been linked to any case of kidney transplant fraud, noting that they conduct their transplant procedures ethically with prior consent from the donors and their verified next of kin.

A task force appointed by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale to conduct the probe recommended the prosecution of the facility’s founder and chairman, Swarup Mishra.
