Health ministry gears up for second polio vaccination drive

The Ministry of Health is gearing up for the second round of polio vaccination drive slated for this weekend.
According to the Ministry, the oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) Supplemental Immunization Activity (SIA) Campaign is scheduled from 7th to 11th October 2023.
Approximately 3.1 million children in 10 counties of Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, Machakos, Kitui, Tana River, Garissa, Lamu, Wajir, and Mandera are targeted.
Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, from the State Department of Public Health and Professional Standards, is presiding over a media and stakeholder meeting as part of our advocacy efforts to ensure comprehensive nOPV2 coverage in the targeted areas.
The campaign is in collaboration with Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) and other development partners.
The first campaign surpassed the 1.8 target and reached 1.9 million.
“There are still more children we have missed, and we must reach them in this nOPV2 campaign,” said Dr. Emmanuel Okungu, Head of Disease Surveillance and Response Unit.
