Governor Wavinya leads multi-agency flood rescue operation in Mavoko

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti Wednesday spearheaded a joint effort involving multiple agencies to rescue and evacuate hundreds of residents in Mavoko whose homes were marooned by floods following heavy rainfall Tuesday night.

The torrential downpour led to severe flooding in various areas including Graceland Estate, Kasuitu, Kwa Mang’eli, and Kicheko slums, displacing numerous families and causing extensive property damage.

Emergency responders from Machakos County, along with personnel from the Kenya Red Cross Society, National Disaster Management Centre, Kenya Navy, and the National Police Service, collaborated in a day-long operation to assist affected residents.

According to residents, the flooding caused significant losses as household belongings were destroyed, marking one of the worst flooding disasters witnessed in the region in the last six decades.

Governor Wavinya announced the establishment of a temporary rescue center in Mavoko to accommodate and support victims with essential supplies such as food, bedding, and medication.

She urged residents living near or along the banks of River Athi to evacuate and seek refuge at the designated rescue center for their safety.

Furthermore, Governor Wavinya highlighted the need for collaboration between the County Government and the National Government to address development challenges, particularly concerning private developers who have flouted physical planning regulations.

“Some developers have disregarded regulations by constructing houses and estates in riparian areas, contributing to the current crisis,” she remarked.
