CS Duale: Over 24 million Kenyans enrolled under Taifa Care

Kenya’s journey toward Universal Health Coverage has hit a major milestone, with over 24 million Kenyans now enrolled in the Taifa-Care programme under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Speaking during a media briefing at SHA headquarters after addressing members of the staff, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the strong uptake reflects the government’s commitment to delivering quality, affordable healthcare to every Kenyan.

“Tomorrow, we head to Nakuru to keep the momentum going. No one will be left behind,” he said.

Key highlights:

• 5 million people have received treatment through the Primary Healthcare Fund.
• 2 million patients have accessed specialized services under the Social Health Insurance Fund.
• Over 550,000 mothers supported through maternal health coverage.
• Ksh 6.82 billion in claims already paid, with another Ksh 1.5 billion under verification.

CS Duale assured staff and the public that the ongoing SHA recruitment is fully compliant with the SHI Act, 2023 and guided by transparency, merit, and fairness. Former NHIF staff are being prioritized, with guarantees of job retention or redeployment at existing terms.

“We are building a people-first institution. No public servant will be left behind, and no fraudulent credentials will be tolerated,” he added.

The CS was joined by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr Ouma Oluga, SHA Chair Dr Abdi Mohamed and CEO Dr Mercy Mwangangi (SHA), Eng. Anthony Lenaiyara (DHA) and senior officials from SHA.
