Court releases 19 Olkalou protest suspects on bond, cites lack of evidence

All 19 suspects linked to the unrest during the Gen Demos in Olkalou town, Nyandarua County, have been released on a personal bond of Ksh 100,000 each, along with two sureties of an equal amount.

The minor among them will be released on a personal bond guaranteed by their parent, also amounting to Ksh 100,000.

The case will be mentioned on July 21, 2025, to confirm the progress of the investigations. The ruling was delivered by Principal Magistrate Judicaster Nthuku.

In a sworn affidavit, investigating officer Corporal Richard Limo requested additional time to record witness statements, arguing that releasing the suspects could lead to interference with ongoing investigations.

However, in her ruling, Principal Magistrate Nthuku stated that the prosecution, led by Jefrey Langat Kipyegon, had failed to provide sufficient grounds to justify holding the suspects for the 21 days requested.

Following the court’s decision, defense lawyers Nderi Ndiani and Kiragu Wathuta praised the ruling, commending the court for upholding justice.

They asserted that the prosecution had not presented adequate evidence to justify the arrest of the 19 individuals or link them to the destruction of property during the June 25th demonstrations.
