Cabinet approves construction of a new 60,000-capacity stadium for AFCON 2027

Kenyan Cabinet has approved the construction of a 60,000-seat stadium to stage the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations finals, which will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

This was agreed upon and approved by the cabinet in its October 3rd meeting at State House Nairobi, which was chaired by President William Ruto.

The government has also earmarked renovations for the Moi International Sports Centre-Kasarani, Nyayo Stadium, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, which will be used during the 36th edition of the AFCON finals.

Each of the three east African nations will set aside at least two stadiums with 40,000+ capacity for staging the AFCON matches and the other two training stadiums for training with a minimum of 15,000 seats.

Ivory Coast will stage next year’s AFCON finals before handing over to Morocco, which will host the 2025 edition.
