Body of University student killed while fishing in Lake Victoria recovered

The body of Duncan Otenga, a third-year student at Meru University, was recovered from Lake Victoria on Wednesday, four days after he was killed while fishing in Homa Bay County.

Otenga, who was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, met his death on Sunday while fishing with a group of men in the lake. Authorities indicated that he was hit on the head before he drowned.

According to preliminary investigations, the student became unconscious and later drowned.

His family has since called for justice, expressing frustration over the silence of elected leaders from Homa Bay regarding persistent conflicts on the lake.

The incident has sparked fresh concern over recurring disputes among fishermen operating in Lake Victoria.

The County Government of Homa Bay has responded by organizing a meeting aimed at resolving ongoing tensions in the area.

County Executive for Fisheries, Sarah Malit, emphasized that the lake is a shared resource and warned that disputes often arise when fishermen from different beaches encroach on each other’s fishing zones.

She stressed the importance of preventing conflict within the lake’s waters.

Local authorities, including Homa Bay Township Assistant Chief Salim Nyauke, confirmed that the matter is under active investigation.
