Maestro movie: Leonard Bernstein’s Family defend actor over Maestro nose row

The family of Leonard Bernstein have defended actor Bradley Cooper in a row over his biopic of the late composer.

The first trailer for Maestro, which Cooper directs and stars in, was released on Wednesday, this week.

It attracted some criticism over the size of Cooper’s nose, which some social media users said played up to offensive Jewish stereotypes.

But Bernstein’s family said they were “perfectly fine” with Cooper using make-up to “amplify” his appearance.

There has also been criticism that a Jewish actor was not cast to play the West Side Story composer.

“It breaks our hearts to see any misrepresentations or misunderstandings of [Cooper’s] efforts,” wrote Jamie, Alexander and Nina Bernstein in a statement posted online.

“It happens to be true that Leonard Bernstein had a nice, big nose. Bradley chose to use make-up to amplify his resemblance, and we’re perfectly fine with that. We’re also certain that our dad would have been fine with it as well.”

They continued: “Any strident complaints around this issue strike us above all as disingenuous attempts to bring a successful person down a notch – a practice we observed all too often perpetrated on our own father.

“At all times during the making of this film, we could feel the profound respect and yes, the love that Bradley brought to his portrait of Leonard Bernstein and his wife, our mother Felicia. We feel so fortunate to have had this experience with Bradley, and we can’t wait for the world to see his creation.”

Bernstein’s family added that Cooper had “included the three of us along every step of his amazing journey as he made his film about our father”.

“We were touched to the core to witness the depth of his commitment, his loving embrace of our father’s music, and the sheer open-hearted joy he brought to his exploration.”

When the first images of Cooper were seen last year, the Hollywood Reporter’s film critic Daniel Feinberg said Cooper’s appearance could be “problematic”, suggesting the movie featured “ethnic cosplay”.

Writing on Instagram, English actress Tracy-Ann Oberman, who is Jewish, compared Cooper apparently using a prosthetic nose to the use of blackface makeup.

“If Bradley Cooper can’t do it through the power [of] acting alone then don’t cast him – get a Jewish actor,” she wrote.

Binyomin Gilbert, a spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism, said it was “astonishing that nobody thought twice about sticking a big nose on a non-Jewish actor playing a Jew”.

“The filmmakers here need to show that they understand why this is a problem,” he said. “A failure to do so would indicate that there is a double standard when it comes to the portrayal of Jews on screen.”

Maestro is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival next month, before being released on Netflix in December.

Another film scheduled for release in the coming months, Golda, has attracted similar controversy.

Dame Helen Mirren will play former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in Guy Nattiv’s film, which will be released in US cinemas at the end of this month.

Last year, actress Maureen Lipman told the Jewish Chronicle she “disagreed” with Dame Helen’s casting “because the Jewishness of the character is so integral”.

  • Netflix releases trailer to Bradley Cooper movie “Maestro”

Netflix releases trailer to Bradley Cooper movie “Maestro”

The trailer, however, has sparked debate over the use of a nose prosthetic.

International streamer Netflix has released the trailer for the upcoming movie about American conductor, composer and pianist Leonard Bernstein starring Bradley Cooper in the lead role.

“Maestro” will be Cooper’s second directorial effort after “A Star is Born,” in which he starred alongside Lady Gaga. He is also credited as a producer in this film and will star alongside Carey Mulligan.

Set to debut globally on the platform on December 20, the film will follow Bernstein and his 25-year marriage to Felicia Montealegre played by Mulligan.

    “Jewface” Controversy

In the hours since its release, the trailer has sparked an online debate about the use of a nose prosthetic which many claim plays into harmful Jewish stereotypes and that the one Cooper is wearing was exaggerated for the film.

‘It seems completely unnecessary to have gone in that direction given the uncanny resemblance,’ one user said ‘the real Leonard Bernstein did not have the funny nose that Bradley Cooper is wearing in Maestro.’

One of the biggest critics is Sarah Silverman, who ironically also stars in this film. In 2021, Silverman criticised the casting of Kathryn Han who is not Jewish to play Joan Rivers.

Sharing her thoughts on a podcast, Silverman said, “Jewface” is ‘defined as when a non-Jew portrays a Jew with the Jewishness front and centre, often with makeup or changing of features, big fake nose, all the New York-y or Yiddish-y inflexion’

She further asked, “In a time when the importance of representation is seen as so essential and so front and center, why does ours constantly get breached even today in the thick of it?”

The movie also stars Gideon Glick, Gabe Fazio, Matt Bomer, Sarah Silverman, William Hill, Nick Blaemire, Eric Parkinson, Oscar Pavlo, Tim Rogan and Mallory Portnoy. Maya Hawke plays Bernstein’s daughter Jamie. Sam Nivola plays his son, Alexander.

Alongside Cooper, producers include Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.

Winnie Odinga celebrates Chef Mahlia as she breaks new home-cooking record

Winnie Odinga is celebrating Chef Mahlia as she breaks new home-cooking record. Mahlia had aimed to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest home-cooking marathon at 90 hours.

Odinga, who dropped in on the chef celebrated her on Instagram saying, “History in the making! Chef Mahlia has already thrown down a world record! Now let’s get to 90 hours just to make the point.”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Cv7QB6FIGeP/

The previous record for a home-cooking marathon was set by US-based chef Rickey Lumpkin at 68 hours, 30 minutes, and 1 second in 2018. By Monday morning, Ms Mohammed had already been cooking for more than the record of 68 hours, 30 minutes and one second.

While Chef Mahlia had announced her intentions earlier this year, shortly after Hilda Baci set the Guinness World Record for marathon cooking with 93 hours 11 minutes, she says the record she is pursuing differs from the one set by the Nigerian chef.

“I will be cooking nonstop for the longest home kitchen cooking marathon. That is a different title from what Chef Hilda was cooking,” she said on her YouTube channel.

Mahlia’s efforts still need to be certified by the Guinness World Records organisation before she can officially unseat the current title holder, Rickey Lumpkin.

This is Mahila’s third attempt at setting the record, which she has been streaming live on her TikTok channel.

Bollywood superstar Alia Bhatt makes Hollywood debut alongside Gal Gadot

“…Your first film chooses you.” – Alia

Popular Hindi star Alia Bhatt finally makes her debut in Hollywood alongside Gal Gadot in Netflix’s new movie “Heart of Stone.”

Alia, who has starred in a number of chart-topping movies including “Gangubai Kathiawadi”, said that this was her first English-language film.

In an interview with AP Entertainment, Alia said, “Your first film chooses you… Technically, this is my first English-language movie. It chose me and I’m so happy it did.”

“Heart of Stone” which also stars Jamie Dornan is a globe-trotting spy thriller that premiered on Netflix globally on August 12. In it, Bhatt plays the role of a tech prodigy named Keya. Contrary to her other roles in which she plays the lead, she was happy to play a supporting role for the film— as long as it had substance to it.

“The way I judge it is if you take the character out of the story and you still have a film, then that character’s not important,” Bhatt said.

Her role in the film is only one feather in her successful cap; she welcomed her first child this year (she was pregnant during the filming of the movie), attended her first Met Gala and was named the first Indian house ambassador for the luxury label Gucci. She also had a small part in the Telugu-language action epic “RRR,” which became an international sensation.
