MOH developing National SRH strategy for adolescents and young people

The ministry of health is in the process of developing a national strategy meant to promote positive reproductive health behaviour among adolescents and young people.

A team of technical experts drawn from the ministry of health and stakeholders have been putting final touches on the National Social and Behavioural Change (SBC) Strategy for Adolescents and Young People Sexual and Reproductive Health which seeks to address existing gaps through integrated SBC approaches.

According to Mary Magubo, the Social and Behavioural Change and communications coordinator at the Division of Reproductive and Maternal health, the strategy envisions innovative SRH services that will resonate with adolescents and young people aged between 10 – 24 years.

“The ministry of health recognizes that insufficient access to comprehensive and accurate age appropriate information about Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) has significant and far-reaching consequences which include increased rates of teenage pregnancies, new HIV and HPV infections, gender-based violence (GBV), and other risks related to ASRH.” Observed Magubo.

Alfayo Wamburi, Social and Behavioural Change advisor at Breakthrough ACTION Kenya, one of the partners supporting development of the strategy, says adolescents are likely to face a range of health and social challenges adding that there is a need for health services to be responsive to the needs of adolescents and young people.

The social and behavioural change strategy, which is in the final stages of development, is targeted at increasing sexual and reproductive health knowledge and skills among adolescents and young people, creating demand and acceptability for age appropriate SRH services among adolescent and young people and strengthening the healthcare system to be more responsive to their needs by fostering an enabling environment through multi-sectoral collaboration.

Government resolves Dongo Kundu Land Compensation standoff

The State Department for Investment Promotion has stepped up efforts to operationalize the 3000-acre Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone in Mombasa.

Investment Principal Secretary Abubakar Hassan says they have successfully resolved the land compensation row involving the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) during a multi-agency meeting to check the preparedness of the SEZ to admit investors.

The meeting at the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in Mombasa brought together Managing Directors from KPA, the Special Economic Zone Authority (SEZA), the National Land Commission (NLC) and officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Last year, the 1.4 billion shillings compensation plan was halted to allow for an audit of the list of those affected by the project to weed out non-residents from the about 1759 beneficiaries.

Hassan said after an assessment, the project is ready to kick off with all verified PAPs set to receive compensation and be resettled.

“There has been a small delay on the issue of the PAPs but the queries that were raised before have been resolved. In the next two months that PAPs issue will be no more,” stated PS Hassan, encouraging investors to apply for slots in the SEZ.

The Head of State, PS Hassan noted, had directed that Dongo Kundu SEZ be operationalized quickly to facilitate investors entry.

The multi-billion shillings Dongo Kundu bypass is at 90 per cent completion. The dual carriageway project will play a pivotal role in the SEZ by facilitating the transportation of products to industries.

It will connect three main transport corridors: the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, the Mombasa-Malindi highway, and the Mombasa-Lunga Lunga highway.

“The Dongo Kundu bypass will be ready by May to connect to the hinterland. Construction of access roads to the port of Mombasa will commence in July,” he said.

Dongo Kundu SEZ will have a power incentive of 10 shillings for peak hours and 7.50 shillings during off-peak akin to the Naivasha SEZ.

KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto said they have received numerous applications from investors willing to set up businesses at the SEZ, even as he invited more investors.

“The government directive is that the zone should be in operation we are slightly behind but we have solved all issues that were impeding progress,” said Capt. Ruto.

President Ruto holds meeting with Kenya Kwanza allied MCAs

President William Ruto Monday met Members of County Assembly allied to the Kenya Kwanza alliance in a stock taking engagement of the government’s performance.

In the meeting held at State House Nairobi and attended by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the caucus reflected on the performance of the government since it was elected to office and deliberated on planned coalition activities.

“We are routinely exchanging views with grassroots leaders so that we can accelerate the accomplishment of our country’s development agenda.” Said  President Ruto during the meeting.

The President urged Kenya Kwanza Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) to understand the political alliance’s manifesto so that they can explain it to Kenyans at the grassroots.

He said the government is implementing a host of programmes aimed at transforming the lives of Kenyans. He cited subsidized fertilizer, universal healthcare, and housing and ICT hubs, among others.

Noting that some farmers have not received subsidized fertilizer because they are unregistered, the President asked MCAs to mobilise them for registration in their wards.

“We will make sure that every region gets adequate fertilizer. Our goal is to increase food production and eradicate hunger,” he said.

The inaugural meeting is expected to shape the political agenda for the party ahead of next month’s UDA grassroots election.

Among those who attended Monday’s meeting included council of governors’ chairperson and Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru, National Assembly majority leader Kimani Ichung’wa and his senate counterpart Aaron Cheruiyot.

Last month, the president held a joint meeting between the executive and members of parliament allied to Kenya Kwanza government where the president lauded the legislators for help push the government’s agenda in parliament.

Today’s meeting came just days after the ten-member National Dialogue Committee led by the Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka handed its report to the President and Azimio leader Raila Odinga. The report was handed over by the 10-member

Two arrested for spiking drink and attempting to rob a reveller in Thika

Police in Thika are holding two middle aged women over claims of attempting to robe a reveller.
According to police, the two are suspected to have stupefied a male clubber at VSpot Nightlife on Friday night.
The mission of the two women is said to have backfired after they were spotted by the club supervisor who was concerned after seeing the two forcefully dragging a seemingly too drunk frequent customer to his car before putting him on the driver’s seat.
The supervisor sought the help of a few colleagues to stop the women who were then fleeing the scene after stealing the man’s ATM cards and other personal documents.
On being alerted about the incident, police officers from Thika station rushed to the scene where they found the unconscious man lying in his car.
According to a police report, more tablets of a yet to identified drug were found on the women.
The suspects were rearrested and booked in cells as the man was escorted to hospital.
The exhibits have since been taken to the government chemist for analysis.

  • Police launch investigations into death of 13-year old pupil

Police launch investigations into death of 13-year old pupil

Police in Nairobi are holding four people including the director of Joy Garden primary school in Umoja over the mysterious death of a pupil at the school.

Police have poked holes on a narrative by the school administration that the death of the pupil, whose body was found lying dead at a balcony in the school on Friday evening, could have been occasioned by a fall.

According to a report booked by the school Director Jane Kimani, the Grade eight pupil at the boarding institution was discovered missing at 6.30pm when she did not show up for supper.

The reportee indicated that a search had then been conducted throughout the school’s eight storey building before stumbling on her lifeless body at a 1st floor balcony outside the Director’s office.

After visiting the scene, Buruburu police who examined the body established that the injuries on the pupil’s body were not consistent with a fall from a higher floor as insinuated by the school management, leading to the arrest of four staff members to assist in the investigations.

Those being questioned by detectives are Jane Kimani, the school’s director, the head teacher  James Mungai as well as the school’s accountant Caroline Matheka  and Anthony Kimani.

The scene has since been processed and the body moved to Mama Lucy Hospital Mortuary awaiting autopsy.

  • Pioneering project a ray of hope for troubled Laikipia-Baringo border

An innovative project is helping bring down criminality along the Laikipia-Baringo common border.

As the country joined the rest of the world in marking International Women’s Day, Olusioni and Lotoyolon Women Self Help Groups, drawn from the Pokot community in Tepelekwi village at the border of Laikipia and Baringo counties, were celebrating the success of their mission to restore peace in an area which has suffered from the adverse effects of banditry.

The women have embarked on bee keeping with the help of Mukutan Conservancy, formerly Laikipia Nature Conservancy, which donated over 1000 beehives alongside offering bee keeping trainings.

The initiative has empowered women to produce and sell honey to already available market which in turn reduces the dependency in pastoralism thus generating income for themselves and their families.

Additionally, the women have the opportunity to expand their skills and potentially employ others in their businesses, thereby contributing to an alternative way of economic growth in their community.

Speaking during celebrations to mark International Women’s Day, held at the beehives plant around the conservancy, Sveva Gallmann, the director of the conservancy said her organization initiated the project following a series of discussion with communities living around the conservancy on ways of giving voice to women in a male dominated society.

According to Sveva, the challenge of deforestation resulting from illegal logging, has been reduced with community members now taking care of forests so as to get high yields and enhance profits with the conservancy offering a ready market.

Rape and robbery suspect nabbed in Kabete

A suspect accused of robbing and raping a woman three weeks ago has been arrested.

39-year-old James Mwangi Wanjahi, who police say was on the run since February 17, 2024, when he committed the alleged offence, was arrested by crime research detectives based at DCI Headquarters.

The suspect was flushed from his hideout within Kabete area and a phone stolen from the victim recovered.

According to a police report, the suspect lured his 40-year-old victim into a business deal only to commit the abominable act.

The victim is said to have reported the matter at Kikopey Police Post in Gilgil indicating that a man, posing as a customer who knew her, had called her to Nairobi CBD to discuss a business deal on some supplies that he needed but turned against her when she boarded his car to go to a convenient place for the discussion.

On boarding the vehicle, the victim say she passed out only to gain her senses hours later to find herself abandoned in the same car at a thicket in Gilgil.

During the incident, she was robbed of 17,000 shillings in cash, stripped half-naked and raped.

The suspect has since been escorted to Gilgil Police Station and placed in custody pending arraignment.

  • I am deliberate in my support for women leaders, President Ruto

I am deliberate in my support for women leaders, President Ruto

President William Ruto Thursday offered behind the scenes insights into his efforts to have women vying under the United Democratic Alliance Party clinch gubernatorial positions.

Speaking in Nairobi during the launch of the strategy for women governors’ caucus, the president would reveal the extent to which he went to ensure their political strategies resonate with the voter.

“I know sometimes, in the process of mentorship, you have to tell them some hard facts,” the president would divulge.

Recalling his pre-election engagement with Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, Ruto said he at one time questioned her political rhetoric, choosing to take her through lessons on best practices in political communication.

“I remember one time I called Susan and told her, listen Susan. I am listening to you and you are not persuasive. I want you to rehearse your text; don’t leave home before you know what you are going to say in a political rally, even if you have to cram three things. I had to take her through lessons, because I really wanted her to succeed.” The president told the gathering.

The president says he advised the Nakuru Governor to leave the city and camp in her home County to ensure that she consolidates her support.

“Another time I called her and told her, I don’t want to see you in Nairobi. You must go and sit at the village. I told her she must put on rubber shoes. Sometimes I know women want to look beautiful, they want to put on skirts. These ones I told them look; this is not the time to look beautiful. Put on a long dress because this place is chaotic. And it was all because we wanted them to succeed.” Said the president.

According to Ruto, majority of political leaders who made the decision to support his presidential bid were women.

He said women are the drivers of change and agents of democratic governance, yet their active participation in politics is limited, restricted and always dotted with obstacles pledging his commitment to change the status quo.

“I made a commitment to the women in Kenya Kwanza that we would finally do something about the two-third gender rule. It has been a back and forth for over ten years. I want to commit that this time round, we will make sure that it is attained.” Pledged the President.
