Lucky escape for Egypt as Salah equalizes in stoppage time

A Mohamed Salah stoppage-time penalty saved the blushes for Egypt as they salvaged a 2-2 draw with Mozambique in their opening Africa Cup of Nations game.

It took the seven-time champions barely two minutes to break the deadlock as a scuffed shot from Salah got its way to Mostafa Mohamed, whose brilliant turn saw him blast a low shot past the hapless dive of the Mozambique goalkeeper, Ernan Alberto.

Mohamed almost doubled Egypt’s lead,as Mo salah thread a ball to his path, but his shot wasn’t enough to hit the back of the night.

Mozambique’s breakthrough would come in the second half, as a Domingos Macandza’s cross found an unmarked João Quembo, whose header; despite being clawed by Egypt goalkeeper El Shenawy spilt into the corner of the net.

Mozambique would increase their lead three minutes later, where Mozambique attacker Clesio glide through Ahmed Hegazi to calmly slot it into the Pharaohs net.

Mozambique’s hopes of a famous triumph were ruined by late drama, as a horrendous foul on Mostafa Mohamed in injury time, saw the referee point to the spot after a VAR check, where Mo Salah converted in off the post.

  • Parliament to commence hearings on affordable Housing Bill this Wednesday

Parliament to commence hearings on affordable Housing Bill this Wednesday

The National Assembly is set to commence public hearings on the Affordable Housing Bill, 2023.

The Bill, whose hearings kicks off this Wednesday seeks to provide a legal framework for the establishment of the Affordable Housing Fund.

“We will seek to give access to affordable housing and to give effect to Article 43(1)(b)of the constitution on the right of accessible and adequate housing ,’’said Majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah .

Despite the High Court declaring the housing levy unconstitutional, Ichung’wah argues court cannot entirely halt the public participation process after a recent court order by a High Court sitting in Kisumu barred planned public hearings on the proposed law following an advertisement published on local dailies on December 9, last year.

According to the advertisement, members of the public and stakeholders had been invited to submit their memoranda on the bill as a written submission as opposed to the current method where lawmakers seek public opinion directly on the Bill.

“The orders did not prohibit Parliament from conducting any other form of public participation including undertaking public hearings across the country on the Bill, or the ordinary stakeholder engagements with key sectors, experts, workers, employers, informal sector, political parties, civil society and marginalized communities etc,” he observed.

The National Assembly through the Departmental Committees on Finance and National Planning and that on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works, has lined up public meetings to collect views from the public on the Bill across nineteen counties, starting Wednesday 17th January for the next two weeks.

Real Madrid thrash Barcelona to lift Spanish super Cup

Vinicius Junior scored a first-half hat- trick as Real Madrid thumped ten-man Barcelona 4-1 to lift Spanish super Cup trophy in Riyadh.

It took seven minutes for the Los Blancos to break the deadlock, with Jude Bellingham; who claimed his first trophy at Madrid, playing a defense- splitting pass to the on-rushing Vinicius Junior, who calmly went round Inaki Pena; the Barca keeper, to slot into an empty net.

With Xavi’s defense looking out of sorts, a ball through the top for Rodrygo caught them napping, with the Brazilian exploiting a high line set by Barcelona unselfishly set-up his compatriot Vinicius who doubled the advantage for Madrid.

Barcelona would pull one back from the mercurial Robert Lewandoski, as his shot from outside the area, flew past a crowd of players including the Real Madrid keeper, AndriyLunin; who came in for the off-form KepaArrizaballaga.

Vini would complete his hat-trick in the 39th minute, as a challenge by Ronald Araujo warranted a penalty, which he coolly dispatched. He becomes the latest player to score a hat-trick against Barcelona since Kylian Mbappe in the Champions League back in 2021.

His involvement in the game would continue, as his cross was tamely cut out by Jules Kounde straight into the path of Rodrygo, who drilled beyond Pena, to see off the game at 4-1.

The day would go from bad to worse, as Araujo would compound Barcelona’s misery with a second yellow which meant the Spaniard got his matching orders.

Barcelona now set their sights on La Liga despite being 7 points behind current leaders Real Madrid.

  • AFCON: Hosts Ivory Coast takes on Guinea-Bissau in competition opener

AFCON: Hosts Ivory Coast takes on Guinea-Bissau in competition opener

2024 African cup of Nations hosts; Ivory Coast have their sights set on a third trophy in their history as they take on Guinea-Bissau in the tournament’s opener in AlassaneOuattara Stadium on Saturday.

The Elephants are widely considered by many as among the team to beat, but the Djurtus of Guinea are looking to progress from the group stages for the first time in their history. Cote D’ivoire will be wary of the fact that host nations from the past have struggled to turn home advantage into success, with only 11 of the previous 33 tournaments being won by the home side.

Ivory Coast previously won the trophy twice, in 1992 and 2015, and they will be hoping to duplicate those winning performances.

Despite being assured a spot in the finals, the team played the qualifiers finishing second, level on points with Zambia on 13 points; winning four of its six games. They have also progressed in 8 out of 9 times out of their respective groups, and they will be looking to make it 9 in this tournament.

Jean- Louis Gasset’s men also drubbed a hapless Sierra Leone 5-1 in their warm up match during the weekend showing a creative edge and a dominant display, a performance they will surely need to replicate to have a chance at a third trophy.

Guinea- Bissau will be aiming to progress from the group for the first time at the fourth time of asking, having being bundled out before the knockout phases. They have also failed to win any of their opening matches at the AFCON.

BaciroCande’s men may have a poor record in the finals of the tournament, but their qualifying campaign will surely give them something positive to think about, as a win over Nigeria’s Super Eagles, is one to give them confidence heading into the campaign.

Guinea- Bissau will also be hoping to improve on their FIFA rankings, as they sit 54 places below Ivory Coast.

Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho rejoins former club on loan

Jadon Sancho has rejoined his former club; Borussia Dortmund on loan for the rest of the season in a move that was completed on Thursday.

German media reports the deal will cost Dortmund roughly 4 million euros, with Sancho agreeing to take a significant pay cut, from the 300,000 pounds he received at United.

His public spat with Manchester United boss, Erik Ten Hag has proven costly as his return marks three years since the Red Devils payed 85 million Euros for the English International.

It all started when the 23 year old took to twitter and claimed the manager deemed him a ‘scapegoat’ after United’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal. He was since forced to train away from the first team and never played a minute for the Red Devils.

Exile came at the worst possible time for the winger, as he never got to replicate the performances that lured him away from Germany with United, scoring 12 goals in 82 appearances, struggling for game-time during Ten Hag and his predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure.

Sancho scored an impressive 50 goals and provided 64 assists in 137 appearances for Borussia, having arrived as a 17 year old, released by Manchester City.
