Kisumu lakeside edge Neonasa to keep promotion hopes alive

Kisumu Lakeside have kept their promotion hopes alive, as they secured a crucial 57-48 win over Neonasa in a hotly-contested Kenya National Basketball league [KNBL] Division one match played at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The Lakers were slow off the blocks, looking out of sorts with Neonasa playing as a cohesive unit, outwitting their opponents 16-7 in the first quarter of the match.

It appeared the Lake-Side team were going to be relegated to back-to-back defeats but would come into the second quarter with spring in their step, with Justus Okutoyi scoring seven points out of the stable’s 12.

Neonasa would score six points in the quarter, seeing them take a slim 22-19 lead at half-time.

The second half started on a high note as the visitors showed their intent of taking the win as they prevailed 16-11, anchored on quick and movement of the ball.

Neosasa Morans were also not taking things lying down as they pushed hard to stay in the game, with Kevin Kimathi ensuring Neosasa remained, dropping seven points of the hosts’ 12.

The fourth quarter saw the game record the highest scoring quarter as both teams displayed their scoring mettle.

However, Kisumu Lakeside wanted the win more, as they made crucial stops taking advantage of the turnovers by Neosasa to take a comfortable lead as the fame slowly came to a close.

The fourth quarter ended 22-15 in favour of Kisumu Lakeside, who went ahead to win 57-48.

Workers union laud Mombasa County government for improving members’ welfare

The Kenya County Government Workers Union (KCGWU) has lauded Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Nassir over reforms implemented by his administration which they say have streamlined salary payments in the County.

Speaking in Mombasa, the union members led by Mombasa branch chairman Abdurahman Mwamagadi said that Mombasa has made significant strides with workers’ strife, which had been a common feature, now a thing of the past.

Mwagadi said Nassir’s administration has also focused on worker’s empowerment through promotion of workers, issue of allowances, training, among other motivational packages.

He noted the county has made strides including prompt payment of workers, implementation of waivers, infrastructure development and maintenance; enhanced public and private partnerships, school feeding programmes in early childhood development centres among others.

“We offer our full support to the governor and his administration as our appreciation for improving worker’s welfare,” he said.

The local authority has been faced with numerous industrial actions since the advent of devolution by the health workers over salary delays, non-remittances of statutory deductions and promotions among other grievances.

The county government of Mombasa secured an advance facility with the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) in a bid to end perennial salary delays to its workers.

The workers’ union has praised the move acknowledging the good work of the governor adding that they have not had an issue with salary payment since Nassir took over.

United climb into the top 6 with victory over the hammers

Manchester United ascended into the Premier League’s top six as goals from Rasmus Hojlund and a double from Alejandro Garnacho secured a 3-0 win over West Ham at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Red Devils were coming off a dramatic 4-3 win over Wolves last week when they had their blushes saved by 18-year-old Kobe Mainoo, with United having to thank two young stars again, as they recorded a more routine victory with three points.

Hojlund’s broke the deadlock for the Red Devils in the 23rd minute, as he marked his 21st birthday in style with a rifled goal that saw him score 4 goals in as many games.

Garnacho then took centre stage as his deflected effort early in the second half doubled United’s lead before, he rounded off the scoring six minutes from time.

Victory, though, came at a cost as Lisandro Martinez hobbled off with a potentially serious knee injury.

The Argentine has only recently returned from a long-term foot injury that has kept him out for most of the season.

Former United boss David Moyes’ long wait for a win at Old Trafford as a visiting manager in the Premier League goes on as defeat sees the Hammers slip behind their opponents in the table, down to seventh.

Ailing Mombasa businessman to appear in court virtually

A Mombasa Court has granted an elderly Kenyan businessman the go-ahead to attend court proceedings from his hospital bed in India after the court allowed him to travel for treatment.

70-year-old Shivjibhai Jadva Parbat Varsani will appear virtually for the mention of his case on Tuesday for the first-time following orders granted by Mombasa senior resident magistrate Gladys Ollimo.

Ollimo, on January 5, allowed Varsani to travel to India for urgent treatment after the accused lawyers, M. Kinyua and King’ang’ia Wachira, successfully made an application.

“The first accused is hereby allowed to travel to India to seek urgent medical attention. He may attend court virtually on the scheduled mention date subject to availability of a virtual platform,” Ollimo said in her court orders.

She had also ordered Varsani or his representatives to tender evidence of his departure from the court’s jurisdiction in the form of a copy of air tickets or boarding pass. This came after the prosecution raised doubt about his excuses for missing court dates.

Varsani had been missing court dates over alleged ill health, a state of affairs that saw six warrants of arrest had issued against him in six separate matters that Varsani’s six companies are involved in.

However, in December, Mombasa chief magistrate Alex Ithuku suspended the arrest warrants after the tabling of the letters from an Indian hospital that proved he had indeed been treated there.

Ithuku had also ordered that Varsani be produced in court on December 18.

His lawyers however produced Varsani on December 15 and sought permission for him to travel subject to them producing the proof of travel.

Varsani is charged alongside Paresh Shivji Parbat and Victor Arara Were with 11 counts of illegally transferring one ordinary share valued at 20 billion shillings to Jadva Parbat between April 14, 2002, and January 31, 2006. The shares are the property of the late Premji Manji Pindolla held in Ghanshyam Builders Limited.

They were also charged with forging the late Pindolla’s signature with the intention of defrauding him.

MISHDP’s goal is to improve the social and economic development of  Malindi and Magarini Sub-Counties in Kilifi in line with the Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA)

Phase two of the project is funded by a concessional loan from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and implemented by the Coast Development Authority (CDA).

Through the project, the 11.5 kilometers Mjanaheri-Ngomeni road will be tarmacked, and a by-pass footbridge constructed at Burangi.

Students from Ngomeni Secondary, Ngomeni Primary, Burangi Primary, Midodoni Primary and Rasi Primary schools will benefit from education facilities. 60 best-performing students will be awarded bursaries at Ngomeni Secondary School.

Cabinet Secretary for EAC and Regional Development Peninah Malonza said during an extensive tour of CDA projects in Mombasa and Kilifi counties said the 50 million shillings ICU facility will ease the suffering of patients from far-flung counties like Tana River and Lamu counties.

“I am interested in this particular project because during COVID-19 where we had quite a number of emergencies and critical cases that came up. We didn’t have an ICU in Kilifi County. People were being referred all the way from Tana River, Lamu and Kilifi to Mombasa,” said CS Malonza.

Phase II of the projects the CS said will cost 950 million shillings. The CS also inspected a dormitory project which is at 60 per cent completion, four classrooms, and a multi-purpose hall at Ngomeni Secondary School.

She stated that the government is committed to ensuring learners have a conducive learning environment in schools and that all children remain in school.

“This project is not to develop Ngomeni Secondary School alone, there are more than five schools that will benefit from this project,” said Malonza.

During the tour, the CS issued 300,000 shillings in bursaries to 21 students of Ngomeni Secondary Schools urging learners to work hard in their studies by showing their education prowess.

PS for Regional Development and ASALs Kello Harsama noted that the government through the CDA is addressing problems associated with many years of marginalization and underdevelopment in Kilifi County.

“We have visited schools, communities and we have seen a lot of development gaps which we are trying to address through CDA,” he said.

On his part, CDA Managing Director Dr Mohamed Keinan said all the project phases are determined by the needs of respective communities.

Excitement as Rallye Monte-Carlo takes centre stage

The 2024 Monte Carlo, also known as the 92 Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo, kicked off on Thursday night amid thrill.

The four-day event, to be held from 25th to 28th January, is taking place in Provence-Alps- Cote d’Azur in France.

The rally marks the ninety-second running of the rally and will be the first round of the 2024 World Rally Championship, 1, 2 and 3 consisting of seventeen special stages covering a total competitive distance of 324.44km.

Elfyn Evans has taken an early lead in the rally, taking advantage of optimal tire strategy and running first on the road to build a 15.1 seconds advantage after only two stages.

Evans was 5.2 seconds faster than everyone else, despite an early scare where he thought he hadn’t used the entire available grip.

The Toyota’s de facto team leader had the optimal tire strategy, running a full set of softs throughout the loop as the other challengers compromised and used at least one super soft tire on each stage.

Pirelli’s super soft compound was on paper the inferior slick tire for the conditions, due to uncharacteristically high temperatures of up to 17 degrees up in the mountains- with zero snow or ice in sight.

Tanak and Neuville were second and third fastest on Throad and Saint- Geniez respectively but dropped back on the second test, Bayons/ Breziers.
